Okay, I have played around a bit and am enjoying my class. I am a human cleric and I choose a warpriest as my....well, I am not really sure.

I have to say that I am a little confused on the way my character is set up.

I am a cleric, but am I the kind that you are all saying is a good starter class? I seem to solo well and can do good damage with my mace, then heal myself or use buffs.

Most of the threads I have read in the cleric forums are not very clear on this, either.

Any help?

Yes, you're a great kind of character for your needs.

The two shortcomings of the Warpriest build path are that the suggested race is human, and that it never takes a level of a warrior class. Taking one level of fighter, paladin, ranger, or barbarian is recommended to teach you to use most kinds of weapons (better than a mace!), and also to give other benefits. At level 3 you'll be learning Khopesh proficiency (the best one-hand weapon), so that will matter less. (Start keeping an eye out for khopeshes now)

In fact, the Warpriest path has an error in that it teaches you Power Attack at level 1, and khopesh at level 3. You should learn PA later, because it's not very useful until you have a higher Base Attack Bonus (in fact, I don't even recommend you turn it on yet).

If you want information beyond this, you should ask more specific questions, and also give a few more details on your situation (what race you are, what items you're using, what spells you like to cast, etc). Also, don't be afraid to ask for advice in-game (even with the LFM panel)

Thanks for the reply. Being on a trial account has made it fairly hard to communicate in game, which is frustrating to say the least.

I am a human cleric on the warpriest of sh-something or other path. I seem to do a lot of melee fighting and heals with a few buffs. I haven't even been in a group yet, it seems like a lot of vets running around that don't have much time for us new players. TBH, some of the annoying WOW-like names I have seen are pretty disheartening as well.

I have not really played the game long enough to be much more specific than that.

The whole "take a level of fighter" thing is a little confusing to me. I can see that you can cross train other archetypes, but I am not quite sure how it is done.

Having a manual would be handy, but I will not get one unless I go buy a copy at a store, and reading it online just isn't the same.

Anyhow, I do greatly appreciate the assistance and so far, the game has me hooked. I think this one got a little unfairly treated when it came out.

Any more Warpriest tips?

It is called multiclassing and is simply done by talking to the fighter trainer (for instance, if you want to splash one level of fighter). Be aware that it will throw you "out of the path", so you won't be able to automatically level in the warpriest pre-set build anymore (but of course you can still manually level up at the cleric trainer).
To get a taste of grouping, try to join groups doing quests you've done before, so you know them already. At low/mid levels many veterans prefer to zerg through quests and it's not much fun when you're new.
Alternatively, set up your own groups saying something like "slow pace, no zerging, new players welcome".
