View Full Version : DDO Live Events and You!

We've put together a list of hints to help our players get even more out of live events in DDO!
Instances:
The new technology used by the Anniversary event allows monsters to spawn in all the worlds, in all instances, at the same time! There's no need to "hop" to different instances to see if they're spawning elsewhere.
We suggest choosing one instance and exploring it! You're sure to find trouble (the fun kind!) by sticking to a single instance and fully exploring it.
"Hopping" instances (which means, changing between two or more instances of the same zone frequently) only takes you out of the fun, takes up time you could be playing, and contributes to a laggy environment for everyone.Monsters:
The monsters are growing stronger each time they invade, so group up and take some friends with you!
Hunt in groups, but not too big! It’s a good idea to keep about 4-6 people in your hunting team! the larger the group, the greater the odds are that you'll become separated from your comrades
Explore one zone! We've adjusted tactics so monsters won't spawn where there are large groups of players gathering. Monsters may lurk in many places, waiting to ambush you. Get out and enjoy the thrill of the hunt!
Generally, monsters will spawn at certain times of the day, with other random waves thrown in for good measure.Phat Loot:
Loot is random and usually dropped with monsters. Changing instances will not increase your odds of getting loot, for the monsters know better than to leave their treasures in the same spot every time.
We realize that some players are snagging loot with minimal effort. We suggest making use of the Backspace and "U" key to target and pick up items; it's faster than clicking on them. Making these keys your friends will help you get your fair share! Finally, we suggest binding to the Rusty Nail or Phoenix taverns in case of death. You'll get back into the action faster!
Good advice.
(grumbles about a few days too late :D )
It is on track to be a heck of a Saturday. I am certainly looking forward to it.

Is there a way to get backspace to target items only?
I tried using it, but (Murphy's Law) it always seems to target other players, quest entrances, etc. before getting to the loot - and by then it's usually gone.
Fun event, though! Just wondering if I can tweak the backspace behavior.

Thanks for the hints.. y'all devs are learning how to run a new style of live event, and I've been happy to experiment along with you.. I think it will lead to lots of fun now and in the future.
That said, on the loot tip, if you are not already, PLEASE let us non-ninja types get something fun for the experience. It would have been really nice if F'Nord had given us an item useful for the market fight when we reached him Sunday.. even if it was a just a showy "Jumper's Hat" or something. I hope you plan a non-ninja item somehow from him or from somewhere in the Coda of the event.

What demon? what loot was posted for 1 mil gp?
Dear everybody: Just to repeat the obvious - there are NO demons in the Marketplace. None.
It's like nobody reads their Monster Manual anymore. :)

hence the questions I posted.....he made it sound like a single mob spawned and had good loot. I wanted clarification.

You mentioned in the tips that the demons won't spawn where there are too many people present? What is amount when you say too many people? My guild and I like to form a raid so at least 12 our guild members can join us in one area? So I would like to know what the term too many means so we know if we can still Raid together in one area during the event in the Marketplace.

Thanks for the info. for the record I don't care what you called it - was more interested in the loot you were referring to and if somehow i missed a named mob.

I guarantee no demons will spawn. Devils.. now you're talking.. but they avoid high concentrations of players from what I've seen, grouped or ungrouped.

hey if someone is dumb enough to bid on something like that be my guest. Its heal light wounds/2 rest. None of the loot is really all that powerful, and really is only valuable to collectors as they have little ln game use.

Why not just have the new Tech/ old (cake and tokens) spawn in your back pack if you log in during the event? That way everyone at least gets a random item for helping defend Stormreach?
Have a chest spawn after the the event and let every "account" that is currently logged in be able to draw from the chest for a random item... but keep a timer on it of like 10 min or so.
Or could spawn "noods" like the gathering shrooms, backpacks, bodies, ect... that anyone can click on and draw a random item from?

