Anyone ever do this? Have you ever pulled a cool loot weapon that your main could not use, and instead of taking a feat later on so he could do so, you just built another entirely new character up and based him solely on the stats of that awesome weapon?
I haven't done so yet -- I'm rather new to the game -- but I've been tempted many times to do so.
Mostly I put together builds off of story ideas for characters I'd like to write about, and then just translate them as best I can into the Eberron mythos for this game with builds, but lately, as my main gains levels and the loot drops improve, I keep saying out loud, "Man! Another item I can't use! Errrgh! If I only had a (fill in the blank with a character class) then I could go to town on these questswith this weapon!"
So then I'm off in my own little world while I'm at work dreaming up builds just to use this kukri or khopesh or longbow of such and such, that armor of this or that, you know what I mean.
Anyone do this before? Examples. Stories.
Thanks

P.S. I was going to put this in the Off Topic forum but it isn't THAT off topic.

Since I only get 9 character slots, and theres about a bajillion weapons out there I tend to build weapon sets around my characters not the other way around. The only type of weapon I can see people doing this for are for repeater builds.

I don't really build characters around weapons, but I do keep weapons that would fit a future build.
For instance, I had a +2 Vorpal Battleaxe of Pure Good RR:WF that I had on my main until my WF high-AC fighter got up to a high enough level to use it. Now it is his primary weapon, since he has average DPS.

Not around a specific item. But i have built a character around Great Crossbows simply because good ones are so cheap on the AH. Smiters, Banishers, Disrupters, and Paralizers for significantly less then any other item type. Although it's near impossible to find good low level ones.

I have a couple of characters that use them without proficiency (but with improved crit ranged). A 15-20 crit range on a banisher for 100,000gp buyout isn't bad, and it's not like they miss all that often, even given the -4 non-proficiency penalty.

I am working on a halfling barb to wear a set of +5 Mith FP of stab rr Half I pulled out of Crucible. I also brought my human Paly out of retirement to use a +3 vorpal Scim of backstab rr Human. Sometime, as a casual player, I just have to build around what I find, cuz I find so little that is uber.

I generally use what I find or can buy, but when I pulled my Vorpal Dwarven axe, I kept it (couldn't use it) until I could trade it for a finessable vorpal, in this case a kama. I then took my rogue with way of the assassin and respecced her to have kama profficiency. She now runs with dual kamas, the vorpal and a +8 seeker/tendon slice.
When I pulled my own vorpal kama (RR human) I did the same thing for my then (and currently) capped rogue. On the plus side, when I roll my monks, I'll be able to dual wield vorpals when they hit the right level if I so choose. On the minus side, I'll have to wait until at least level 10 and hope I get the monk's UMD up high enough. :D

...how many greater bane/slightly uber kamas do you have banked on your characters...I count 10 on mine..
Got monks?

Sorta.
it seems all I ever pull are exotic weapons....
So at one point I had built a different Ftr for each of the exotics.
Most of them are now deleted.
The Great Crossbow guy is still around. As someone else mentioned GC are cheap. He's lvl 10 now and has a paralyser waiting for him at lvl 12. Currently having fun with a banisher.
I haven't deleated the heavy repeater guy yet, but so far I'm not impressed with him.
My Bastard Sword using Ftr will stick around too....he's a solid build although I have better ideas for a pure Ftr now. He does have a few decent bastard swords waiting for him in the bank.
And the one Dwarf I have still running around was built really for Dwarves axes. Other than the axes, Dwarves just don't appeal to me. But I am impressed with my Dwarf Ftr....lots of good stuff in one tough package on a Dwarf.

I cannot justify keeping them. Even if the monk comes out. I will figure out what they need then.

Closest I have come is making a Fighter after I pulled a +2 strength tome.

I did my elf ranger/fighter bow build after my wizzy looted a Tortured Livewood bow, and she's turned out to be my best combat character. 30/30 for strength and dex, and also has GTWF and Imp. Crit: Pierce to fall back on. I'm also trying out an ac build after getting my first +5 MFP in ever (in two years :().
So yes, if the item is exceptional, I might build around it :)

Think I build a rogue around a suite of +(?)mithral fp of shadow early in the game when evaision worked in fp. Had alot more character slots to spare back then though.:)

You're not alone. I kept pulling Heavy Picks on my 1st rogue, so I then built a Heavy Pick specced fighter. I'd be supprised if most of us here haven't done something similar at one point around a few good drops. Probably alot of Khopesh users here for that same reason.

Back when Gianthold first came out I pulled a +1 Paralyzing Quarterstaff. Nothing special by today's standards, but it was the first I ever pulled and I insisted that I make a character that could use it. So I rolled my Str based Rogue 13 / Barbarian 3 and started stockpiling combat focused quarterstaff's (which is hard to come by for now, not so much when Monk comes out.) The character now has 28 different quarterstaffs on him at all times, and when he is raging with madstone and sneak attacking the enemy I can average about 100 - 125 dmg a hit. I love that character. :)

I built a halfling ranger barbarian for dual shroud khopeshes ..
and tempest ..
and (maybe) critical rage someday :D
and at the speed with which I level characters, we'll have lvl20 available to us before she's of age :D

builted a rogue for all the WF stuff i get
I also built a ranger, when I got a collection of bows.
I will usually build a toon if I have a good collection of stuff for them, that no other toon of mine will use.
