How to get a tome?

I know this has to have been asked before (I couldn't find it with search), but how do I get a tome, especially at the lower levels? Are they drops or chest loot? Do you craft them? I've seen lots of build advice about using tomes at a low level and I just assume it's loot that a higher level alt supplied. But how high level will I be before I start to see them? Thanks!

they drop in chests as well as rewards not crafted. to get +2 tomes u need a min L17 quest, +1s can be found in L9 chests

alternatively you can purchase them from the AH. beware they can be expensive for new players

I've seen one (+1) tome drop in Stormcleave, and one in Xorian Cipher, so they can drop in level 8 quests (Xorian may have been on Hard, but SC was not). It is extremely rare, though. You're not likely to see tomes dropping on anything like a regular basis before you start doing level 12+ quests (Gianthold and beyond). If you really want them at lower levels, best bet is to make a lot of money and buy them. Alternatively, just level up a character to the cap without worrying much about gear/tomes/etc., and use that character for loot runs for all your alts.

You get 1 +2 Tome for 1750 favor. +2 Tomes still are pretty rare so if you're needing a specific one this is very viable if you don't have lots of plat to spend on them. After you get to level 16, purchasing +1 Tomes from the AH is well within your means.

yeah really what you see are people who have a high elvel character with egar and funding that plan to use tomes (easy to come by at lvl16) on their new characters

an actual new character will have a hard time getting one for a while

You'll get most of them as end rewards for medium to high level quests. They're almost always the best option to pick on your end reward list when they appear.

If you are after +1 tomes, I'd advise doing the following: Grab every collectible you see, then when you get lucky and find Silver Flame Hymnals or Lightning-Split Soarwoods, trade them for +1 tomes. (Two of the former should get you a +1 tome; one of the latter should get you two +1 tomes - in both cases, any stat except Intelligence, which is valued higher).


Expect to start looting +1 tomes yourself about when you hit level 12 (they'll still be rare) and +2 tomes when you hit cap.