I did not just see Quarion post the words "Phat Loot" now did I? Because that would just be sad ;)
And this Titan wand seems not only to have a warforged symbol, but only appears to heal that kind of race...or so was the one I got from another....
Yeah, here's how the so called loot on DEVILS (one more demon claim and I'll start betting people and win hundreds of thousands of gold in wagers) works: Like the Menchurian Desert, enemies have a chance of being targeted like collectables. Instead of the (oh so valuable) bronze tokens however, they may drop items such as large gem, collectable and ingredients bags as an example. Other treasures may be obtained and the before was not a guaranteed or complete list of possible rewards. As stated, only ONE person clicking on the dropped enemy may claim the reward.
And what would also be helpful for tips is advising some of the people who never did the Vale/Vale Quests or the Shroud raid (or are not eligible yet) how to best survive on the enemy's home plane. For example:
Devil races (Green devils, Orthon) are immune to fire, but have no problem casting or bringing it to you if possible. Make sure you use other methods of elemental attack and shield yourself fom fire attacks.
The devilfolk of Shavarath are from a battle plane, which means they can instantly teleport to any being to start combat if in line of sight.
Thinking you can hide from the devil races? Good luck! They appear to have an amazingly high spot skill and may also have True Seeing up at any time.
Yes, that beastie *did* teleport while petrified, but cannot attack. Be certain to understand the UI is not 100% fixed and be ready to run over to the enemies before those "helpless combatant" spells run out.
Are you Good? A Spellcaster? An easy looking target? Then it's likely *you* will be targeted first with a teleported attack.
Think the'll never make that saving throw? Think again: The devilfolk have Spell Resistance and confirmed attempts of a Caster Level check of 35 have resulted in failure at higher CR's! Make sure you have your more powerful spell penetrations equiped (or cast spells that are not resistable at all) as well as having Mind Fog or other saving throw lowering conditions active. And yes...they do two-step nicely in Otto's spells once failed their saving throws or irresistably dancing.
No greater evil oputsider bane? Try a Greater lawful outsider bane instead! Note: if you actually find a DEMON somwhere else, use Greater CHAOTIC outsider bane instead if no evil option still.
Not getting those spell/banishing attempts? Curse them first! Every negative modifier helps when you have this powerful an enemy.
Just have the worst luck as a(n) (arcane or item) caster? Try Glitterdust! Glitterdust has NO SR, can be heightened/enhanced via scroll or wand, and even works on "no mind affecting" creatures such as undead! Plus, it reveals invisible creatures, stopping those invisible feindish creatures from "partnering" in a sneak attack....
Using area spells to slow them down? Remember, teleportation doesn't require any movement and can *instantly* remove them from those spells. Make sure you can reenter the area of those spells and divert their focus fast if they decide to "thank" you for that casting!
It's hit the proverbial fan? Make sure you or somebody you know (that can guarantee casting it at any time) can cast DImension door, Teleport and/or Greater Teleport to get the heck out of Shavarath fast! You may have to re-enter, but it's faster than paying your repair bill and re-entering anyway!
And finally......
Be careful and use tactics over that barbarian inspired running straight into their tactically waiting armies! No matter how "Pwned Uber L33t" you think you are, there's always some overtweaked enemy made just to kill you Batman.......
(These tips are not 100% guaranteed and are guidelines only.)

I disagree I've pulled Every Large Bag - and at least 10 Large Ingredients (Not to mention others of various sizes) The loot is there, you just have to look hard enough, also make sure to turn your sound effects up.. Will help you to hear when it is dropping.

I want to pull a Phat Red Convertible to drive around in Stormcleave with. I would run that thing right up into some giant's kneecaps and tip him over. Then I'd hop out and start hackin' on him with a giant stalker knife for denting my ride. :D
Speaking of giants. Where are all the female giants? Of course they should be Drow Female giants.

If you are collecting the ingredients then running the shroud will eassily make up for not pulling one in the event. The bags are certainly nice, but not required. Everything else is event level stuff.

