I was screwing around with using a buckler on my lowbie rogue (who isn't profficient) and I could not see any penalty for using a shield. Am I missing something? What is the penalty for using a shield without Shield Profficiency?

If I remember correctly you can use a shield that doesnt have a skill check penalty if you don't have profiency and not suffer the penalties. Mithral bucklers fall under that and possibly masterwork and normal bucklers as a trade off for lower shield AC bonus.

Ahhh, it is a mithral buckler so that would explain it. There was no skill check penalty listed. Thanks.

you can use up to a heavy mithral shield with no penalties, the icon will show but you will have no ill effects.
