Starting a lot of new toons this week.

Need advice on constitution i should get at start. For a cleric, is 14 enough or i should sacrifice some charisma to reach 16 ?

Playing human

What kind of Cleric?

I've found 14 is plenty for most cleric builds... Especially if your going CHR as well.. Leads me to believe its not a melee focused build....

You should be fine with a CON of 14 on a human.

14 is enough for any kind of cleric, but at the same time, sacrificing charisma for constitution is usually a good idea for any cleric.

The things a cleric can do with charisma aren't very valuable, especially compared with staying alive so you can heal everyone else.

my cleric started with an 8 con and yet he does well.

My human cleric started at 14 CON. Coupled with the Minos Legends helm, he's at 276 HP which is more than enough for how I play him (offensive caster/healer). Going human is nice since you can flex that Human Adaptability into CON to even out whatever tome/item set up you've got at the time.

There are 4 main types of clerics.
1) The type that think they are fighters and want another cleric to heal them 14 con is not enough
2) Half in half, the type that heals alot but isn't afriad to beat on stuff 14 is just about right
3) The traditional cleric almost all Wis and CHA and not much of anything else should have about 12 con
4) The type that thinks its a sorc and gets all offensive spells again 12 con about right

So to answer your question which type of cleric are you?

CON is important as there is nothing worse than the Cleric getting "one-shotted" as he tries to heal himself.

You nailed it. A good minimum CON (each costing 6 build points) for any character is:
CON12 on Elf/Drow
CON14 on Halfling/Human
CON16 on Dwarf/Warforged

My dwarven offensive casting cleric has an 18 base con. >.>

I think I had like a base Con of 10, and it hasn't been much of an issue. I'd say 14 is a great number to start with.

both my human and dwarf clerics started with a 14 con and do just dandy. I run with a couple of clerics with 12 that do just fine as well, and they sometimes get into the melee as well. Having the toughness helm, greater false life...even a false life clicky, all help and go along way in you're survival

my first ever character, a 28pt cleric, started with 10 con and does fine. She has 282 hps now. But If I were to re-roll her, I would definately start with 14 con.

All 3 of my clerics started with 10 CON. It has never been an issue, however on the rare occaision that I do fail a save and die, everyone I play with has UMD or the ability to raise. I play offenive casters and have pretty decent ACs.

Why not start with a 13 Con? Black wolfskin belt at level 5 takes you to 16, then tome it up to 14 at level 9 when you can equip a +4 con item?

Now that it's simple to go into a level 16 quest on normal and get +2 tomes from the end rewards, starting with odd stats is a lot less advisable.
