Hello I have a lvl 5 Cleric and my friend has a lvl 1 Rogue/4 Ranger and the two of us are having a tough time finding a good place to level. We did all the quests in the first area and all the regular quests in the marketplace. It seems like the problem we have is quests are too easy and we get little xp for the time invested, or they will be too hard and we will die a lot or are not able to complete the mission. We have had a couple lately, such as in the steam tunnels, where we did a quest chain and after having no problems on 4 parts we get slaughtered by a CR8 giant boss who we couldn't even hit. We have probably the best or close to best equipment for out levels and are competent enough players.

Where should we be looking to go for leveling for the next couple levels or so? Also what is the normal time to get a level in this range? It seemed to take about 6 hours or so to get from 4 to 5 and we only earned about a bubble and half in 3 hours of that time. Then we went back to the earlier area and kept redoing quests, which went much quicker. So far for level 5 we spent 2 hours in the Steam Tunnels and haven't even earned a bubble yet.

Also I just wanted to comment on two of the biggest problems we have been running into and wanted to know if anyone has solutions for these. First of all Shamans of CR3 or higher can be really nasty with their Holds and Scorching Rays. The other big problem is trolls. They seem to rarely miss, even though we each have around 30AC, and they crit all the time where at full health we are getting 1 hit. So any tips for these kinds of situations would be helpful.

Thanks for any help you can give.

For levels 5-9

Tangleroot series in House P (5-7) decent xp, great end rewards

Stormcleave in House D (5-7) Nice xp

Cult of the SIx in House D (Sorrowdusk Isle) (6-9) nice xp, loot, and end rewards

Xoriat Cypher House J (7-9) nice loot, decent xp

Vault of Night 1 thru 4 House K (7-9) xp is good especially #3 and 5

Tempest's Spine House J (7-12) fast, excellent xp, lots of loot

Thernal Series House P (7-9)long, with quests with good and bad xp, ok end reward

Tear of Dakkaan House P (7-9)fast, good xp

Caverns of Korramor House K (7-9) fast, good loot, ok xp.

Don't forget the wilderness areas in Tangleroot and Sorrowdusk. Great for leveling if you don't mind the grinding.

DoctorWhoFan has given a very nice list of quests that give good exp, but most of those will require a full group at your level (Tangleroot would be a good one to start with if you're duoing). For the Steam Tunnels end boss, you'll want an adamantine weapon, and more bodies would be highly recommended (he hits hard, and having at least 3 people allows for one person to be running away/shield blocking while being healed, another healing the one who's being hit, and another actually hitting the bad guy).

Some other fairly easy quests that you might be able to do with just the 2 of you include Rest for the Restless (House Phiarlan, level 4), The "Depths" series of 4 quests in House Deneith (Levels 4 & 5), some of the Everfull Flagon quests in House Kundarak (Ruined Halls & Forgotten Caverns are fairly easy, Chamber of Insanity & Lair of Summoning might give you trouble, Taming the Flames is not recommended).

To protect agains Scorching Rays, make sure to keep Resist Fire up (thise will become much easier when the cleric gets to 7th level and can cast 20 point resists instead of the basic 10 point variety). [edit - the ranger will also be able to cast 20 point resist at 7th level, but that's ranger 7, so it will be a level later than the cleric. Still, it will be a good idea for the ranger to take over casting resists then, to free up more cleric mana for other things.] Do as many House Phiarlan quests as you can on the highest difficulties you can manage (the Tangleroot series is great for this) to get House Phiarlan favor, then you can pay the guy by the mailbox to cast 30-minute resists that don't go away when you enter a dungeon or use a rest shrine - very handy. Also be sure to pick up the free buffs Veheer Fnord gives in the Marketplace before starting a quest. He should be giving them out for at least another week (might go away when Mod 7 goes live).

Good luck, and don't give up. You'll get there :)
