Is there a way of telling how long a quest should last?
Must they be completed in one "sitting", or can you organise with party members to meet at a specific time to continue/finish a quest.

A quest must be finished in order to recieve xp/completion for it. If your group has exited a quest for more than 5 minutes it resets so you will have to redo it, however there are chains of quests in which it is possible to complete a part or 2 and then come back and do the rest later.
There is no standard time in which a quest is finished, it really varies depending upon, quest, party and circumstances.

I assume you're trying to figure out what you and your group can fit in time wise for a gaming session?
Your best bet may be to post how much time you have, what levels you are, and let people make suggestions.
That, or in game, just ask in the General chat. I find most people to be helpful.
More specifically, as I sit here, the only notably longer quests I can think of in the Harbor would be Irestone Inlet (a lvl 4 quest), Kobold's New Ringleader (which isn't that long but if you don't know it maybe takes a bit more time), Durk's Got a Secret (can be kinda long), and the Waterworks quest chain.
Everything else you can go slow, take your time, explore, and expect to finish in under an hour. Rush yourself a bit and 45 minutes is more reasonable. (Again - this is off the top of my head ... I could be wrong.)
The other problem here is that any particular quest can take one person 15 minutes, and antoehr group 1.5 hours.

As Hvy said, the time taken depends on the party. Generally by clicking the the entrance you can get a rough time frame i.e. Short, Medium, Long etc... as compared to other quests of that level.
Chain quests are the only ones you can come back to though

Outdoor explorer areas can be picked up where you left off; chain quests you can complete one (or more) quests in the chain in one session, then do later parts in subsequent sessions.
At level 1-4, check out Cerulean Hills and the Waterworks explorer area. 2-7 can move on to Tangleroot Gorge and (theoretically) Searing Heights (theoretically, because in practice it's a lot better suited to 7th level characters than 2nd-4th). Sorrowdusk Isle is a good outdoor area once you've finished with Tangleroot.
