Need some help here. I'm creating a min2 weapon for my Ranger who has Improved crit for slashing weapons and +2 ATT/DAM with Longsword & Rapier. My question is, am I better off going with a Scimitar Min2 because of the crit range, or going Longsword because of the elven bonus enhancement. I realize that with the Min2 spec, my Improved Crit is nullified for both weapons because of the keen bonus. Please advise. thanks

Go rapier and get the best of both worlds: Better crit range, and elven damage bonus.

I agree with Solmage, swap your Imp Crit:Slash for Imp Crit:Pierce, and go Rapier.

Back to the original question.

Do you need the bonus to hit and damage? The big damage numbers and most burst effects rely on getting and confirming critical hits. You give up 4 points of base damage for a much higher crit range (50% larger).

Run the numbers. In those cases where it takes a 16+ to hit the longsword will be better -- you are only getting a hit on what would be a crit in any case, better to get the bonus to hit and damage, you'll still hit on 14+ due to the to hit bonus (when 14 & 15 normally would miss). For everything else the advantage is probably with the scimitar.

You're forgetting one of the great bonuses of mineral II - keen! You can make a rapier, keep the high crit range, benefit from your racial enhancements, and never need improved critical. Best of both worlds. That lets you still utilize the slashing feat if you already have a collection of them you like to use.

Exactly what I was going to suggest.

Don't worry about the lower base damage on a Rapier (compared to the Longsword) - the crit range makes much more difference.

Plus, the greensteel rapier will have the same damage die as the longsword, a 1d8, so you really won't be losing out on anything.

False; Greensteel Longsword Is 1d10 Base Damage... But Again, The Rapiers Crit Range More Than Makes Up For It.

I went scimitars on my str-build ranger.

I don't have any problem spending the extra AP's, and the scimitars are sweet.
