just a thought here. but if you go 15 barb/ 1 ranger you can take the barb crit rage and get the 2 to your crit range instead of just one from DWS. i think this would be more powerful then the xtra crit multiplier DWS give ya. plus DWS is a one shot 6sec cool down. barb crit rage at that lvl would be for almost 3 minutes 7-8 times per rest.

So 2 xtra crit range for 3 minutes X 7 times per rest (every arrow fire)
or 1 crit range 1 crit multi 1 every 6 sec.

think of multishot you'll get 3 DWS shots off or 2 xtra crit range on every multishot.

Just my 2cents

Do you actualy have a +2 dex and str tome? I generaly think a build should be at least realistic to the person that it is built for. Using tomes just becasue they exist in game is a bit of a cheat in terms of making a build the average person can use.

Of course you don't need the str dome (so I'd leave that out) and the dex tome isn't needed until level 15, but still it seems a cruch.

Its odd to take a martial weapon proficiency on a character intended only to use ranged weapons. I tend to think that deepwood and arcane archer arn't very good over all. I've used them in builds just for fun but if I'm "rating" then I'd say its a bit of a waste.

Barbarian is getting you 9-10 str which translates into 5pts of bow damage when raged. A fighter 4 ranger 11 could get 4 and have a of a more well rounded set up. A bard 8 could get +6 damage and +5 to hit from inspire courage. All those are pretty comprable ways to get bow damage. I'd probably go 2 Ranger 4 fighter 10 barbarian instead of Ranger 6 (or ranger 2 barbarian 14 to get crit rage!). Damage is about the same, but you get an extra feat if you arn't planning to do TWF and the fighter str and weapon spec will serve you better than rams might which you can't natively cast and wouldn't have much mana for if you could.

Power critical is not a very good feat.

So on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give this one a 6. It works pretty well but it has a number of small problems as well as being a bit of a pearls before swine (aka taking a really high damge class combo and using it in service of a fairly weak overall combat style).

Personaly my favorite ranged attack set ups are Ranger (because they get ranged and melee together) and bard (because you are buffing up your whole party at the same time as you make your ranged attacks powerful). But I'm not against builds that try to be different, quite the contrary.

thx both of you for your detailed anaylisis.

sigtrent, very valid arguements there.

I editied the post, because taking kopesh as a feat was a mistake.

now that I am more knowledgeable regarding bow damage, I guess 6 levels of ranger are not what i'm looking for.
It was convienent to get manyshot as a free feat at level 6, but i'm actually thinking maybe 1/ranger 1/fighter 14/barbarian maybe be a better set up now. Bow Str is a must, and 1 fighter for the extra feat and d10 hit die, and 14 barb for crit rage II.

now I am at a challenge to redesign this build.
If I take human 32 pointer, I can get 8 feats by level 15.
It would be nice to have more fighter levels thrown in there for weapon specialization, as well as fighter haste boost, and more fighter STR, but at the cost of Crit Rage II and Greater Rage. Having a bow's crit at 20, would be nice to get it down to 17. Question : I heard there is a bow (silver?) that crits on a 19-20. If this is true, can I get it down further with IC: ranged and Crit rage II? I know keen weapons are not included.
I've also considered throwing in Heavy Repeater and Rapid reload in the mix - not that my str would help, but the allure of a W/P Heavy Repeater criting on a 15-20 sounds sexy. Maybe go manyshot, then switch to repeater during cooldown?

I also quested with a guy with a 2/ranger 10/barbarian combo. He told me about some super bow he was hoping to craft from the shroud, it was like holy burst of lighting blast or something like that.. I can't remember exactly what it was, but it sounded deadly indeed. I must admit, seeing this guy outkill 2 fighters and a pure barbarian with 3-1 kill ratio in Madstone Crater was jaw dropping. His Many Shot dropped 4 Ogres before the rest of the party could even get withing melee range.

The Bard-Barian combo sounds tempting as well. to buff with an extra 6 points of damage on a bow is nice indeed, not to mention heal spells and possible UMD usage. But again the crit rage and greater rage would not be achievable.

Right now I have a 7/Barb 5/Wiz combo. Must say he is a death machine. Haste/displace himself or Rage(spell)/Heroisim combo with a Raged 33Str and 29 Con. 2-handed he has +31 to damage with P.A. on (using +3 Flame maul of PG) or +23 using a 1hander. With this new ranged build I am thinking of rolling, I am estimating his raged str would be 41 (23 level/tome/enhancement, +6 item, +10 greater rage /w power IV, +2 rage pot)
i'm wondering what kind of damage bonus this would yield with PA on. i'm also wondering if ram's might would stack with rage becasue it's a size bonus vs. enhancement.

I give it a 2 out of 10.
