View Full Version : Who could be more ******** than Coyle?

I'll tell you who: The Venerated.
I hate this guy so much. At least you can heal Coyle, put stoneskin, displacement, resists, protects on him. The Venerated not only despairs you, attacks you, gives you mummy rot etc - you can't even use inflicts to heal him and hes a useless combatant that goes down in about 3 seconds.
Can anyone suggest a good strategy to get through the quest "Faithfully ********", whoops I mean "Faithfully Departed"? I'm playing in a static group so we have some constraints: two rogues (10, 11), two clerics (9, 10), one barb (8), one bard (10). No arcanes.
We had the two clerics, the bard and a rogue playing last night and theoretically this quest should be easy to shortman but keeping this guy alive was really hard. Even still, we got to the end fight with the bard fascinating the living mobs and the rogue/bard/cleric killing everything as fast as possible, but still failed when the ^%$%# drow barbarian shaman did searing light on the venerated.
Spamming greater command on the drow/scorrow and/or getting someone to intimidate the mobs attacking him are possibilities, but I'm pretty sure no one is intimidate-specced (except my cleric lol). The drow seem incredibly spell resistant and I don't have spell pen at this level yet, but I can pick up a greater spell pen item so that might help. Someone suggested flesh to stone on the venerated and that seemed like a pretty good idea, except that we don't have an arcane. :)
Any ideas appreciated!!

clerics can spam mass inflict wounds (it wont heal the mummy, but will draw aggro away).
Sometimes helps if one person with AOE spells spams them and runs away, taking most things off the main altar area. The mummy wont leave that area, so you dont have to worry about the fire arrow traps.
I also hate this quest, and have been trying to do it on hard with a party of 8-12s for a couple weeks. The rare time you get a party for it, they fall apart after the first failure.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?

Always rush to the end room first, it sucks to do the whole quest then fail.

Nice suggestion! Run in with maximise and a potency sceptor, drop a mass inflict, then run out. I like it. Thanks Lithic!
I'm a bit more leery with the AoE spells. Its way too easy to clip the venerated and get him killed accidentally.
I hate this quest too but I do like a challenge, so its kind of a point of pride to complete it now, lol. :)

Thats not a bad idea. You mean get the big fight out of the way first, then do the smaller fights?

yes thats the best way. Last room is the hardest by far as there are at least twice as many mummy-killers as any other room. They also get more of a headstart than the little rooms. If you can do the big room, the rest are cake.

You may wish to retest this. Unless it has been changed in the last 23 days, Harm works.
Edited: Inflict doesn't work as I previously posted, thx Arminius for the correction. :)

tried it less than 2 weeks ago. Cleric could not get inflicts to fire when targeting the mummy (not even mass inflicts). Harm was untested due the group's level 8-10ishness.

My wife went on a PUG three weeks ago, did it on elite. The cleric used Harm to "heal" the venerated. ( She asked specifically for future reference. )

hope it helps
Edit: BTW that quest is a PAIN!!! But, I like the punishment LOL. :)

I have tested it as well. Inflicts, single or mass, do not go off when targeting the venerated, and inflict masses do not heal the venerated when cast on those surrounding the venerated (though it does buy you some time, maybe, by drawing some aggro away from the venerated towards--well oops there goes that plan--your cleric.....).
Only Harm works. It doesn't make any sense, and it may well be a mistake on somebody's part, and if I hadn't seen it myself I wouldn't believe it, but there it is.
Maybe, just maybe, there was a reasoning that said that Harm has "extra powers" the way Heal does, and it is that extra oomph that breaks through. If I were to bet, though, I'd say "mistake."

Good to know, thanks guys! I don't have harm yet unfortunately, but I think the mass inflict on everything else will work nicely maximised w Witching Hour.
The inflict thing not working threw me because its a change to the way inflict works on every other undead in the game. Me and the other cleric were spamming inflict on him having absolutely no effect (I thought I was so clever too, running up to the venerated with Witching Hour in hand :) ).

Pretty Sure Harm is availabale is Scroll FOrm and would be useable by a L9-10 Cleric.

Bards for the win in this one folks. Entrance the room, sort things out at your leasuire....Drop a few discos at the same time.
Fascinate, followed by Song of the Dead and ta da....

Good point Impaqt, I hadn't thought of that option. On the other hand (and this is gonna sound distinctly less than uber), my clerics are pretty poor at the moment. Buying even 5 scrolls would leave me with close to nothing lol. Ah well, its off lootrunning I go. :)

This is what we did and it was working pretty well, except that the barbarian shaman was the first to come out of it and zorched the venerated good. Unlucky I guess.

ck and web are your friends here, dancing ball is ok, but those will work better. i usually do this one when capped and just quicken all the cc and single target damage i can depending on the character played.
