View Full Version : Greatsword OR Greataxe...KOtC and Bladesworn
Been using greatswords on my WF THF pure pally. Does a good job. Just wondering how many pure THF Pallys are using Greataxes and how much of a difference it is making in DPS. My crit smites are about 420 before counting the numbers behind that. Also, with greatswords I wanted to go for the whole bladesworn enhancements, but it is really expensive in ap's, and only gives +1 to hit with greatswords. Now the second tier of this enhancement looks uber until you read the part about not being able to be healed while in this transformation mode. I was wanting to go bladesworn and Knight of the Chalice, but I don't know if bladesworn is really worth the ap's. Now if it was like +3 or +4 to hit and dmg with greatswords and you could actually be healed during the duration, then maybe. It's hard to get LOH to go off in the middle of big battles, because of some kind of button lag. Anyways, anyone else in the same boat here? I realize that KOtC is gonna require a second tier faith enhancement anyway, so maybe I should just take the one that burns demons since it kinda goes along with the whole KOtC.
So to recap, is Bladesworn really worth it, and would a greataxe be better suited for a WF THF pure pally that is taking the Knight of The Chalice route?

well, here's the thing
bladesworn transformation does give you +4 str bonus that stacks with everything known thus far (profane bonus) as well as +4 to damage with your weapon
the +4 ac bonus is natural bonus so if you have a ranger willing to buff you up, it's neglectable. the last part of the transformation is a +10 to will save, quite handy if you don't have a godly save already as a pally.
downside is you can't cast spell for the 1 min duration and you can't be healed by divine spells during transformation. so no clickies, no divine favor, no heals from clerics and you gotta cast your buffs before you hit that transformation button
is it worth it? up to you really. can you get used to retreating for recovery?

Bladesworn is an awesome boost to DPS, but really, the great sword swings so much slower then a great axe it hinders your DPS, go mauls and great axes it feels like a 20% difference in speed. Yes that much difference. Not to mention when you score a critical with a great axe with exaulted smite, you'll notice the difference in damage immediately
Another thing is that you can't be healed, but you can be repaired, so if you have a warforged friendly caster go ahead and use it often, I typically save it for bosses, or large fights that need to be handled quickly before the bigger baddie around the corner comes along.
It'll be interesting to see what the third tier is for faith enhancements, they're already pretty powerful as it is. And will it cost 12 AP's?

Lay on Hands works while under the Bladesworn Transformation I believe.

It would be if all 2 handed weapons swang at the same speed. Unfortunately falchions swing noticeably slower then the rest. Greatsword is a little faster then a falchion but its still pretty slow compared to a great axe. Maul is little faster then great axe and fastest is Quarter staff but the Base dmg makes it not so great of a 2handed weapon choice.
To the OP greataxe would be your best choice if you have to go THF. If you want true DPS swap to TWF :).

Falchion is painfully slow. So much so that it's just not fun at all for me to use one, for anything.

Agreed, but the 2d4X4, 16-20 on exalted smite 3 means you can lay a serious hurt on some baddies with a good critical effecting weapon.

Has anyone ever tried this with zeal? Wouldn't that speed it up pretty good?
Nevermind, just tried it and Greatsword and Falchion are about the same.
Wow! Just tried a great-axe with zeal and haste and nothing even comes close to its speed. Problem solved and question answered lol.

Wait til you get a critical hit with your great axe. One hit critical smites on ogres and trolls is awesome.
