C'mon now people, Is it really that hard to just ignore the tells from plat sellers? The way some people talk about it, You would think that the world is coming to an end every time they receive one. To Me, it's much the same as being on My cleric when I forget to turn on Invisible mode and I get slammed with tells and blind invites.

In the grand scheme of things, is it really that important? I think We all just need to relax, and have fun. Freaking out about a tell (or two, or two dozen, or two hundred) isn't going to do a thing except give You heartburn.............

Now, I realize that spam really bothers a lot of people, so don't take this the wrong way, but I totally agree with you. Half the time I don't even notice that I've received a spam tell until I look back at my log after a quest is done. I treat it the same way I treat telemarketing calls, billboards, television ads, etc - just ignore it. It's unfortunate that it exists, but I see it as a "side effect" of playing an online video game. As long as there are people willing to buy, there'll be people willing to sell. I do report it when I see it, but otherwise just ignore it!

Not the end of the world.

Still annoying though.

Would be nice if Turbine can figure out a way to lessen (or even eliminate) it.

The problem is only getting bigger. Especially within the last few weeks, the tells are getting out of hand. Last night alone, I swear I got 25+ spam tells in a 4-6 hour period. Maybe to a few of you its not big deal or you can so easily ignore it. Yet to the rest of us, its getting beyond just a minor annoyance. In the past it was maybe 1-3 tells in a 6 hour period, nothing major. The problem if you have not noticed is this number of tells has skyrocketed. Its easy to sit there and tell the rest of players that you personally think we shoud...just ignore it. You are not us, you might not get as many spam tells as us. If you did, none of you would have that same attitude as you do now.

Almost every group I have been in lately is everyone in the party will start complaining about the increased spam. Usually at the same time as most of us in the party are being mass spammed. You can hear the grumbles over the mics all around after you hear that "ding" from 1 or more of the group. Are all of us really being unreasonable in suggesting this harassment be brought in check? I personally do not think it is unreasonable at all for people to get upset over this either. Can we have one place in life where we are free from real life spam? Can we just live in our fantasy world of DDO without someone asking us to buy this or that ALL the time? It is true that the tells will keep coming because there will always be players buying. Yet, those buyers are in the minority of players. Because of their actions of buying, we who do not buy get to suffer for it? I do not see how that is even fair.

DDO needs to take on a more proactive approach to spammers and farmers in general. This band-aid approach with this new "Report Spam Harassment" feature on the surface looks like it a good idea. But in reality it means and does...nothing. All it does is flood GM's with a massive amount of spam reports that are simply clicked on and deleted since the spammer is gone within a few seconds or minutes of spamming. With them simply logging into a new toon to start the whole spamming process all over again. When DDO put in the mailbox filter it only bottlenecked the rest of the spam into tells, making it 100 times worse than before. Problem was not solved, it was simply shuffled around.

Do I count as "us"? I get a lot of them too. But I have the same attitude as the OP.

I am curious as to the recent increase though. Is it desperation? Or are there suddenly more plat buyers? Is it just the change to the mail structure?

Maybe more buyers and/or more plat farming companies also. 2 new ones I believe in the last month or so. Remember, with the mailbox fixed from spam they are pushing all the normal spam into tells.

If you have the same attitude as the OP, more power to you. But more and more players, even those with the "just ignore them" attitude is only growing day by day to feel these tells are getting out of hand.

There, You say that You know they're not going to stop, so why complain about it? It's like complaining about the weather or anything else You have no control over. And really, how exactly are You "suffering"? Having to watch lines of text scroll by? Hearing the "ding" sound? If You stop and think about it, it's not really that big of a deal (unless You make it one........).

It is simple really, if we as players complain enough about it the Dev's might take this issue seriously. If you personally do are not bothered by the spam tells, can we hand over all your toon names to the spammers so they can leave us alone? If you are personally not bothered by it, why would you tell others they should not be bothered by it either? You do know that people think, act and have their own personalities. What might seem trivial to one person might not be so trivial or a "minor annoyance" to another. I can respect you or others not being bothered by it but I can't respect others telling us how we should think or feel about a subject. Maybe it is not a big deal to you or a few others, but I imagine that is not the case with a larger amount of the player base.

I use to not really be bothered by spam tells very much. Especially knowing full well they would be gone within seconds or minutes. Yet, with the ever increasing amount they are spamming us. We can no longer simply "Ignore it" any more. 1-3 tells in a 6 hour playtime, reasonable. 25+ in the same amount of time(or less time) is flat out absurd. We are not the ones making a big deal out of nothing. The spammers are making it a big deal because no one is stopping them. We complain about it, the dev's do nothing. If they do, they put a band-aid on the problem. It never was "fixed". It was moved to spam tells instead. Problem NOT solved. So I can not agree with you that its...Not a big deal. I can not agree with you that us players are the ones at fault because we "allow" it to bother us. Blame the victims, not a stance I would personally take.

lol are there 25 plat companies out there or is it one stupid company who can't keep track of who they bugged? I wonder if you are actually being harrassed by them deliberately for some reason because the handful per day you mention used to be the case for you is still the 'high side' of what I get now.

