Do banishing bastard swords exist? I've hunted high and low, and watch the auction house religiously... it seems they don't exist(?) Can someone verify that statement?

no, to my knowledge there are no such things as slashing banishers. Ranged, Piercing, Throwing and blunt....unless someone wants to correct me.

This would explain why I don't see them. What's the ruling reason there is no slashing banishers? Does anyone know from PnP ruleset? I'm curious.

The wound generated by a slashing weapon cannot sent the magical force of banishment directly to the outsider's soul/spirit. Only bashing or piercing weapons when crit. can sent the magical energy of banishment to the core of the outsider thus severing their ties to the Primary Plane.

Slashers get vorpals, Blunts and piercings get banishers.

Only logic I can figure.

cuz piercing was deemed to be teh uber in DDO.
bludgeoning banishers don't count, as they cannot overcome their natural inability to crit.

edit: as lymnus mentions, the time banishers started coming around vorpal came too, and the majority of melees used slashing weapons.

Even though piercing weapon animation attacks have a slashing look...
I'm real surprised they didn't just give monks the standard slashing attack look but without weapons. ;)

It's an artifact of AD&D (maybe even Basic/Expert rules...I don't remember) where clerics were seen as the prime "banishers of evil" type and clerics could only use blunt weapons.

I think later it might also have been kept in to create a balance effect... slashing had vorpal, bludgeon had banishing, piecing had um... ya nothing, but pokie sticks always seemed good for rogues anyway in a roll play situation :D
