View Full Version : Is a splash of cleric worth it for pallys?

Just wanted to know if taking a level of cleric would be worth it for my currently 5th level pally at some point. Want to clarify what the benefits would be.
I know I would loose:
+1 to hit
2 HPs
Lay on Hands HPs
Smiting damage
But would I gain much in terms of SP? How about the ability to use eternal healing wands? Do I have to be at the stated class level to use it ie. Lvl 3 Cleric for Eternal Cure Light or just lvl 3 character level? And how about other cleric specific items? If I couldn't use them...it would make a big difference.
Thnx to all those that reply.

If doing it for SP, don't, there are plenty of items later on to increase your SP.
If doing it so you can use cure wands on yourself, don't. Paladins can use cure serious wands b/c it is a spell they can cast (lvl 4 paladin spell.)
Also, I'd hold off on multiclassing paladin until we hear more about paladin PrC enhancements, as well as holy avenger abilities at lvl 20, as well as capstone enhancements.

There's not much benefit, other then using divine might and other cleric scrolls on yourself, but paladins are so clicky intensive why bother adding another several?
You hurt your number of turns, which are needed for things like divine might as well. If the question were reversed, I could think up a million reasons to splash three levels of paladin on a cleric.

Another option would be to go Wizard instead, this would give you a bonus metamagic feat and access to stoneskin wands :P

If doing it for the SP, then take Sorcerer. CHA and all. Eternal wands shouldn't be the reason to splash. Personally, take a level or two of Fighter. That will be more helpful in the long run. as a Pally with a decent CHA andranks in UMD, you can raise dead off of scrolls, let alone wand usage.

Forgot about that! THere would be clerics who would love that! But at the end ofthe day, no thanks.

Dont ever multiclass unless you have a really good reason, and are happy knowing you are going to lose out of level 20 enhancements, which are going to be a fair bit better than level 19 enhancements. So unless that 1 level of whatever is better than a level 20 enhancement your going to be pretty unhappy once you level up.
A paladin will have plenty of mana later on, especially with any kind of magi or shroud item.

I agree with most here, it doesn't seem worth it to splash cleric though I have seriously thought about it at times. However I splashed one level of rogue on Hyldr simply for UMD. So far she has worked out nicely. She pretty much has to roll a 1 to fail a stoneskin wand, and she has a 60% chance of using a heal scroll, 75% chance for raise dead. (these are unbuffed btw). And she can hold her own in most cases as far as fighting.

I don't recommend splashing Cleric on a Paladin, as it won't give you that much. As was mentioned, you will later find items that give you spell points. The best classes IMO to splash on a Paladin would be Fighter, Monk, and/or Rogue. However be aware of why you are splashing and what it will give you, to know if it's right for you.

IN general the answer would be no. Not a great idea.
As for DV's sure you get some, but only DV1 unless you take a LOT more cleric levels. You also have a lot of other more paladin like uses for your Turns now, like Divine Might. A high Turn # Palading can pretty much keep DM going the entire quest between shrines/rests.

If a paladin wanted to multiclass one level, then rogue, fighter, ranger, monk, sorcerer, or wizard would be better than cleric.
If not for the alignment restriction making it impossible, then bard and barbarian would be better too. Cleric is the worst possible class a paladin could take.
I'll summarize the bonuses of getting 1 level in any other class:
Rogue: UMD, Intimidate, Sneak Attack, Haste Boost
Fighter: Intimidate, Haste Boost, Free Feat, Tower Shield
Monk: Free Feat, Saves, Robed Wisdom AC
Ranger: Favored Enemy, Sprint Boost, Mana, Saves
Sorcerer: Mana, Arcane Wands
Wizard: Mana, Extend Feat, Arcane Wands
Cleric: Mana (and less than a sorc)
Barbarian: Running Speed, Rage, Power Attack, Sprint Boost
Bard: UMD, Saves, Focusing Trance
