I had a Fighter/Wizard/Arcane Archer on NWN that was a lot of fun.

I know AA is obviously out of the question...at least for now. But being new to DDO I was wondering if anyone could help me with a build
for Fighter/Ranger/Wizard or Fighter/Ranger/Rogue that would be practical, and not super expensive for a new player.

Fighter seems like it would have the initial advantage for a first class just because of feat selection alone.

Ranger could be a good initial class because of Bow Strength.

Rogue would also be great for skills.

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I'm actually working up a lowbie to BE an arcane archer. So far, she's only level 4 (1rog/3wiz) and I'm not sure if she's going to wind up with enough BAB to make a super competent archer. But Arcane Archer is an enhancement available to Rangers (at level 6) and Elves (at level 9). She's an elf and I'm still debating if she'll be taking any ranger levels. My plan right now is to make her 2 rog/14 wiz. She's excellent with traps and spells so far, and decent with a bow. I'm considering two levels of ranger for the rapid shot feat they get auto-granted at 2nd level, but it's still up in the air. It would be a trade of as I'd lose 2 levels of wiz, thereby losing sps as well as higher level spells.

Anyway, the enhancement really only grants the ability to summon stack of 100% returning +1 - +4 arrows (as you level it up), but with the wizard levels, she'll be more like the PnP (or NWN) Arcane Archer class which cast spells as well as having the magical arrow abilities.

My 2cp.. I'm sure it wasn't exactly what you were lookin' for, but *shrug*.

Might help to specify what it was about the NWN character that made it fun for you. My recollection of arcane archers from NWN was that they had a "fireball arrow" ability. An easy way to mimic that in DDO would be to take a wizard level, or invest heavily in the Use Magic Device skill, and use fireball wands. The wands aren't that great (most things will make their saving throws), but they're still fun, and it's not that hard to get a lot of them (Husk in House Kundarak gives them out for Glass Phials, if you don't want to spend money on them).

Anyway, if you want a very effective archer, elf ranger is a good bet. If you want an arcane caster who uses a bow, elf wizard, perhaps. If you want to be able to do a lot of different things, and have good Use Magic Device skill, perhaps a bard or rogue. There are lots of ways to build an archer, so more information on what kind of archer you're interested in would help :)
