The reason for the new $9.99 price for 6 months is they know from the numbers that lots of people are month to month and are going to leave once the shroud gets boring and their toons are capped.

In order to keep new money in the game, they figured it would make more money to lower the rate and entice subscriptions which would mean more money as opposed to the month to monthers not coming back.

They decided to do this because they knew they cant keep up with development and the majority of money is going to LOTR.

So they dreamed up the "6 month" special price to insure they had the capital to keep going while they work on MOD 7 which will probably not make it until late July or even later. Kate Paiz said in an interview that in maybe 6-8 weeks the monk would make it to Risia, tack on a few more months in bug time and we are looking at June. The bean counters must have panicked stating there is no way to keep the base happy that long and we will lose too much revenue. Then some marketing genius came up with the 6 month pricing which overall will pull in more money overall to keep them afloat.

Dont think that companies lower the prices for the sake of the customer. Companie are in the business of making money.

Anyhow I did soak up the 6 month price,,,,,,LOL. I still have some characters to grind out.

I did the 6 month also but now I am wishing I didn't. I just can't commit the 2+ hours at a time it takes to do anything meaningful at the level 7-11 range.

Thelanis has a good population in that range.

7-11 is not bad if you want max xp and need to level fast. If you want to do all the quests at that level, then it takes a while.

Deleras and Stormcleave to ransack will get you outta the 7-9 range fast. Others will too.

What conspiracy? It's good business. If your customers pay for 3 months and take 3 months off you get less revenue and risk them not coming back after any of the breaks. So, charge them for 4 months and give them two for free (provided they don't cancel). Turbine gets an extra month of revenue and players can play more. It's a win-win. :)

Keep in mind that the special pricing continues forever, unless you cancel at any point. The idea here is that you won't want to cancel for 2 months while "taking a break" because coming back will cost you an extra $5 a month (forever).

The monthly sub reduction is strategic and it's going to payoff. Most importantly, it was smart.

Realistically, I have often cancled my sub for a few weeks to a month every 2-3 months. My historical subscription method with DDO would obviously benfit from paying for the 6 months sub @ 9.99 per mnth.

The issue with gamers is they become board when faced with grinds. If a grind mechanism is to be included to reward long term players then it must be made to NOT feel like a grind. And as it stands I only feel that there's been 3 grinds introduced into DDO which I have not been found with: Gianthold Tor dragon scales, Tome & Shield pieces out of necropolis pre-raid (had fun with this regardless) and the Large material componet drops from the 4th and 5th parts of the Shroud.

Allowing players to have a perpetual subscription for the same cost as if they woudl have been periodically unsubscribing seems like a win-win for Turbine and their consumers.

Mod 7 and the monk is in late may. Where did you get July from your bff sisters mothers brothers dogs sisters boss?
If you look closley you can here the 3rd Kolbald in the WW quest say 911 was an inside job and gives you the directions to a map that proves Bush actully flew both planes into the towers and telaported to the white house with his super secret alien power belt of telaportation.

**** poor conspiracy theory, in my humble opinion.

The REAL reason they got us all to pay for 6 months is because they are shutting DDO down to concentrate
on LotR.

The game goes offline tomorrow.

That is all.

I pay month to month, because I like to be able to:

1) pull the plug when I want to.
2) Let Turbine know I can leave when I want to.
3) give them a reason to continuously develop the game, rather than by predicting dropped subs vs. re-subs.

Aldan kinda has a point, they arent dumb, they have data to look on, and market trends to predict when there is going to be a rash of drops/re-subs.

When I saw the "deal" It smelled suspicious. I saw the six-month target time-span was suspiciously close to another major MMO coming out in May....as if to say "...this six-month deal will overlap the new MMO premier by two months, if people leave we still get their cash, if they forget to cancel we get another $60 bump off of their accounts when it automatically debits..."

....but it's only a few dollars.....and who can't go on with a few less Zagnut candy bars under their belt?

;)

*puts all logic aside*

See, they have us by the yarbles! Smart move on their part but definitely a tactical move that hopefully works in benefit of DDO.

I guess I am still having fun. Would like more to do, but that dang loot addiction......I just cant shake it.

THe other night I was running a pretty bad elite Ghola Fan run and at the end chest, I asked, "You know......I just wonder..have any of you ever seen a mask of the Royal Guard?" I then said, "I have never seen one drop......*chest opens*, anyone get one I said?"

DOH! Lookey here what I got....well get guinness, its a mask of the royal guard.

True story, it happened the other night while running my barb Jeevsy.

Its like the occasional birdie I get playing golf. Sometimes I want to throw my whole bag of clubs in a lake. THen I get that dange birdie and I am sucked in.

I was weak and fell victim to the subscritption, its talons sunk deep in my flesh for eternity. OH the horror!

Just arbitrarily pulling dates out of an imaginary hat. This was just meant to be a joke anyways but since its getting serious, then by all means lets put our serious hats on here and open an investigational inquiry. (that was a joke too)

What do you mean by meaningful? I find plenty to do at that level and it never takes 2+hours unless you mean to gain a full level or something.

Wait, there is another game that is supposed to kill DDO? I thought NWN2, Oblivion, and Vanguard already did?

Will this other game finally kill UO< like EQ was supposed to do in '99? :D

"I did the 6 month also but now I am wishing I didn't. I just can't commit the 2+ hours at a time it takes to do anything meaningful at the level 7-11 range." <--- I almost fell into the same trap. I went for monthly, paid for 2 months, and, cancelled again.

DDO concretes itself as a powergamers only game when it keeps the XP rewards so weak even in the face of declining population.

No conspiracy at all. Sorry you paid for a game you don't want to play for 6 months.

"Will this other game finally kill UO< like EQ was supposed to do in '99?"
Just because a game still has servers up doesn't mean it's not dead. There will be an active role-player base playing every MMO pretty much ever created that ever had any popularity, probably for the next 10 years. Dark Age of Camelot, for instance, is DEAD. 33,000 active players at a time back in the good ol' days, right now it's way below 5,000 in general. There are literally servers that rarely get over 100 people on them... MMOs are generally not playable without a large, well-striated (level-wise) collection of characters online at a given time. DDO, being so heavily group-based, is especially weak to such a thing.

Things have to be done to keep these games afloat. Look at the skeletons of old MMOs and old forum posts to see what happened to them! Think with your mind, about what needs to be done to avoid similar fates for games like DDO.

It's pretty difficult to get a group in the 8-10 range on Thelanis sometimes. That's not healthy!

I plan on dual-subbing for a few months, to see if it lives up to the hype, but DDO is my first MMO, and if this other MMO is good enough to pull me away, then you know it's time to go.

I love DDO to death, but waiting 2+ years for a core character class to be released, something at the very core of this game is wrong.