When DDO put in the mailbox filter it only bottlenecked the rest of the spam into tells, making it 100 times worse than before. Problem was not solved, it was simply shuffled around.

True, and this is definately more annoying than email spam was. So lets be careful with solutions that aren't just knee jerk and shove the spam somewhere even more annoying somehow...

Um, Lorien, I get that many almost every night, EVERY night. Being targeted, sure, some poor sap is targeting me. Even MORE of a reason to give each player his option to deny recieving /tells from trial accounts, or people not in his guild or on his freinds list unless he has an LFG above his head.

It is Turbines job to make the game understandable to the new guys, I will help when I feel like it (This is when I would uncheck my box). Given Turbines response to most issues, it is called "Plausible Deniability". Look that up, the same excuse high ranking people get to use for certain things. :) Smile, you're on candid camera.

As far as are there that many, I doubt it. BUT, it is easy to create your own market now a days with the internet, create 2 companies on the net, have them target the same audience, now make them seem to be in a bidding war against each other. You go to one, the main guy wins, go to the other, the same person wins. Don't think it occurs? I would give that a little more thought, it DOES.

With all that Turbine has done about this subject, do You honestly believe they aren't taking this seriously? You fail to realize that there is only so much that can be done without hurting the very game they are trying to protect. If there was an easy way to remove the spam from the game, it would have been done ages ago, don't You think???

I report all plat-spam as harrasment when recieved. Sometimes players in a group will comment on getting the spam and quite frequently the whole party doesn't get it if everyone reports it.

It takes less time to report then it does to comment on it on the forums.

Is the OP upset that someone is reporting their plat-bots?

when advertisers send text messages to your cell phone, do you simply ignore them?

when they call your house, do you do the same?

somehow I doubt you take it as lightly...

I like to reply with Add me to your do not tell list... but I always end up getting another :(

Joking aside the problem at hand is that the fixes for these spam tells involves a minor inconvience to the players. The players need to be willing to sacrifice a little on their side if they want the problem "fixed" on a larger scale.

Add a word filter that truncates the tell, so you have to click on a word to see the entire message if you wish to view it. (Player argument is: But now I can't send a tell to another player with the word plat in it: Like how much plat do you want for that?" Big deal... click on the tell and they'll get your message."

Add a time delay to the # of tells one can send per minute. This would work quite effectively as it would allow the in game moderators more time between mass spammings to find and eliminate a spammer before they effectively get through the entire list of players. (Player argument, Oh but I type too fast I can easily send more than 4-5 tells per minute. (5 tells per minute is one every 12 seconds... that's not that long of a wait) If a spammer were to send more than 5 in one minute they would get an additional wait period added to their account temporarily. For instance, 2 tells per minute until they waited out the temporary duration. If that was violated it would go to 1 tell per minute. If that was violated an automated ticket should be submitted to customer service.

Theres the checkbox to not receive any tells from Trial accounts, this one seems to be the most effective. (Player argument: but now my buddy who just made a trial account wont be able to get into parties because everyone is ignoring trial accounts).

My jerry-rig solution is to right click on the window I use primarily for group activies, ie party chat/looting/ etc and disable to incomming text type tell. Flag a separate window for these only and make it the inviso mode and make it as small as possible.

I've started to become bothered by it. Yesterday I got to the point I was recieveing a /tell for Plat every 2 mins. I was getting pretty damned ****ed. I'm not paying to play a game where I get advertisements. If I have to deal with it, I want a discount!

I don't get text messages on My cell phone (dumbest thing ever, You have a PHONE in Your hand, why not just CALL THEM?)

I have a caller ID on My home phone, so in that case, YES, I do ignore them........

And remember, we're talking about a few lines of text, a *ding* sound, and that's it..........(oh, and I do report them if I'm not doing anything else at that moment)

it seems to be of greater annoyance for those of us who are officers or leaders of guilds. As we are expected and want to help other guildies. As you know responding is generally part of the whole communication process. When in an instance and having 5 people expecting you to play your role, you ( well at least I) generally focus. It's interruptive when you get the ding from someone you know, yet alot more tolerable. It's worse when it's and ad, and then you get the same ad again a few minutes later. The one that really agitates me is when i am having a conversation in tells using '/r' and i get interrupted by someone trying to sell me something i wont ever buy, who most likely knows i wont buy, due to my having just told them that a few minutes before.

