i've heard 3 different versions on how this works.
1. Ransack timer starts the first time you loot chest. Chest will reset back to original state 10 days after you open for the first time.
2. Ransack timer starts after you see the message " you have looted this chest often " and will revert back in 7 days.
3. after chests are ' sacked, they will reset every sunday.
I love doing the quest from beyond the grave, my record for completion is 1 minute. Such easy way to pull tomes...
I just want to know how I can maxmize my looting these chests on weekly basis with all my toons, so it resets and I can rinse and repeat.
also, I notice that the end reward gets crappier with each run. Is this on the same timer? Should I unselect end rewards based on class to maximize my chances of pulling tomes? I also want to pull heavy repeaters with nice stat damagers or disrupters/paras out of the quest if possible.

The ransack counter starts the first time you loot a chest. After you loot it 10 times you are ransacked until the counter resets. The counter resets 7 days afer the first time you started looting.
So if you looted on day 1, then 9 times on day 7 you would ransack on day 7. On day 8 you'd be free to hit the chest again.
I believe you have the same chance of tomes reguardless of class.
And yes, you can ransack the end reward too.

for some chests it's less than 10 times as well
ie. the two chests in the desert that drop bloodstone both ransack at six openings
I thought a 12 pack of beer and 5 shots = ransacked?

ok explain ransack to me :-).
A Beta guild that started on Riedra as Dorsai, then became Ransack under the leadership of Rhadamathys. The guild is still going strong now on Khyber, with twenty-fivish active members lead by Koe and a new set of officers. ;)

I have a rare non alcholicism high tolerance for alcohol (okay okay I have a russian/polish/german ancestry :p) so I have to exclude myself from this study ;)

Since we're on the ransacking chests topic, does it matter if you "use" a chest more than once to get all of your stuff out? I seem to remember that having counted as 2 trips to the chest, and you could ransack it just by repeatedly trying to look inside it. Am I way off base here?

That is an urban legend. Ransack occurs after 10 loot generations not after 10 chest opens... reopening a chest doesn't generate loot (unfortunately ;)).
I've gone in and opened a chest 2 or 3 times on every run and ransack still occured on the 10th just like normal.

Yes, but less likely.

This is a great topic!!
I've always thought of loot generation as some d100 rolls.
Something like this:
d100 when you open chest, 1-50 gets you lowest level loot, 51-75 next tier, and so on until like 97-100 gets you the named loot outta the chest (i.e. Bloodstone). Each ransack takes away from your die roll, say -10 the first time (i.e. first ransack means no chance at bloodstone) until finally you get to -100 where you get nothing outta the chest.
Am I way off base here?? And do the Devs not want us to know how it works??

I have seen it happen this way. In the Shroud I've looted a chest and not gotten the ransack message. Then won a roll on a Power Shard, went back to get the shard and got the Ransack message. Back then we would run 1-4 till ransack and then complete. So I was counting my runs. The next run should have been my ransack, but because I "looted" the chest twice in one run, I got ransack 1 run early.

I think what actually happened there was that you saw the ransack message one run early. It decides whether to show you the message each time that you open the chest, but the actual ransack counter only increments when the chest generates loot for you (the first time you open the chest in each run). This can be easily tested in any quest you haven't done in the last 7 days by opening a chest 10 times and seeing if you get a ransack message.

You very well may be right. What I'm wondering is if the counter is getting confused when loot is transferred to you and you go back to loot the transferred loot. Testing is definitely required.

What happens is that you loot the chest, and immediately as you loot the chest it is then assigned the "ransacked" flag. You will get this message from reopening the chest, but reopening the chest does not count toward ransack.
You can test this in the Harbor in the Millers Basement quest, complete the quest, open the chest 10 times, then re-enter and loot. You will still take the normal number of runs until you ransack.

That sounds very logical...thanks asp
