Aaah...Monks

Made my monk with two-weapon fighting (which doesn't work for monks) and stunning attack (which also doesn't work without 15 point of chi).

I like the look of the monk, the way they move and the animation of their fighting style. I also like the idea of wrist wraps and monk abilities that recharge i.e. flaming fists and stunning attack. I also like the idea of a high level monk doing 2-20 points of unmodified damage at high levels with their fists.

However there are some things that should be changed. The thing I like least about monks is the variable chi. Chaining this on a monk is like telling a fighter they can't use a shocking weapon until they hit or take damage or a caster they can't cast any spells until they get the **** knocked out of them. If they are going to make variable chi the system, then the benefits of having it need to balance not having it. Right now, I don't think they do. In combat you get maybe one or two hits with your specials before your chi is gone. If you are in a party with some good DPS fighters you'll never get off a special attack unless you make the party wait while you meditate before each fight. Right now there are some things that are just stupid about this class, but I'll keep playing it because I love the "idea" of a monk. Right now it seems like my cleric is a better front line fighter and she's a healbot/manabattery. BTW the Paladin got some great updates.

Cleric better front line fighter than a monk? Go figure.

Sounds like they got this one right. Traditionally in PnP monks are not front line fighters.

I disagree with the low assessment of Monk's combat ability.

They seemed very powerful to me last night.
A little squishy, but we had less deaths then 90% of my other Harbor questing encounters.

I do not currently like the Ki system. is seems only useful in a very long intense fight........most mobs are too spread out to really get much use out of it.

But for now, I will just wait and see how it turns out at higher lvls.

Mine are good front line fighters, but you can number crunch better in a PNP situation. You give a monk two weapon fighting feats, finesse, and some decent equipment and they match up to any other tank. Maybe that's what I'm really frustrated about. I want my DDO monk more like the monk I played in PNP. But since it isn't, isn't that a problem too?

The Chi system is really what frustrates me. I know from the paper game that a monk's ac is not as good to start with as a fighter. Fighters in DDO gain access to combat abilities that really are not dependent on a point system. They DO have to wait for a recharge rate and get them regenerated at shrines, either of these are decent game mechanic-ing. Even Barbarian rage has a set number of uses per day, but is easily accessible to the barbarian at early levels.

So I say, keep the chi system and modify it so that it works more like spell points, starting with a full amount, expending as you go, regenerating at shrines or through meditation. OR...make the monk abilities so that they can be used a set number of times per rest period like barbarian rage or combat enhancements. Either way, is more balanced and I think would make the class more on par with the other classes.

what character played by a veteran is not going to dominate the harbor?

anyway, monks can fight but (as currently implemented) they will not replace barbarians & rangers as the dps-machines at current end-game