People use to complain about all the spam mail they received and Turbine did a great fix on that. Remember how people would say, just delete and forget it?

What makes you think we should just roll over and accept /tell spam? If we keep complaining, it will stay in the forefront and Turbine can do something about it too. Perhaps there is another inovative solution no one has thought of yet out there too.

my ususal MO is to report the PS in a harrassment report using the new "select a name pick an action" feature.

this weekend, that was not possible.

all my reports failed...

that is about 7 a day for 3 days. (21+ some dupes)

so I used the old method, opened a ticket, updated it with a second PS name...don't be wa****l.. then updated it because I spelled the second PS name wrong...and got another error code telling me not to update the ticket until I heard from a GM...

That was saturday...still waiting.

I have started temp squelching them

Getting tells from plat sellers bothers me. I play to relax and get away from RL. I do not want to be bothered by this ****.

I have played many MMOs and it is a problem. But I sometimes wonder why nothing seems to be done by the gaming companies, are the plat farmers smarter than they are ?

I really think we need a /tell filter. Let us decide who can contact us. Make it optional. Something needs to be done.

There are many games I have stopped playing because of Bots, plat farmers, people using hacks, etc.

It seems the only way to escape this **** is to quit MMOs. Which I might do.

A Tell filter would be nice. The developers can needlessly filter our biographies, so why can they not filter our tells? Just filter out keywords that only spammers would be using. Each time the spammers change their messages to circumvent the filter just add another keyword to it until it becomes an effective filtering method.

1 Tick box: "Filter Tells"

Turn this on and you only recieve tells from people in your friend list, your guild, your current party or can recieve "blind" tells from anyone only if you are actively LFG.

Turn it off, you can recieve tells from anyone.

What difficulties there might be coding this, I'm not sure, but its the best solution I know of.

Personally, I'm not bothered by spam, even if I get hit 5 times an hour (30 hits in 6 hours) but even I'd like to see this button.

I don't mind tells from subscribers, there infrequent enough not to matter.

Just a 1 click for trial accounts would cut tells down for me by oh.....99%!

Great idea!! Like their domain name... eg: www.buyourplatandleetitemshere.com. You can't go to their site and buy stuff if the suggested tell filter filtered out the url.

Although I'm sure they'd eventually change domain names to get around it

when advertisers send text messages to your cell phone, do you simply ignore them?

Never had that happen.

when they call your house, do you do the same?...

Ah, there ya go Lorien, right there in your second remark. That is the problem, all communication with these guys is one way, we can tell them to P*** off, or even be polite and request them to not contact us again, but yet they do. So, that said, we are forced with the constant interuptions. Does it bother everyone, no. Some are able to simply ignore them. Remove /Tell function from all your windows, some do that, but how do their freinds get in touch with them?

I would love for Turbine and the Devs to add a simple check box to allow each player to make his/her own choice if they want to recieve /Tells from trial accounts. Some would not, the all important New Player Loss issue, or alienation issue, but as I have said prior, I am almsot at the point of not caring at all if the /Tell is legit or not, I am just about to send them all to their doom with misinformation. So, tell me, which do you think would hurt the new player more? Not being able to get help from me, or me sending them to their doom intentionaly?

Either Turbine and the Devs do something, or I will. I am not alone in this thought proccess. If I want to help someone, I watch the general text windows, if I do not, well, don't bother me then. It really is simple, and sadistic in a fashion, but it IS the Plat Farmers with their incestant /Tells and the lack of the Devs at Turbine to do anything REAL about it that has driven me to this point. Sorry if it doesn't seem freindly, don't bother me if I am not in the mood to be bothered.

I report the tells every time I get them... If nothing else it helps give Turbine an idea of how frequently we get them. Even though it's not an accurate count (anyone who can ignore tells probably doesn't report them), Turbine now has a baseline for analysis... "x + y = z", where 'x' = reported tells and 'y' = unreported tells. Now all they have to do is determine a reasonable value for 'y' and decide if 'z' = the threshold to take action.

I had been doing the Free Tibet thing as well as the I need 2 funk, I have large bone thing, but since the plat spammers don't understand English, I figured I would need to become more sophisticated. I googled Chinese and Korean cursewords. I then copy these words and paste them into my reply when I receive a plat tell. I don't know precisely what I am telling them, but it is fun for me.

Well as I said around here somewhere.... From a business standpoint I don't get why they even act like that. Companies ended up buying into DNC lists in part due to legislative threats, and in part because you waste your time and resources if all you do is annoy everyone. You even lose potential customers that way. I can't for the life of me understand why they wouldn't respect a "get lost" request from you or why they would spam anyone multiple times in the same day. Even if I bought plat the company that /telled me 25 times would never see any business from me.

