View Full Version : offensive spams

I have started to recieve offensive, swear ridden spams from a player who creates a character with a random name, sends me the exact same offensive spam, then quickly logs out deletes the character and repeats. I squelch each name and report the tell as harassment, but seeing as it has happened to me the last 4 days in a row.. Turbine doesn't seem to be able to do anything about it.
To whatever player is doing this, congrats.. it is working, this is just the type of thing that is making me lose intrest in the game.
To Turbine... why doesn't the squelch command, squelch the player's account instead of just squelching the character's name who that player uses to harass another player? I'm sure this kind of harassment is fairly wide spread in the game.

Just started receiving them tonight. 3 in one shroud run. I agree squelch should squelch the account.

I haven't gotten anything like that, but it just plain makes sense - if you're squelching someone, it's not because they're playing a character you don't like (even role players will always tone down their character if the character is offending you, the player). For that matter, I feel like friend lists should be the same way. That's probably the one thing I like about Guild Wars: I log on, I see all the friends I've made in the game, no matter which character is being used by any of us.
Don't EVER force all our characters to be in the same guild, though. I understand why GW does it, but it makes no sense in a PvE-oriented game like DDO. I love being allowed to join different guilds with different characters.

I point out that any of those names can and will later be used by genuine harmless players.
Server Logs with IP addresses and MAC addresses should be used in pursuing the Harrassment cases, not the current slow and proven fail method.
If the Report and Response system is changed to something that is actually effective, the /squelch function will only be used for annoying voices that won't shut up(usually kids, but sometimes...). Of course, as it was meant, /squelch ought to be a temporary function, for Community reasons. If the kids can't play nice with each other, they needn't play at all. The problem with the Internet is that children can rampage unabated and unpunished.

this is why i like the way City of heros does things. you can add just a character to your friends list. (server based list.) or their account based char name (global handle.) if you add a global account to either the Ignore list, or friends list, it will do it for every character on the account.

In what this person is doing it is at least speeding up the process of turbine devs getting off their bottoms and solving the "Plat spammers" issue.
I congratulate this person but I also shame them. It is one way to get things done, But it is also the improper way to get things done.
If turbine can't keep its "Teen" rating by this then they will have to increase it according to their ERB to "Adult" causing lost profits from future and current gamers. Unless they solve this issue quickly.

Turbine uses an Alias system, and you refer to either an IP system or Registered MAC account type list.
Yeh was on Khyber on my new rogue and got a total of 3 tells from 3 different characters... saying the same thing... Was a very lame excuse of a joke.

while the character gets deleted, it is not removed from the database only flagged as deleted so if you get the harrassment ticket out it can be tied back to an account. Chances are he or she is using a trial account and does not care if they get banned etc

thanks for all the replys...
I had a feeling this was a bigger problem that didn't just target me. The tells are far too generic to have been pin pionted to one player.
if they are using a trial account, maybe Turbine could consider not allowing Trial accounts to send private tells... that would probably alleviate the plat spam also.

Hopefully it will motivate devs into actually fixing the whole "spam by tell" issue that has been plaguing DDO for months now.

are we sure of this? the reason i ask is that your character's first name seems to be your primary key (obviously could be a surrogate) and if you delete a character you can create a character with the same name.

Your name is just an alias. It's pretty clear from the server merge, ability to pay to change your name, etc. that each character has a unique number used to keep track of it interally. It just makes sence from a database standpoint in general.

I personally think some disgruntled hacker got a hold of the plat spammer bot and was playing with. Either that or it was both, a hacker and a plat farmer, but I don't think that's a great way to get you to buy plat. I figure it will go away, quickly.

Yeah, got one the other night too. Name looked like those used by spammers ... thought it was maybe a spammer gone postal. I reported it.
Probably thinks it funny when in fact they are the joke. What waste of a human being, I bet his/her/it's parents are very proud.

This is terrible, sorry you guys had to put up with that, and again I agree, squelch should include the whole account. Also, its getting annoying that squelch list is now friends list... i have no wish to know when people i have squelched log on. This is also leading to further problems as it is currently impossible to run properly on annoymous so even altho you are listed as anoymous, it still shows people who have added you as a friend when you log on.... which is causing endless problems for me as some folk just won't leave me the hell alone for 5 mins.

I t was confirmed by a dev that no character record is ever deleted from the db, that being said Turbine has stated that they will not ressurect deleted characters unless there is a really good reason, it is mostly used as an audit trail when doing investigation

Oh good, I'm not the only one seeing this sort of thing. Insult tell, log out, delete toon. Was thinking some of the WoW kiddies were lost and in the wrong game again.

I have yet to get any of the tells you are talking about, but I agree with you. I'm sorry that you guys have had to deal with offensive tells. Some people need to remember that this is a game that we all play for fun and that they have no right to be rude and ruin everyone else's positive, good time. Something really should be done about this. I am disappointed that no Devs have commented on this topic yet. Their loyal, mature players are being harassed and they are doing/saying nothing about it. That really saddens me.

ESRB ratings only apply to the content that is created by the developers. It explicitly states that whatever happens online is outside of the rating guidelines because you cannot enforce what people say or do over voicechat or through text chat - hence "Game experience may change during online play" being printed on every multiplayer title.

Not only have spams been increasing on Thelanis, I keep getting a message that my ignore list is full and when I checked in the help section, it states there is no limit to my ignore list. So which is it? I can't even squelch the current spammers without taking the time to go back and delete old ones!

Ive always been a believer in brains before brawn (but seriously I play D&D so what choice do I have). It seems these tells originate on Khyber. I would send PMs to the other people who have gotten these tells on khyber and all of you get in touch with the same customer service rep or GM
and sumit a harrasment ticket with them. Get a ticket number and try to get it flagged for immediete action so when it happens in game again, you will submit a ticket that referances you immediate action ticket and a) catch him before he deletes his character b) backtrack the name to an account. Escalate the issue beyond the initial service buffer and organize a sting.
Or................ just ignore him. Probably some 10 year old getting his jollies using the new curse words he just learned. He will get bored soon enough. Dont let him win...... all he wants is a reaction out of you and is likely someone close enough to all of you to get the satisfaction of hearing you complain about it. These guys like to adnire and see the results of their handy work. Very easily caught. Is there some kid you guys dont like to group with?

Is that why a certian person keeps appearing on my friends list................. he sent me a blind group invite a long time ago and I declined. He then sent me 3 more in the space of 60 secs.... so I squelched him. Hes 1 of 2 people on my ignore list that arent plat farmers and the other person got "fixed" so to speak.
Man someone needs to bust a Jay and Silent Bob on these guys!

There is a limit........... I think its 20 but dont quote me. When the spam tells were outta control a few weeks back people had to clear names off the list to put new ones on.
