View Full Version : Who are you!?

I was at work today, pretty bored. I started thinking, if DDO could be converted to RL(Yes I know I play too much) what kind of character would I fit?
This is not how I would like to be, but by trying to match my own abilities to a build I could make with DnD rules.
After some thought, I came up with straight rogue.
The reasons for this were:
I am thin and small framed guy, but also very athletic(Rock climbing is a passion of mine) - High Dex, Jump, Balance
I can manage to bull**** my way out of a lot of situations - Bluff/Diplomacy
I have a knack for avoiding hurting myself when things don't go as planned - Evasion
I pickup new skills quickly - UMD/Lore
I love to tinker with new toys often pulling them apart just to put them back together - Disable device/Open lock
My eye sight is very good - Spot/Search
I rock at hide and seek! - Take your best guess
So thats how I think I would fit into DnD, how do you fit? Feel free to use any rule set have some fun with the idea, spell casters are an option so be creative!
-Jesen
P.S. I didn't use any tomes for this build :D

I love threads like this one! I started one myself in the Off-Topic forum a long time ago, but it got buried.
As for myself translated to RL:
The final choice was made to be Bard/Fighter multiclass.
I have a background in music and I also have a degree in creative writing -- music and story-telling abilities for the Bard levels.
My confusion came with regard to the D&D rules. I have a brown belt in Aikido and have dabbled in Tae Kwon Do and a few other martial arts. I also have an obsession with all things Asian. I wanted to list myself and Bard/Monk multiclass but it just doesn't work with the game rules here, so I gave in and figured Bard/Fighter instead. Monks are lawful and Bards are always chaotic, you see, so a conflict arises with my RL build.
It isn't like I'm at a temple learning Aikido. Although if my life allowed and I could fit that in, it would rock!
Cool thread!

If you ask me I´m a Human Paladin 8 Fighter 7 Wizard 1; Plenty Arcane Spell Failure of course even though I´m using +5 Twilight Mithril Fullplate of SR 19 (Family Heirloom) and prefer Greatswords.
If you´d ask my wife I´d probably be a WF Evasion(Specialized in Wife Aggro Evasion) Paladin with some Fighter feats, and my choice of weapons would be blunt like my attitude.
So I figure Paladin 11 Rogue 3 Fighter 2 with Mauls and Warhammers as preferred weapons.

By default I am a Dwarf Wizard. I have no charisma, no athletic talent to speak of. Just another short slow ugly white boy with no jump shot! OTOH, every IQ test I ever took says I could join Mensa if I wanted to, so on the theory that a high IQ equals talent as a mage, I am a Wizard specialising in illusion (since my career has been in the law). What I REALLY want for RL though, is Jedi powers! Screw spells, I want influence over the weak-minded, plus a light saber.

I would be a Dwarf barbarian. Not that I am short by any means but i have the stalky build so I look just like my toon on DDO. 'Rage' fits my temper of yester year and I used to be quite a brute. Oh the memories. Love this post.

An Overwieght human bard/wizard. Yeah, I coulda joined Mensa, too!. I would have a very low CON score (like 6) and decent CHA score will alot of points in CUstomer Service(cuz every seems to like me, weird!) I would speciallized in the school of trivia and Master of Jeopardy! My knowledge skills would be through the roof, like history and Useless Information. My background as a band nerd gives me a level or two of Bard. My stargazing skills also would give me a Divination school boost.

I'd be a mix of a monk and a rogue. I am very good with computers and other electronics, move very quietly, and know some of the sensitive points that gives a rogue his sneak attack (I've got Asperger's Syndrome, which makes me a geek). On the other hand, I follow a strict set of guidelines, would never end a fight without honor unless I thought it was the only way for me to win AND it was absolutely necessary for me to win, prefer to fight with my fists and without any armor to hinder my movement...
So mostly monk, with a splash of rogue.
Granted, I'm not a very high level, right now. Possibly around 6-8 or something. Probably 6 levels of monk, 2 levels of rogue, or something like that.

Pure Hagglebot Bard.
I negotiate and litigate for a living, so haggle skills come in to play.
Bard because I play a half dozen different string instruments (although not the funky lute that Bards in DDO play), as well as a home made tuba built from a kitchen sink (single sink variety, not a double sink) and 12 feet of plastic plumbing pipe.
Might be multi classed as I have been known to blast up the odd meeting room or courtroom with a delayed blast fireball........

