I do understand that some quests are just plain not enjoyable without a decent party makeup. But I wanted to share an experience from last night that made me realize yet again how fun this game can be when you go outside those typical parties.
Leveling some lowbie characters with a couple guildies, and decide we will do Tear of Dakhaan. thew up a LFM, and took the first 3 hits. Here was the party makeup:
Dwarf L6 Wizard
Elf L4 Sorc
WF L5 Wiz/L1 Rogue
Human L4 Bard/L1 Fighter
Elf L4 Ranger / L1 Monk
Halfling L4 Bard
This may not have been the easiest Tear run I have ever been on, but it was definitely the most enjoyable. We had plenty of pink-hatted friends following us through the quest, lots of fascinates and mez'ing, and two nonstandard tanks that excelled. We did gwylands afterwards with the same result.
Just a reminder, especially on those low level quests, don't be afraid to have a less than ideal party makeup, you may just wind up remembering what you enjoy so much about this game.

in some quests a pink hat >> a kill
gratz on the success. sounds like blast.

I ALWAYS take the first five...
And I pretty much always have a lot of fun (maybe 5-10% turn into terrible party wipes)
Way too many people think they need a perfect party to do quests... What's weird is that most of them consider themselves "elite" but want their quests to be super fast and super predictable...
That's not a definition of elite, in my book... Being able to complete any quest with any party is a much more uber accomplishment I think

Totally agree. Contrast this with the typical group going through the same quest...2 casters, 3 melee, 1 cleric, all lvls 6 to 8. The result? Certainly goes quickly and easily, but the fun factor takes a nose dive. And sometimes, due to the zerging going on with the higher levels and dependence on the cleric, you can actually sometimes see these pugs get into more trouble than the lower level, non-standard group as the focus on tactics is much higher with the latter.
I'm a huge fan of the lower level, non-standard group doing quests on normal at the highest level they can achieve. I think that's when I've had my most fun questing.
The downside is that it can get somewhat expensive in terms of consumables and time vs loot reward...

I'm guilty of this - but oftimes its just a timing issue. I don't have nearly the time to play as I do visit these forums with my current schedule. Sometimes I need to know I can do my shroud run in under an hour, or my devils E run in 15 mins, etc.
Now, I do agree that the non-standard can very much be the most fun. When I had more friends that played this game, we would frequently just play whoever we wanted and figure it out from there. And it certainly can make you think of some interesting strategies. So, yes its great, just not always an option.

for quests, same here
for raids, completion is more important. having 4 spellsingers in a shroud party doesnt really really cut it
ps: DNPs are not included in the 1st 5 :D
