View Full Version : Monk HP Max and Fighter/Monk potential

I was thinking today a bit about the max hp a monk/fighter can get.

Initially monks get only 8 hp per lvl....but they get 3 free feats which can be taken as toughness. In effect given them 11 hp per lvl base (pluss an extra 6 hp thrown in at lvl 1). Thats next best to a barbarian...which is pretty nice.

But what if you only take 6 monk lvls? You can not multiclass a monk with a barbarian, but it may not even be a good idea to do so in this case because fighter get bonus feats....which is important if you take toughness as your primary feats as well.

You get 6 primary feats (1/3/6/9/12/15) and with 6 monk lvls you get 6 fighter bonus feats (1/2/4/6/8/10) and finally you get 3 monk bonus feats (1/2/6) with the fighter 10/monk 6 build.

This can enable a character to take 9 toughness feats total (base hp increased per lvl at that point is 17 for monk lvls and 19 for fighter lvls).

In addition you get access to turtle power 1 & 2 (+10 hp max) and Fighter toughness IV which is worth a total of 60 additional hp.

If your a dwarf that is another 50 hp bonus you can get.

This I believe is the highest max hp potential in game currently even over a raged barbarians max hp (due to being able to take more toughness feats). Even if the barbarian took EVERY feat as toughness.....he would not have as many hp...and of course this allows you to take 6 fighter feats that are not toughness (including stunning blow).

When using a QS (not that much worse then other THF blunt weaopns) you can use a stance (say fire stance), gain monk bonus speed to movement (just switch when running around places so no striding boots needed) and even have evasion (not a great reflex save but hey can't have everything). In addition when hitting with a QS you generate Ki...which can be used to heal yourself and others, or do extra dmg.

It's not the most uber build in the world obviously, but it's certainly interesting and should be the way to get the highest constant HP in game currently while still having an effective character.
