View Full Version : Ideas for a new build

My first character was a rogue. I like rogues, I have two and need a new one!

My first is capped and semi-retired until the level cap raises. She is a rogue 14/ranger 2. She is a typical dex build, good trap monkey, but can also hold her own in a fight as long as she doesn't get too much agro. I also built a Vulkoor Assassin that is currently at level 9 - 3 Pal/6 Rog. She is a lot of fun too, but I am getting the mid-range blues so I need a new rogue build.

I would like to do something strength based for a change, but also want to be a real rogue - I don't mind splashing a few levels of something else, but don't want to be something else with a splash of rogue. She can be Drow or a 32 pt human or halfling, (no dwarves or WF please.)

I like dual wielding, I have built up quite a collection of dwarven axes and bastard swords and have no one to use them, but it is not a necessity. It would also be nice to be able to wand heal without needing to get my UMD high enough, but again, not a total necessity. I have a few +1 tomes, but no +2s and not enough plat to buy any.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The roughest part of a str build, if you don't multiclass a lot or go dwarf, is the HP. With str comes more aggro and you do not want to get squashed. Maybe try the following (based around pure rogue but splash whatever your preference is, pali most common for saves, without a big deal):

Human:
16 (+ all level up points)
8
16
16 (with insightful reflexes)
9
9

Other than improved crit, I highly recommend putting ALL other feats into toughness. Between your sneak attacks and your strength, you will be a killing machine with no further investment there. It's the survivability factor that is a worry. It sounds like you are used to rogues though so that will definitely help you out with the aggro management. In the desperate hope of them giving me more character slots I plan on making a build somewhat similar to this.

I never understood the logic behind this sort of thing...

Especially since this build won't be able to TWF, so your DPS will actually be lower than a dex rogue with all the TWF feats.

How about something along these lines:
Halfling 13rog/2rgr/1mnk
14
18
12
12
12
8

Final stats (unbuffed):
28
32
20
20
20
8-14

Feats:
TWF (Granted)
ITWF
GTWF
PA
CE
IC: Slash
Exotic Weapon Prof: Khopesh
FE: Evil Outsider
Toughness
Crippling Strike
Improved Evasion

HP:
80 Con
78 Rogue
16 Ranger
30 GFL
8 Monk
5 Way of the Patient Tortoise I
10 Draconic Vitality
20 Heroic Durability
18 Toughness
18 Minos Legens
25 Tier 2 Shroud
308 HP

AC (self-buffed):
10 Base
6 Armor
2 Chaosgarde
11 Dex
5 Wis
1 Dodge Ritual
5 Protection
3 Barkskin
1 Haste
4 Shield
1 FE
1 Halfling
5 CE
55

With Top-End Loot:
3 Chat Ring
4 Raiment
4 Shroud Insight
66

Raid-Buffed:
2 Barkskin
2 Recitation
5 Paladin Aura
4 Inspire Heroics
79

Saves:
F/R/W
9/13/6 Base
5/11/5 Ability Mod
4/4/4 GH
4/4/4 Resistance Item
0/1/0 Haste
1/1/1 Halfling Luck
23/34/20

With potential for 3 more from Resist 5 item and Head of Good Fortune, as well as halfling enhancements if you find you want a save a bit higher.

Plenty of damage from 28 unbuffed strength, 3 FE damage, GTWF, 7d6+13 rogue sneak attack, 8 halfling sneak attack, and plenty of survivability with excellent saves, AC, and decent HP (with 79 potential AC, 300ish hp is easily plenty).

If I were to make another rogue, this would probably be it.

Thank you both for the suggestions!

Why ranger instead of fighter or paladin?

Why ranger instead of fighter or paladin?

Free TWF (1 feat behind fighter, 1 ahead of pally), and most importantly, 3 FE damage (equivalent of +6 strength).

Saves are high enough without pally, no sense in weakening my other stats for a few more points in charisma. Fighter simply doesn't give you anything over ranger... I'd take free use of wands and 3 damage per swing any day over 4 hp and 1 feat.

Diehard is lvl 3 ranger, however, so unless you're waiting for level cap to go up (or taking it in place of something else), you don't get that benefit. Regardless, I'd take ranger over fighter for the build you proposed as well, Kadish.

D'oh. Fixed.
