Ok, I can't be the only one in the game that is really annoyed by the in game maps. Just now I was trying to help a group with DQ1, only I was trying to run myself (no problem staying alive) but since I hadn't been out there in like three months, I was utterly and hopelessly lost. I just could not find the path to her lair. In an hour of searching, I could not find it.
Do Coalasence Chamber and try to figure out what level and where everyone is.
Try to find out how to get to a person on the map out in the vale.
Come on developers. You mean to tell me with all the new 'fangled' things we can't have somebody, anybody redo the maps so we can read them? In many cases the maps makes things worse.
So I'm asking nicely. Please spend some development time on the maps. Like I said, I can't be the only person in the game who has a problem navigating with them.

Sorry, nothing wrong with the maps. In fact, they are an improvement over previous ones. No complaints for TS, I hear.

Im Not A Huge Fan Of How Maps Work, While In Quest If You Are In A Mini Dungeon/Cave In That Quest/Map, Ie:
Madstone Crater(Running Through The Tunnels To Rescue The Seer's From Their Enslavers),
Tempest Spine(Sorry Trissa:(, For When Your Inside The Main "Cave" Throughout The Entire Quest),
Caverns Of K(Again While In The Lower Levels/Caves)... Etc Etc,
The Maps Do Not Tell You Your Posistion, They Just Show You/Party members Way Off In The Left Hand Corner That You Cant Scroll Too.
Other Than That, Maps Work Just Fine.

well the landscape maps, like the vale, i think are fine
but yah, anything with multiple levels or caves, they become useless pretty quick

let me clarify: If we were a bunch of explorerers and were given a task, handed a map, and sent on our merry way we would probably do what we do now.
-Make our own map. Using the existing map, we would make our own notes. Granted we can't do that now, but I made notes on a piece of paper on my desk.Would be nice, but I don't see that happening.
-Go over the terrarain until we remember. TS, anyone?
-Ask around for a guide or expert. LFM "Need guide"
-Run madly into the night and clobber our way to the goal, cuz the map is only a guide and we are uber! This is what most of us do/did.
When I was a DM, I rarely gave anyone a map of the dungeon. THey drew their own, as we are doing when we enter a dungeon. Paper is flat, and they only got one chance to draw it. Besides, the really clever parties who tried to draw multilevel maps drew them like zelda maps. I think that would be just as confusing in this application as it was for the parties I ran, especially with natural settings.

A conceptually simple addition would be to create an Isometric view option (thou this might be a bear to code). For many quests, it would be a non event, nothing special, but for some (The Pit, Scoundrels Run, TS, Shadow Crypt, etc) it would aid a lot in understanding the 3-D relationships in those quests.

Now that is just being plain mean. How do you expect a Dev to answer you when you aren't being nice?

Ha! Since when is it our job to coddle the developers? If they can't handle criticisism (which in my experience with this game they cannot) then they shoud be in another line of work where you aren't accountable to a large, vocal group of people (i.e. the people that pay your freaking paycheck). Fact of the matter is that they maps in this game are unacceptabbly inadequate. They have been since umm well BETA.

Josh this (my original comment) was a stab back at Lorien for his comments about being nice in another post.
With respect to the OP comments I don't have an issue with the maps although I do agree that when you start going vertical there tend to be some issues. If this could be dealth with that would be great, but with all the complaints, issues, calls for new content, races, classes, etc. the mapping is just not that important. We have been playing with the maps as is and we will continue to do so. You learn to deal with them and go on.
With respect to your comment...it is not our jobs to coddle them but it is also not our job to berate them either. On the flip side it is not in their job descriptions to take our ****. Um one thing to point out WE do not pay their paycheck. We subscribe to a service where Turbine collects the money and then, in turn, pays the developers. There is a subtle difference but it is important. The developers ARE NOT beholden unto us for their weekly check.

Cave maps need to be fixed... Or added for that matter..... Whatevers up withthat is Broken. Everything else is fine. Explorer areas are fine. If you cant remeber the way (ANd Chains of flame is the one that genearlly give me torule out inthe desert) you can DL User made maps with Pathing even.
As far as Multilevel mapping goes, its just not realistic to expect 3d rendered mapping for all players. If you cant tell where someone is on a Map, its because you didnt care where they were going. theres no reason to "Lose" people in Coalesence Chamber or THe Pit. Stick together, ot let people know your not gong to wiat for them if they dont keep up with the group.

Explorer area maps look like sattellite images from space......and the desert is all one color. Makes it hard to figure out how to get places.
But by far the 3D dungeon maps are the worst!
Useless in fact.
These really need changing IMO.

Players can create very useful maps with waypoints and legends, and have in numerous occasions.
If players were granted a Module Builder to make maps with, then submit said Player Created Content to Turbine for review, I am certain some things would quickly and greatly improve.
This is the way to go IMHO, due to the Devs being so busy focusing on other things.

I think they should add cartography as a skill...if you don't have it
you don't get any maps at all !
but the higher your skill, the more useful the maps
I can see it now
"ok, are we ready for this?" chorus Ya, yup, afk bio, ya "Healers ?" check "Tanks" yup got them
"Map reader?" ............. "map guy?".................. "****"
