View Full Version : Best Great Axe for a THF Barbarian

I just started a new lowbie for the Mod 8 content two nights ago. He's a Savage of the Wild build, a Human and more fun to play than I've had in a while. Don't get me wrong, I love my main Rogue Nalinor, but it is just refreshing to wade in and kill stuff like a buzzsaw.

Anyway, I have two lowbie Great Axes already: Great Axe of Embers and a Great Axe of Lesser Montrous Humanoid Bane or some such name.

What are some of the best Great Axes to look for in DDO?

Thanks in advance.

Maelstrom is nice too out of Temest Spine....but hard to come by. If you can find any Keen ones in AH those would help ya out till you get Carnifex.

use the axe with the highest + number u can find, typically on a two hander that will matter more than elemental damage. exception being things with specific DR, a holy maul is better than a +4 greataxe in deleras b/c of the black skeles

once you hit lvl 6 or so its a good idea to pick up Power attack, which will increase your damage far more than the elemental damage on a weapon, which makes every + to hit very important to squeeze out

few exceptions like the carniflex mentioned do appear, but even so I enjoyed using a +5 greataxe over the carniflex simply because of the to hit issues with PA (especially if using the barb or wf PA enhancements)

Personally, I treated Great Axes like you would treat golf clubs. Carry about 5-6 and switch between whatever works for you given the situation. Carry some that are great on undead (Flaming, Holyburst, Ghost Touch), carry some for pure damage (+4 or +5, Keen) and then try to get you hands on a few specialty weapons (Elemental banes or True Law). Also, carry a "junk" axe that you can switch to when you fight slimes .. you will get far better damage than what you would get from a maul .. and the repair bill will be cheap.

I wouldn't focus too much on getting a Carnifax. I went through Deleras 6 times and never got it. Delera's gives so much experience points .. by the time I did all that .. I was already level 9 and missed a ton of level appropriate content.

You really need to watch the AH. I had horrible luck getting decent axes as end rewards. All of my better axes I had to buy from others.

Carnifex first then Mineral II for your dps sticks. Power 5's are good too in their context of course.

Too bad you were not on Sarlona. I have a few leftover "twink" greataxes from my WF Barbarian. I had intended to roll another, but my 44 pt WF wizzy/rogue keeps me having entirely too much fun right now. You can always look for some RR gear in the House D vendor. Surprisingly good lowbie stuff has been in there lately

I'd cruise the AH for a Maelstrom on the cheap. Otherwise, just go with whatever until Carnifex (sp?) out of Delara's.

Thanks everyone!

Carnifax, huh? Sounds good.

I saw a Bone Breaking Great Club on the AH a while back. What do people think of that addition to a weapon, the Bone Breaking part, I mean. Is that worth the bother to look for?

A suggestion to anyone who wants Carni, but does not want to out level it's use:

You can avoid getting xp in the quests by enter/exit/enter/exit/enter/exit.. until your reentry penalty wipes out the xp. Do that at the start of each run through each part.

I've had some good success with a +1 Keen of Maiming Great Axe, ML 4.

Bone breaking is a Dex stat drain on crit. On a Great Club it is not very useful. Dex Stat drain in general is not nearly as useful as one might think.

My opinion is that if you are using THF, you are going DPS and not stat damage or debuffs.

Transmuting, Keen, or even Vicious. JMHO
