View Full Version : When i roll my lvl 1 monk at the start of the mod
I demand lvl one clerics to play with me otherwise im quitting the game. If im standing around for ages waiting to join a party as monk im quitting the game. If i dont get nice new robes that are in my colour im quitting the game.

Well goodbye then. With the whole server rolling a monk there will be no clerics

Yeah, it's going to be a rough couple of weeks as just about everyone (not me though, not interested) rolls a monk. Seems like a great time to finally go after all that low level favor I've been neglecting.

People on Risia are saying that parties of 6 monks have little to no trouble getting through most low-level quests.
That said, I'm sure there will also be some non-monks who take the opportunity to get some other characters up quickly, though they may not be clerics.

I think someone rolled a 1 on their joke detection skill check.

Most of my guild will be rolling monks so I will wait a month or so to roll up one. I'm going to use this opportunity to level my ranger. She can keep them healed and add ranged combat to the mix. Should be interesting. :)

One thing I learned on Risia... Monk parties tend to miss out on a lot of loot. Rogues will most likely be welcome at the lower levels, as well as casters and anyone able to heal. At level 7 monks DO get the ability to "meditate" to heal (as well as build "Ki" levels), but not neccessarily to full HP levels.
I think that until things settle down a bit there will be little percieved need for other melee. I wouldn't exclude any tankage from my groups, since monks are a bit squshy, but there's a new melee in town vying for available spots.

On risia did TR Parts 1 elite, parts 2-5 hard, 6 and 7 normal with a group of level 3-4 monks. One of the monk finishing moves is a mass cure light wounds, Not much by itself but a group of 6 monks doing it as often as their ki allows can keep up with heals. A few pots for spot healing on the way of course but still...

I have a 3 cleric that i am going to work on as soon as monks come on (or as soon as i can be on after monks come out)

Correction:
3 Monks levels 8, 8 and 7 beat Stormcleave on Elite.
2 Monks levels 6 and 6 beat Deleras (the whole series) on Elite.
2 Monks levels 6 and 6 tackled GM and Co6 on Hard (with a little difficulty but it sure was fun.)

Full monk parties of 4-7th level are tackling TR, SC, Gwylan's and Delera's on Elite and managing without any need for healers...although it would be nice to have a locksmith along on occasion for chests, it's not a big deal. Traps...wait...what..there's traps? Funny..we never noticed them..huh.

I think this may result in folks carrying around all those pots they're supposed to carry anyway, knowing that clerical assistance is a slim possibility with the influx of the monk.

6 characters of almost any class can beat almost any quest. This may become harder the higher level you go, but before level 7 or 8 there is very little that you can't do with ease without a cleric, or a rogue, or a wizard, or a .....
Even at the mid levels and high mid levels it is rare that you have difficulty on a quest because a certain class was missing. Sure anything can be done at whatever level without a cleric or another specific class, but until you hit higher levels or are doing a really tough quest at a difficulty beyond what you should be able to do you really don't miss having a cleric.
I'd laugh at the group who needed a cleric in the harbor. A single twinked character can solo the harbor with ease right up to level 4+.
Yeah there will be a lot of monks, but that just means that there will be a lot of low level quests in the LFM.

Nerf what, 2nd level Monk gets Evasion as a free class feat, and since any Monk worth their cassock has a decent dex, traps become a non-issue most of the time.

Monks are not way better then other classes. A full party of any class can do the same thing. 2 characters of the same levels as listed above can also solo those quests if they know what they are doing (ok some easier then others).
There are a few things that may be a bit overpowered (fist of light Mass CLW combo for instance) but over all monks play quite well. They even have supplemental healing and the ability to raise dead eventually (supplimental as in not using potions yourself).
Biggest problem is no open locks skill on any of the monks and nobody can cast knock.
Finding secret doors is easy with clickies no problem.
Traps are not a problem for monks at all.
Healing is fine...you have decent hp, excellent AC and self healing abilities. You also boost how much you heal from potions and other sources with a monk enhancement (that stacks with the human enhancement...you can get a 40% increase to all healing for only 6 AP points at a very low lvl).
Saving throws on the monk are GREAT....another excellent advantage.
So if you have even 1 monk who took a rogue lvl and boosted open locks your pretty much set for all quests.
Heck monks vary so much you can probably even get one to open all the various int based runes (except int probably).

Risia has had monks for what, 2 days? Already people are starting to roll clerics, mages, and rogues to help out. Personally, I'll be rolling a cleric for the first week just to help out my friends who are going to be playing monks. Otherwise they'll have to drop tons of cash for pots.
Pay me in plat and I will make a cleric and follow you around and heal only you:D

Twinked or normal?
I think people forget that half the fun is the challenge to be doing the quests untwinked.

Normal with several hundred cure serious potions. Gear is similar to a Permadeath player's. We just unloaded tons of plat from our other chars on Risia onto said monks and trashed the place. Of course, a few miracle pulls and one twink Kama(Ghosttouch for the wraiths) really paved the way.

As a rule of thumb we're trying out the monks untwinked to get a better grasp on thier function.

I don't have the time to commit to yet another toon, so no Monk for me, just yet. I do have a level 5 cleric that I can see might get more playing time though! :D He was originall built to give me something to do when no guildies were on and I could not find a PUG for my other toons. Alwasy someone looking for a cleric. Should be fun though. I will definitley learn a lot about Monks before I have to roll one.

I have a level 8 cleric who has been sitting there for about a year...
I plan on waiting for all the monks to get to 6th-9th level, and then playing my cleric a lot with all the mid-level LFMs that will suddenly spring up...

For all of those who have said that it would be harder and harder as the levels go up for Monks to go without clerics, etc.
Group of 7 or so (Not that many high enough to do a full raid yet) monks have done Tempest Spine, Were flagging for Titan (do not know if they have run it yet or not), have run Gianthold quests, etc. all without healers. The thing to remember is that these monks were basically Untwinked. Yes, we had plat (some lots and lots) and some nice items (rings, goggles, etc.) but no armor or weapons for the most part.
We have not been playing safe and running below our levels, we have been testing what we can actually do.

Well as far as clerics go, I am going to try leveling my lvl1 Cleric during the first week of monks on Argo, so if you see my cleric on then go ahead and let me know I will spend my time healing all those wonderful monks.
My Clerics name is Slyth and I hope to have a ton of monks to PUG with during that time.

Kaarth. I was mainly a J.A.F.O. (only level 8 at the time and came on when you were about done) ;) But was fun to run anyway. Went with the rest to flag for Titan but had to log before we were done.

My first monk is going to be a multi-class Rogue / Pally / Monk.
I've prepped the Rogue / Pally part at 1/1 and then will add a couple levels or more of Monk along the way.
Right now I've got a drow with
Str 15
Dex 15
Con 10
Int 16
Wis 14
Chr 16
He has lots of skills and his UMD is 10 with saves of 4/6/5
At level 3 those saves will jump to 7/9/8 or higher with some more gear added in.
We'll see how it plays out and if it doesn't work, I'll just start over and re-tweak :)
