IMO two options are head and shoulders above the rest for solo'ing and I have played them both:

#1- WF battlemage...1ftr(or barb) rest wizard. An "arcane psychoe/babyeater" (search the forums) or a similar build.


#2- A battle cleric.....1ftr(orbarb) rest cleric.

I find these to be amazingly versatile and powerful solo toons.