By my rearing, I'd be a Monk/Pally. I've trained under the tutelage of GM Sin Kwang The since I was eight years old. Having such a strong background in kung fu really leans to me being a pretty dominant monk. The pally would come from that fact that I was and am an eagle scout in both title and attitude. While I don't like all the laws, I tend to follow them, at least til they are changed. I go out of my way to help others, even when/if it puts me in a bad situation. I have no aptitude for medicine or music (unless you call bellowing out John Mellencamp songs in the shower talent) and am much too heavy footed.

Lol, when I used the site, it came up with a Neutral Good Human Cleric...
When I play PnP, I often use a cleric, and when I started DDO 2+ years ago, the first character I made was a cleric(as was the 2nd)and I still play Saaluta as often as I can. And of course my family always said with my handwriting, I should have been a doctor...so maybe my subconcious is trying to tell me something. And I've always thought of myself as a healer IRL, not just of body but mind and spirit as well.
Maybe time to go back to school :)

My rules of thumb if we are saying "What we ARE" and not what we'd like to be:
Most of us are NPC classes from the DMG. Even soldiers, policemen, members of the band, UNIX system administrators...
None of us have levels in spell-casting classes, cause, well, CAN you cast spells? Maybe you are 1st level whatever with no spells trained
EMTs, Doctors, etc might count as 1st level clerics with no spells trained
You should only really take fighter/ranger/paladin/monk levels if you are in armed forces, law enforcement, or study martial arts
Nobody is a paladin unless they qualify for the above AND live by a religious code, and can demonstrate Lay on Hands for me.

Let me try to break this down for myself:
I have 8 years military, 5 in the infantry and 2 military police (1 various schools) so let's say about level 4 fighter (2 yrs per level in peacetime sounds right, xp is hard to come by). Weapon spec ranged (I consistently shoot expert). Leadership feat (OCS, became an officer after 6 years in).
A couple years SCA, so add Weapon focus slashing.
A couple years martial arts training (Army combatives, Hopkido, Taikido, Taekwondo), not enough for monk levels, but I could take Improved Unarmed Strike and maybe weapon focus unarmed.
I am a member of Mensa, but I don't know any spells, so 0 level Wizard (that's my next level if spells become available). I do have a degree in Information Technology, so if programming is the new magic, I may have a couple of levels there.
Let's say first level Ranger, I grew up on a farm, did a lot of hunting, and my infantry days added to my fieldcraft.
Probably about 3 levels of Rogue. I work in physical security in my civilian job. I completed Locksmithing training and continue to practice picking locks, so I have a few ranks in Open Lock for real. I went to EOD school (military bomb squad school, basically), so I have some ranks in disable device (also building training bomb devices for work is one of my specialties). I have devoted real-world time and organized training to the Search/Spot skills, as well as Hide/Move Silently. I have studied anatomy with the purpose of "sneak attack" damage in mind. Don't ask me to haggle, but I can bluff/diplomacy a little.
I guess in summary:
Human (8)
Fighter 4/Rogue 3/ Ranger 1
Feats: Weapon Focus Ranged (free human feat), Weapon Focus Slashing (fighter bonus), Improved Unarmed Strike (fighter bonus), Weapon Focus Unarmed Strike (1st level), Weapon Specialization Ranged (fighter bonus), Skill focus Open Lock (3rd level), Skill focus Disable Device (6th level)
Skills: Too Much work to list :)
Stats:
Str: 14 (In shape, some weight lifting)
Dex: 14 (Decent dexterity, I'm good at avoiding attacks, but don't expect me to juggle flaming machetes or anything)
Con: 12 (In shape, but not a tri-athlete)
Int: 16 (If 1 pt = 10 pts of IQ)
Wis: 10 (I've made some bad decisions, but this has improved as I've gotten older)
Cha: 8 (Not much of a people-person)

I dropped out when a friend of mine got into MENSA. Why? it is a joke anymore. He was a memeber but could not obtain a job higher than "line cook" for a fast-food chain. not even management... why? Watching him tryin to figure out the complex nature of a touch screen to take orders was too much for him.
He is only one of 20 people [I know personally] I think should have never been allowed to say they belonged to Mensa. Like the Masons, now anyone can join [with the right money].

I know what you mean. I allowed my membership to lapse 3 years ago. I initially joined for the resume boost when I realized my test scores from the late 70s were within the guidelines. I just threw that in there because it was mentioned previously in the thread.

Being a handyman ( jack-of-all trades master of none) of sorts in real life I'd probably be just a commoner with ranks in a couple craft skills and a couple professions. Possibly some ranks in diplomacy, bluff, or haggle as cross-class skills. No ranks in listen just ask my wife :).
