View Full Version : DDO, more competition from the old days?

Wow...no, wow bites. and it is not old.
Most of the games are not that old.

Conan is old, but the age of conan is not based on the old rpg of it.

DnD, unless I miss my guess is the one that is based on a RPG from the 70s and stands alone in that field. LOTRO is not based on the old Lord of the rings rpg...

so what is out there besides DDO....well...city of heroes is destroyed by my favorite superhero game, the RPG 'Champions'...in late 2009 or so they say..

Any other games based on old rpgs?

Would love to see a traveller game....that would be cool.

and wish ddo would do some old modules like barrier peak and stuff.....

edit: Champions was a superhero based role playing game, even came with dice in the box (still got em!). The character sheets were really cool as was the character generation (faster than light travel and more). Combat is where it got me....
If your Hulk character punched an evil villian, the force of the blow had 'x' amount of enertia. This would cause a supervillian to be slammed backwards for a certain number of feet depending on tha value of x. If the supervillian went through a wall, the wall would slow him down a bit. They had it all set up so you could figure out how many walls of that apartment conlex the villian actually went through before he stopped.
That was just too cool.

I used to play Champions, I had high hopes for CoH but it falled way short in the MMO world.

A couple of the other older ones I know are in the works is Star Trek, and Warhammer. Great traditional table top games.

Star Trek looks like its in for a long road. Originally going to be produced by Perpetual Entertainment whom was also the developer of a now defunct game Gods And Heroes Rome Rising. Perpetual basically went bankrupt despite a noted 13 million dollars in investments, and since lost their company to crediters who sold Perpetual to another media source who says they plan on still launching Star Trek.

Warhammer looks like its going to make it before Christmas this year, but I have not kept up on all the buzz about it. I have more faith in EA then I do Mythic, both of whom are working on it.

With Champions, Star Trek, and Warhammer already in the works, my last hope would be to see Vampire The Masquerade. The game has a great history and a fairly solid ruleset. It would be easy to make several classes, using unique bloodlines with astonishing abilites. The game did reach some popularity with the TV Series "Kindred The Embraced". Though the series failed lasting only 1 season. :( It would still make for one hell of a fun game, we all know scantily clad vampires are hot.

Hello Kitty oddly........ and I will kick myself for saying it...... looks very good, not that I would play it but the MMO market is branching out further than I expected.

Disney had a Free MMO that did very well. Hello Kitty should mirror that success. A pokemon MMO cant be far in the future and all this opens the doors for other non-traditional MMO's.

The Marvel and DC mmos were shelved while they pump money into their movie plans............

marvel building up to the Avengers in 2011 and DC building up to Justice League if they can ever stop fighting over the character liscences. They own both superman and batman and still think its taboo to put them in the same movie. Both movies will suck btw.

A vampire MMO would be cool......... leveling would be very hard I would think.

If any fan of RPGs has NOT tried "Vampire: The Masquerade, Bloodlines", it is the best game I have ever touched. The first time I played through some of the quests I thought I would die from fright (though it WAS 3am in a big empty house hehe). Just make sure you download the latest unofficial patch, as it unlocks quite a bit that was taken out of the release. One note, if you try running it in SLI, you'll get a flicker effect, so turn it off first.

As for MMOs, not sure how well Vampire would translate to an MMO, though I would give it a try. Coming out early next year is Stargate Worlds. As a huge gatefan I will be there on launch day for that one :D

What I would really like to see is:

True Fantasy Live - taken off the shelf and finished
Marvel Online - taken out the trash can and finished

A massively multiplayer turn based dungeons and dragons game (over head view in the spirit of ultima)

I think you can really drive a story and character development in a turn-based format. Plus you can have lots of extras like crafting and all that because the game is already slow being turn based....... people are less inclined to rush.

Vampire the Masquerade would be ok as mmo I think. A great one for an mmo in the ddo tradition is Shadowrun. Both magic and tech with mission like set ups just like ddo.

Im not really feeling a shadowrun mmo. They have tried repeatedly with shadow run and it always falls flat.......... xbox has one coming out if its not out already and it looks lame.

Marvel Online - taken out the trash can and finished.

Never trusted that game to ever be more than just a cunning feint by both parties involved. Marvel sued Cryptic claiming that CoH infringed on their copyright. The only reason the case got anywhere was initially Marvel claimed they were developing their own MMORPG.

So then Cryptic wins the case, for obvious reasons. And Marvel suddenly red in the face and everything, hires that exact group of developers to make their so-called MMO.

Of course the whole thing fell apart. Jack Emmert has always wanted to make a game based on Champions. CoH was supposed to be that game. Now he's making it for real.

The Marvel MMO is dead-er than the Star Trek MMO.

I must admit, I knew nothing about the champions game and little to nothing about the IP itself until this post.

but Im looking now.......... and they have my attention.

Warhammer looks like it has a ton of potential (still waiting on Warhammer 40k to be announced). It is similar to DDO in that it draws its material from a game that has been around much longer than the MMO industry has been (though not nearly as old as DnD is). I really hope they don't screw it up; in the next few months you'll hear more and more about it as the Doomsayers claim its the end of DDO. Lets hope not cause every game that they have said that about has flopped horribly.

Table top RPGs are not generally designed to make good MMOs. They are designed to be turned based and to have calculations and increments that a group of math indifferent players can handle easily. Computers, on the other hand, are more than capable of handling all manner of simultaneity and complex math calculations. Add to that the vast divergence in gameplay situations between the two situations (steady small group meeting at regular intervals vs chaotic hordes of shortlived parties) and it goes way off the tracks. So making an MMO that adheres closely to a p&p game is usually not a good outcome.

