Hey guys,
My friend is interested in playing DDO, so I decided to reroll a character to play with them, and wanted a high hp/ac tank type class for them so they don't have to worry as much about dying until they learn the mechanics a little better.
Was thinking Pally or Fighter, possibly multi-class. I will be able to give them some items, but nothing super-twinked, so a build that can survive without any would be nice. Let me know if you have any ideas.
Check out the pure classes in Aranticus' thread. I was thinking of either the warrior/pally there, but was wondering if a slight hybrid would be a little better since I do have experience with the game and can help them out with some loot/strategy.

Dwarf paladin would be a good place to start (heavy armor proficiency, paladin aura, dwarven CON bonus). Warforged would be another option - their immunities are handy for newer players who haven't got the gear yet to make them redundant (proof against poison item, disease immunity item, etc.). They also have the advantage of getting full effect from the Lay on Hands ability (the -50% divine healing penalty for warforged doesn't apply to LOH).
If you want the character to continue to be viable as a high AC type at high levels, might want to consider some fighter levels (or a fighter with some paladin levels), and enough INT to eventually pick up Combat Expertise (min 13 after tomes and before items).

Best simple choice would be dwarf paladin 2 / fighter 14. Stats would look like
str 15
dex 13
con 16
int 12
wis 8
cha 11
Start fighter and make sure you max out intimidate. Get tower shields + full plate and look into the armor / shield mastery enhancements. Pick the toughness feat and associated enhancements. Put level up points into Str.
Once you get your hands on a +1 Int tome (if you can't buy one yet), get Combat Expertise as a feat.
Note that a 32 pt build would be better for such a character, as you could go str 16 / dex 14 / cha 12.

I agree that this is a great build for a newbie 28 pointer, dwarven ax proficiency to boot :D .... however, I might consider going pally 3/fighter 11 (four reasons: fear immunity, disease immunity, extra LOH and extra enhancements to aura at the cost of only one feat) but other than that this is a great build.

Yes, the pally 3 is also a valid alternative. Really depends on whether you want that extra feat or not.
