View Full Version : 5 different servers, why?

From my playing of 3 days now, it seems multiple servers are not necessary. It's just like Guild Wars, everything outside of town is instanced. All you're doing here is thinning out a population that's already pretty thin. (I would assume as I haven't seen that many people on Khyber, especially on a weekend (which should generally be the most populated time), and other reasons for that matter, but nonetheless...) I just find no reason for 5 servers, let alone multiple servers for this game. But like I said, I have only been playing 3 days (the game has improved greatly from launch. It was terrible then, actually enjoyable now... looks like they released the game 2 years early :P ) so I may not know what I am talking about... o.0

if you think 5 is rough... back in the day there was 12 (I think it was 12, might have been a little more)...
The reason there hasn't been a merge again is I there is a lot of people actually out there, just most are set anon and/or guild runs only sorts... As the anniversary events showed there are always more lurking or login/log out types who tend to bloat server numbers a little.

OP, i cannot disagree with you
however, i will say that certain areas in the game can still get crowded at certain times which creates lag & that some people really enjoy their character's names and a merge would cause some problems with that
but, i think eventually there will be just one to three servers

Instancing does not solve all the problems. Each world would have several commonalities that could create bottlenecks and therefore lag issues. For example, just because you got your own instance doesn't mean you have your own physical server. Dealing with 1000 instances on one server cluster will create more load than dealing with 200. There is also a database back end, and once again, 1000 simaltaneous users creates a tougher load to deal with then 200. Same goes for network switches and other backbone hardware.
They already did one merger. I'm sure they looked at that time if it made sense technically to move to 8, 5, 3, or 1 worlds.

I noticed a slight slowdown since the mod, presumably due to more guild-centric runs and a lot of lowbies being made for the NPE.
...but I still rarely wait more than five minutes to find something to do.

If you can't find a group, start one. It'll fill.
Same as how it always is.

in my guild, many have returned due to holidays etc. people come people go but to use the number of people in the who panel or lfm is erroneous. many people are going annon to run stuff in guild. i have recently started shroud runs with 8 people in party w/o even listing lfm. skelly runs usually have the same people running them repeatly
i dunno why you said it but khyber imo has a healthy pop. maybe its your game time. during my hrs (aussie peak time), i never have to wait long to fill a raid. sometimes, the factor can also be ability based.....

Then come join me in Korthos Village were I spent 2hrs total (two seperate 1hr attempts) looking for at least one other person to do some Korthos Island questing. (I wanted to try some elite-mode quests, which should be easy for two people) This was two seperate times, in the evening; talk about frustrating. And I dont want to move on to Stormreach just yet, I just want to finish these quests and get it over with. ><

Thelanis.
'nuff said. :)Actually, I'm not so sure.
Are you implying that Thelanis citizens spend their time hanging out on Korthos Island?
:D:D

I don't understand why ANY game these days has characters locked to specific servers. It makes so much more sense to allow somneone to log into any server they want up to capacity. That way the lag-ridden go to the lowest pop ones, and the ones looking for group can go to the busy ones. Anyone who ever truthfully left due to poor server population would likely still be here. I'd even imagine a "LFG" server where people gather, then all transfer to a low pop lag-free server for a quest (assuming it was an easy thing to hop servers).
This also allows the easy pruning or adding of servers at any time, though in this game they would have had to make the character unique name a combination of first and last name, otherwise there would have been no legible ones left about 3 hours after launch hehe.
