Cleansing existing item question?

So can i cleanse a existing item? I have a radiance guard cloak id like to cleanse so that i can hotswap cold and fire bracers for purple damage - can you cleanse a tainted item without removing its properties?

lol you 2 my god - nah when i normally get a essence i build another item and cleanse that one so my original item has never been cleansed on any of my toons... sooo i was asking if the old one can be cleansed...and yeah i normally take the tomes:D