I'm going to continue to suggest that we limit the # of tells/hour for trial accounts that aren't on your friends list, in your guild, or in your party. And no tells until you've done your work for Sigmond and can leave the bar. It's a nice compromise I think that should slow them down a bit without totally shutting down new players. I suppose you could also say no tells at all from those not in your friends list/party/guild if you are on anon.

I've always had the same thoughts, and was about to post them(until you STOLE it) . :)

Which makes me think...

What if people reacted out in the world, the same way they did in games like this?

I don't get text messages on My cell phone (dumbest thing ever, You have a PHONE in Your hand, why not just CALL THEM?)

I have a caller ID on My home phone, so in that case, YES, I do ignore them........

And remember, we're talking about a few lines of text, a *ding* sound, and that's it..........(oh, and I do report them if I'm not doing anything else at that moment)

You, Sir, are like my boss who can let anything roll off him without it bothering him (you).

Then you have someone like me, that things like this are beyond annoying, they are irritating as all get out.

I get calls at work all the time from solicitors and yes, they bug the hell out of me also.

Why does it bother me (some of us) so much?

Who knows It just does.

Its very hard for the group that can let stuff just roll off them understand why the group that can't, gets irritated by spam tells LOL.

Ok, did that make sense?

I have started putting myself on anon to get it to stop.

For me, this issue is more than just a matter of irritation. Spam tells have inhibited (to an admittedly minor degree) my ability to play the game. I will give just one example, but first, some background:

I have been playing for just over a month. However, in a lot of respects, I am still very much a newbie, because the number of hours that I can play per week is rather limited compared to many other people I have talked to. I still have a very small friends list, so finding someone to group with that has a play style similar enough to mine that we don't irritate each other is still difficult. The fewest rate of spam tells that I have experienced is 3/hour (right after I first discovered anonymous), and usually it is much more than that (even when anonymous now). Lately, I receive rapid-fire groups of spam tells, 2 or 3 hitting in as many seconds. I'll get one or two of these bursts every hour, in addition to another two or three (or more) single spams an hour.

Now for my example. I was getting ready to log off after a disappointing evening of soloing, when I get a tell from a friend (I'll call him George for the example) asking why was I ignoring him earlier? He was putting together a party to run a quest he knew I wanted to do, but when he sent me a couple of tells to see if I was available, I never responded. I scroll up through my chat window, and sure enough, there's George's tell sandwiched between two spams. The spam that came after George's tell was large enough to scroll his tell out of the chat window before I looked down and saw just another spam. I must have ignored it as I am now conditioned to do when I hear the successive *DING* *DING* of multiple spams coming in.

Should I be more vigilant about scrolling the chat window and verifying whether or not every tell is a spam or not? Sure, probably, as long as I don't mind dying more often 'cause my still developing playing skills get stressed that much more. Just wait until the fight is over to do it? Sure, and then the other people in the PUG leave me behind 'cause they've already done the quest a thousand times and they're already irritated at me for slowing them down.

I could give a couple other examples, too, but I guess the point I'm trying to make is that spam tells have become more than just a minor nuisance to me. Everybody has a different break point where something will irritate them. They may not have reached that break point for other people, but they have gone way beyond mine.

I like the idea of confirmed/unconfirmed tells similar to the mail system. Then people could choose to uncheck incoming unconfirmed tells in the chat window if they wanted to, or at least make them a different color to differentiate them. And for the people that don't mind being spammed, they could just leave them alone and let them roll in.

It's not a minor inconvenience, it's a major annoyance that is altering communication between legitimate players.

How many people are walking around on 'anonymous' because they don't want to be bombarded by plat sellers that would otherwise be available for communication?

I was on an hour before work today and received 9 (that's more than one every 10 minutes) tells from the same site so I switched to anonymous in hopes of trying to relive the issue. So much for communication from the people who's friends list I've made over the last two years.

But hey, just ignore it right, it's not a problem.

I dont mind the tells as much as what is happening to the AH prices. One million for any greater false life item seems steep to me. 10 million for a +6 ring is too high. Obviously many people out there are buying this plat. Was in a lowbee group in Searing Heights the other day with a couple new guys. One guy, when asked it he was going to come get the chest said no because he still had two million plat. Whether he meant gold or plat I dont know, but my guilde and I dropped group. I prefer the old fashioned way.

I report them, then ignore them.

Sometimes it fills up 2-3 pages in my chat window and I have missed messages from people I actually want to communicate with.

I really wish it would stop. Please Turbine, make it stop.

The only thing lower than a plat seller is a plat buyer.

Please Turbine, make it stop.
