Okay, here's a chance to voice your opinion over what you feel is the most important player trait.

Only list ONE. I know that there are a multitude that make a great player, but in your eyes what's the one thing that separates "a good" player from a "great" player?

Obviously, I'll go first.

* Able to succeed outside of the formula. We spend countless hours trying to find the most efficient way to complete a quest. Then we develop a formula. This is especially true of raids. However, in my opinion the best players are the ones that can still succeed at that quest outside of the formula.

For example. Said quest needs 2 clerics, 2 melee, a bard, and a caster. However, can you still complete quest if one tank is swapped out for a rogue, etc?

Also, when the formula breaks down, can you recuperate without going into a tailspin of frustration and anger? Can you recuperate at all?

I'll sum up the above in one word - "Flexibility"

I'm not on your server, but I have a good term that I regard as imperative in a good group member:

Attentive.

Patience -- Ability to keep your cool when things are going poorly. So, not yelling at people who make mistakes or are newer, not getting angry when the going get tough. It is a GAME afterall, and alot of people could behave a little more sportsmanlike.

I probably should have posted this in "General", but I didn't want it to get out of hand. General is a quick place to end up in flame wars.

Self-sufficiency. You shouldn't need (e.g.) a cleric for every run you do. I had great fun on Risia for a few weeks when they first introduced monks to the server running six-man monk parties just because there weren't any clerics, and I think we all learnt to be more self-sufficient. If you have an LFM up for a cleric for more than a few minutes - just run with what you have - everyone in the group will learn more as a result.

I have to agree that a sense of humor is probably the most important thing to have. If you can't laugh about a character death, even your own, then you are taking the game too seriously. Bonus points if you cause your own death purely for laughter.

Yep, if you're gonna die, do it heroically. I prefer the running around screaming, till there's nothing left but to go fetal and just die method.

I like the answers so far.

*Eagerness to have fun* I think some of the best quest runs ive been on have been with people actually looking forward to the run. Even if weve done the quest hundreds of times its always nice to see a group that looks forward to doing it then people who are bleh about things.

If there were other players anywhere close to as good as me I would be able to answer this question......(j/k of course)

I would have to say, the ability to be humble or modest......I.E.-not always having to have the answer.....

Personality

You can best the most uber player of a game ever, but if you are immature or selfish or have any seriously a----holish personality you will never be a great player of an MMO. You will be an cunning player that few people like, being an MMO that we play social interaction is a huge and I mean HUGE part of the gaming experience, and having a poor interpersonal intelligence means you will never fully reach your potential as a player will not happen. People like this tend to be bad leaders, have little ability to teach others and their social world in the game is much smaller then others. I saw this a lot in UO more so then in DDO, I think DDO has a much more mature and personable community then UO ever did. A great player should be generous, helpful, respectful, mature, and humorous all a part of a good personality and have just as much ability and skill as the 50+ hour a week powergamer, a real life version of this guy:

I have noticed a severe lack of this ability on Mt. Reysalon. The lava cliffs are a prime location for a "lava dive".

Just imagine my disappointment after killing all those gnolls, and fire elementals to get to the top of the falls, only to find Turbine has set up a gate.

I have to say the one thing that makes a great player is the ability to keep on going.
I dont mean not dying, I mean when the party has wiped five times you dont DC and switch to another toon. I mean when the sorc has ooze puppet and summon monster I loaded and has no idea what the hell he's doing, you offer advice and keep on going.

Ive watch a lot of so called great players drop group because 'c'mon guys, this quest is easy, what a bunch of noobs'.

If someone has the ability to roll with what you have and show some patience, thats a great player.

Double bonus for causing other party members to die 'just for laughter'. Grease FTW.

(no, that was NOT a serious response - mine would be self-sufficiency)

Calm.

No not calmly explaining to noobs, not crawling through dungeons so the RPer can comment on the architecture he once read about. Don't Panic! I find that if you can keep your head in a situation and quickly analyze where you are even a single player ill-equipped can rescue the party. Panicing and diving into the fray ordragging everything away from the tanks is perhaps the worst thing a player can do, while staying calm grabbing stones and using the environment is truly the mark of a great player.

I have to agree that the ability to have fun and enjoy the people you are with no matter what the situation is what I value the most. Lets face it if you can do this you are not going to be complaining about content the second you finish new stuff on elite because your enjoyment will only partially hinge on that. Heck I have done Waterworks more times than I can even begin to remember, but I guarantee that I have fun doing it even now... lol.:p I have also been in tears laughing sometimes when things go horribly wrong... doesn't mean I don't take things seriously or that I never get frustrated but at the end of the day aren't we all here for a bit of fun and relaxation?;)

Self-Sufficient --These players also tend to be innovative and creative in getting out of messes:)

I think adaptibility. If something goes wrong, it's good to have players around that can still function and get through the quest.

Caltin - 16 fighter, Burninghair - 16 sorc, Begleiter - 15 cleric/1sorc, Knaak 15 rouge, Occuda 10 fighter 3 pally.

Enabling push-to-talk (voice activated punks, I don't want to hear you chew, cough, gag, hack, snort, kids and wife screaming, dog barking, or whatever else is going on in your little corner of world).

Aside from that, I'll go with attentiveness. This means noticing if you (or someone else, or your party) is in deep 5#!+, knowing what you can do about it, and doing it. This also means being a good listener.

i tend to watch how a player dies to judge how good/bad/uber of a player they are. i couldn't cout how many times i've watched people just fight until they die, as if their magical pocket cleric is going to give them a full heal any second. attentiveness, self sufficeiency, it's all part of not being a n00b.

Humor and humility.. to me those are the cornerstones upon which great players are built.

Humor, because well ... sometimes it's just better to laugh than to have an embolism.

Humility...because nobody really cares if you THINK you're the leetsauce, ubershiznit. and run your suck the whole quest/raid trying to prove it. It's how people speak your name when you're NOT around that really matters.

I've always felt that rep > all in online gaming.. and a great way to earn a positive rep is through humor and humility.

Wow.. You are right there is so much that would make a great uber trait, Gear, player abilty stats , all of it play style

But I think the most important thing is really humor, haveing fun in the game, and laughing is the best thing. It really out weighs everything else imo

A good player trait is understanding that just because you are a chief doesn't mean you can't be an indian.

Having the ability to work within a system of play different from your own and be productive within that system in obtaining the goal.

3 types of players, 3 best traits:

The leader - Never assume someone they have never ran a quest with knows what they expects. - people cannot read you mind

The group - Listening skills - Even if you suck, if you follow the leaders advise, you can still complete most quests

The Zerger- Knowledge of the quest. - If you wanna race me to the end, cool, just dont slow me down when I gotta go raise your ass!

I think good players realize that loot, xp, and content are all artificial and that the only real thing in this game are the people you are playing with. With that realization i think people will be willing to listen to others' ideas, suggestions, and instructions; offer their own when they can; and play their role in the group and be part of a team.

P.S. I like the idea of push to talk too though... i don't need to hear ya breathe to be reminded your alive...
