General question about the smite ability, when I select or click the smite ability from my hot key list does my next SUCCESSFUL hit upon an enemy target gain the benefit of the smite attack?

Or does the smite ability affect my NEXT attack regardless of whether it is successful or not? IE just like in the PnP where you have to announce the use of the smite ability and then roll.

Thanks in advance,

Sometimes your smites miss... BUT... you do gain your charisma bonus to your attack roll, so you don't miss as often.

Most of the time the misses are not from not hitting the target AC, but swinging not intersecting the location of the target due to lag and movement. Smites are best used against somewhat locked down targets (ie never bother with it against a shaman kobold on crack:eek:, you just can't hit them...harder than smiting bats would be.)

When you click on your smite evil ability, it activates a melee attack immediately, as if you had just clicked your mouse button to make an attack. Since this is a melee atack, If your attack roll is a 1 you automatically miss. If you roll above 1 but your attack bonuses (including from smite -see below) are less than the targets AC, you miss. It is used up but has no effect on enemies that are not evil.

So before you click smite you must:
1. Be facing your enemy.
2. Be within melee attacking distance.
3. Make sure your enemy is not moving away from you.
4. Be sure your enemy is evil aligned.

You do not have to have your enemy targetted in your focus orb, but I find this does help if you are in a mob situation. Your smite attack will attack whatever is in front of you.

What happens when you click Smite:

Paladin 1
Smite Evil (1/rest)
Activate this ability to make an immediate melee attack with an attack bonus of + (2 x Cha bonus) and a damage bonus of + [Paladin Level x 3] + 7. This damage is added to your base damage so is multiplied in any critical calculations. Once activated, your smite evil attacks will regenerate at a rate of 1 every 90 seconds up to your normal maximum number of smites.

To sum up,

when selecting SMITE from the toolbar, I had better be within range and ensure the targe creature is EVIL aligned to gain full effect of the SMITE ability.

yes, but I'd map your smite ability to a key, so you can swing swing (press the key for a smite) swing swing, etc.

That way you don't have to stop attacking to drag the pointer to the smite icon on your hotbar.