DDO doesn't really try to do so, though it tries harder than most. Warhammer isn't even pretending to give the WHRPG rules any sort of primacy. Not sure about the others.

Which might be why Warhammer has a chance. DDO has always claimed to follow PnP rules and have often backed up decisions with the Players Handbook rules. I think if you openly admit your just going to work off of the lore and mystic of a certain world and rough gaming rules your not going to upset the hardcore players as much cause there won't be rules jockeys (you know who you are) floating around quoting page after page of rules.

Star Trek got canned......... no production on it going forward.

Does that mean it's game over for Perpetual and the Star Trek MMOG? Not exactly. The SEC filing says that Perpetual Entertainment's assets were transferred to a limited liability company, Perpetual LLC. The filing called for Perpetual LLC "to liquidate the assets, wind down Perpetual, and distribute the net liquidation proceeds to creditors of Perpetual."

Today, the plot thickened when Shacknews learned that since the SEC filing, Perpetual has been acquired by an unnamed media company. Citing an e-mail from an anonymous source close to the studio, Perpetual's mystery owner "is looking to use Star Trek Online to make its first major inroads into the video game market."

Star Trek got canned......... no production on it going forward.

"In March, TrekMovie.net reported having confirmed with unnamed sources that the new development studio is Cryptic Studios.

Cryptic Studios has placed a countdown timer to 27 July 2008 on its website with an early concept art from Star Trek Online as the background. This may indicate a date by which more information on the development of the game will be released but the purpose of the timer is as yet unknown."

Also good to see Vampire-Bloodlines mentioned. I just re-started that game a few days ago. Getting ready for the hotel quest......which has to be the scariest quest in any game that I've played. And for those who may not know: White Wolf and CCP merged in 2006, so a Vampire MMO may be a possibility...

Get your lynching rope ready.

I want to see a D&D 4e MMO. I think that if they used a power loading system similar to Diablo I/II (where you basically select a power for the right click) it would work.

Untargeted Actions (such as Second Wind) could just be a hotbar.

Immediate Actions could be loaded (toggled on like stances so that the next time the trigger goes off it occurs).
Encounter/Daily powers could be loaded in much the same way so that the next right click actives it then it defaults back to the last At-Will that was loaded.

Opportunity Attacks: Either remove them from the game (as DDO did), or just have them activate automatically. If removed, then Fighters would need a slight re-tool to make their Combat Challenge and Combat Superiority compensated for. Perhaps the Fighter mark slows the target (in 4e, Slowed means you move half speed to a min of 2). Or just make the Fighter Weapon Talent a blanket +1 instead of the choice between One-Handed Weapons and Two-Handed Weapons.

Actually, if the Fighter's Mark persisted for 6 seconds (or until renewed) and any enemy targeted by the Fighter got marked (and marks weren't just removed because a new enemy was marked, unless someone else's mark was placed) it would work just fine.

Powers that grant basic attacks could just go off (such as a Warlord's Commander's Strike). Attacks that set up things like "if target shifts they provoke an opportunity attack" instead slow the target until they make a save.

But as I have said before "It won't happen because a 4e D&D MMO would compete with D&D Online and Turbine won't re-release DDO under 4e because (of many reasons not limited to) the backlash of all the fan base."

White wolf wasnt the main force behind bloodlines, Troika was (and I have no idea where they ended up). I think white wolf was a last minute add-on or something cause their logo didnt even make it on the retail box.

White Wolf and CCP really need to advertise this...

For those unaware, over a year ago CCP, makers of Eve Online bought White-Wolf, first thing that people mentioned was that tis could lead to a World Of Darkness (Vampire, Mage, etc) MMO. Well in May 2007 they announced (http://www.white-wolf.com/index.php?articleid=735) that they were going to make a MMO based on the World of Darkness and started hiring people for this task.

Most likely, though they have not gone into specifics, the MMO will be based on the new Vampire RPG, not the old one.

So for those on this thread that said they would love to see a MMO based on vampire.. your wishs will come true a few years down the road..

Trokia went put of buisness shortly after bloodlines was released.. and white wolf was always involved with bloodlines, since Vampire is thier IP.

Right, but they arent the brains behind the videogame implementation (which is really what counts for us gamers), just the pen & paper background. Troika is to white wolf as Turbine is to wizards of the coast.

Personally there are a few I wouldn't mind seeing make it to MMORPG for (some wouldn;t work out but if someone could make them work I'd love it)

Shadow Run
Cyberpunk
RIFTS
Warhammer 40k
Call Of Cthulluhu (sp?)

and come on the creme de la creme, PARANOIA!!!! The MMO where absolutely no one ever gets anything accomplished :D

There were rumblings THQ (of Warhammer 40k Dawn Of War games) were producing a 40k MMO.

With Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning getting ever closer, I think that 40k Online might be closer too.

I'd love to see 40k Online with a less traditional MMO interface kind of like Huxley (a First Person shooter MMO) but with more MMO depth and the fabulous lore that goes with 40k.

While I don't think I would play it, the rumor mill is really kicking up some dust about a possible Harry Potter MMO.

Speculation is even pointing in Turbine's direction...

Ten Ton Hammer (http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/35202)

and

Massively.com (http://www.massively.com/2008/06/08/is-the-world-of-harry-potter-turbines-next-mmo-project/)

yay, let's add to the rumor game! Of course, even if true we are looking far off into the distant future...
