View Full Version : Monk\Ranger Tempest of Air Build (constructive comments welcome!)

Hey all!

I want some constructive advice on this build i thought of. I started to build it on Sarlona with the name Yuritomo (a reference to Yoritomo from L5R, if your familar) and any advice on any aspect is welcome! This build is centered around atacking very fast and flavor. With the +15% (i think) attack speed that Ranger Tempest 1 gives and the +15 attack speed that Adept of Wind stance gives you, this is will mean pretty good DPS. It wields dual +5 greensteel kamas with Acid\Good\ Acid&Good for DPS and dual vorpal kamas for crowd control. Power Attack means more damage for somethings and Combat expertise for bigger things. Also with cleave, great cleave, and whirlwind attack, I have some mass damage things. Thanks!

You won't be able to use shield clickie and combat expertise efficiently. Shield clickie lasts 60secs, and it takes CE 20sec to refresh.

2 button presses of time that you're down 9 ac. Works on my toons.

I did a similiar build but went 12 int with a tome to get CE. 14 starting con as well... though your initial build stats aren't completely clear... maybe that's reflecting wind stance. I also pushed the Diplo skill to help when you get a number of mobs around you.

I also notice you don't have improved crit... I'll probably start with IC: slash for the kamas... and then once I get a mineral 2 kama... I'll probably go with IC: Ranged for manyshot situations...like the pit fiend.

You can do that but people are too lazy and would rather complain that CE is "broken" blah blah. Also youd only be down 5 AC for a split second. CE is on, you hit shield clicky which turns off CE but simultaneously gives you your +4 shield, turn CE back on immediately, there is no cooldown of CE immediately after casting, only if you manually turn it off. Its as easy as hotkeying 2 buttons but some folks cant handle it.

I like the build for the AC but where is the damage coming from? It doesnt even really matter that you dont have improved crit I guess because the crit mult and range of kamas is pretty weak anyway. Semi good dps vs your 2 favored enemies...

hmm since when has vorpals been considered crowd control.... oh wait thats right only toons who can't deal enough dmg fast enough have to use them adn consider them good.... yah they ain't crowd control might wanna find a new thing to classify them as here is a hint "i can't do dmg"

I don't think the non-red orthons in shroud and up are worth DPS'ing. Even when they're held or stoned, it's still 10 swings for their > 1.5k hp. Dual stat damage or dual vorpal are usually faster. Though for a monk with the limited crit range on kamas and no puncturing... you'd better be good rolling 20's.

So to answer your question: "since the shroud".

Wait.. Tempest doesnt work with unarmed, and if your TWF with rapiers or any real weapon you lose most of your monk benefits

so you plan on using 2 kamas? Sure your AC is nice, but your gunna hit like a wet piece of newspaper.

You hit like a angry gnat, and you got zero intim so really, that AC isnt gunna be as effective and useful as you would want.


And im sure someone is gunna make the "but he can use vorpals well" defence, which really quite pointless of an arguement, considering most things your gunna want a real tank for is immune to vorps

mm lol u must not do good dps then cuz i know it doesn't take the groups i am running in long to kill the non-red orthons in the shroud and up and about .000000000000005% comes from the one tard who thinks vorpals are the only way to go

Sure he wont do Barbarian DPS, but who the hell (other than barbs) can?

I've got a finesse kama ranger/monk started with 8 str. If you consider that I get 11 attacks to the 2hander's 5, I am not that far behind them (especially with the +8 damage of a backstabbing goggle/weapon). Add favored enemy and I can grab aggro once in a while.

Now consider the healing the 75AC character needs, vs the 6 AC barbarian :D

Oh of course you dont want all your tanks to be on the low end of DPS, but this kind of character works quite well with a barbarian partner.

No... I do well... except the stuipd Abbot asteroid puzzle. Thanks for your concern. Please make at least a barbo 14 before telling others that they are low damage.

As to his monk with a high AC... the cleave, gcleave and whirlwind will help establish a lot of initial aggro in groups of mobs while the rest of the party takes out their targets. He won't be able to grab aggro back from anyone, but to start off a group of mobs with a weakening/wounding/cursespewing of destruction kama hits applied to 5 or 6 enemies... will be nice. A weighted 5% hand wraps or qstaff might also be interesting with 3 mass arc attacks.

The kamas are aready keen. Acid\Good on the 3rd tier shroud crafting gives you keen, transmuting and slicig

To clarify....this plans to be a dual kama wielder..both of which are shroud crafting using Acid for the first tier, good for the second, and dual acid\good for the third.....here is the breakdown

per weapon hit without power attack

1d6+5(str)+5(weapon enh.)+1d6 (pure Good burst)+1d6(acid)= Avg. of 20.5 per atack

On a crit, both the base damage and the good burst damage goes up a little..also the weapons have keen, transmuting, and slicing which can be nice. its not a lot of damage, but considering I will be hitting almost twice as fast as anyone else, i think it will be a good for getting initial aggfro and blocking baddies from the rest of the party.....plus it really has some fun favor....thanks for the great comments and plz keep anyomre comming

:) I found this topic while searching though old posts. This is for anyone who wants to build something similar and is doing searching in the forums for this: I built this on Sarlona (Character: Yuritomo) and he has stood the test of time and even with changes to how Tempest and Air stance work, is still one of the most effective builds out there, and I stumbled upon it before it became popular! This build is not the highest DPS out there, but is probably in the top 10, and its survivability is high. It is not uncommon to see this build or its counterpart (12 Tempest\6 Monk\3 whatever) in raids all of the time. Also it looks like Update 5 will make it even better by tempest and air stance working better together.