The loot is extremely good at these events - I've pulled 0 large ingredients in my last 4 shroud runs of part 4. I'm not a great ninja looter so have gotten none at the events either - but I know guys who are getting a lot of them.
Given the Thelanis auction prices on large ingredients are 1.5 mill gp each - that's a pretty nice loot drop for doing nothing but hitting backspace and u.

Ok then have the engine work that way. We have guild members in many instances in the same location and the action is very different. Changing instances seemed to be required to have any fun. I would be great if the mobs spawned at the same time in each instance. I think the key word is allow. I hope the devs start to allow this to happen.

Quarion -
Thanks so much for addressing all of this - if nothing else it will help us players make the most out of Saturday, which has been touted to be "big hurrah".
However, I would like to take this opportunity to politely state my dislike for how the loot is being dropped/distributed. The advise to "get familiar with your backspace and u keys" seems to only benefit those with good twitch skills, while keeping the loot distribution a "free for all" that leaves a lot of people feeling gipped. I will state that I am one of those people who's been using backspace and u like a fiend during mob spawns. The only time I got anything was on Sunday and that was because I was in a mostly empty instance when some mobs and loot spawned. I took some, but not all of the items that dropped and left the rest for whoever wanted it.
Is there no way that you can have whatever items are part of the random drops auto-spawn in player's backpacks for taking part in the event or maybe have the mobs spawn with a chest every so often that has instanced loot for players that maybe refreshes every so often with mob spawn. Just throwing some ideas out there. For example, in UO when they ran the "Treasures of Tokuno" event by killing monsters in the new area you had a chance to have a minor artifact spawn in your backpack. The harder the monster and the more you killed, the better your chances. If you hunted stuff long enough, you would wind up with an random artifact from a list. I'm not saying to employ that same exact method, as it would obviously favor casters in this case, but just bringing it up as an example.
Because people will experience lag (some more than others) this current system seems also to reward those with faster/better connections. I've noticed that when mobs spawn in an instance there's a period of lag associated with them spawning (noticed this several times without seeing people zone in from another instance, which, despite what is said here I'm afraid isn't going to stop), and it's worse for some than others.
Just some (probably not well stated) concerns and thoughts I have about this whole process of dropping loot. Who knows, maybe you all have something up your sleeves at the end of this event where we ALL can speak to an NPC and choose some kind of reward or something.
Thanks for all your effort in developing and improving live events in DDO!

Gotta agree, Turbine needs to help out those of us who are healing everyone in sight, because we are clerics or other healers, trying to keep everyone alive and not having the chance to grab stuff at the "Ka-Ching" sound. Which normally occurs during the battle. Other than that, it has been fun and I'm looking forward to Saturday.

I beamed around instances to be involved in invasions because they occurred at random times. I was involved in 6 invasions in six different instances.
At first, I was on my level 10 who died way too many times. I was never ever able to pull one bit of treasure.
Yes, I use backspace and U but it no worky for me.
I did not give up though.
Still, I then brought in my level 16. That toon was then involved in two more invasions as it was later in the evening. I slayed several critters with destruction/slay living. I was even casting mass cure criticals for anyone and everyone.
I never received a thank you. Probably because everyone was to busy.
I never, ever got a treasure item. Yes, I saw the bags after the fact.
Now, me thinks that the characters that are getting the treasures are probably sitting in stealth mode, not helping the group, and trying to target the treasure bags. I saw a few toons doing that.
There was even one toon that I saw that was debuffing people.
Female toon
Name = animal species + an item used in shipping
Will I be there Saturday? Yes. I will once again try to get some of this neat loot people are getting. But I suspect I will once again get the shaft.
Will I be slaying anything? Not for randoms. If I see toons doing nothing, then I will then do nothing.
The game needs more fairness in getting of loot at these events. I like the idea of a treasure chest, someone else said this, appearing where it lists the amount of kills you had an then entitles you to an item.
Only suggestions as I do not know which character type does the best
Do something to encourage team play at the events and let players play their character types
In no way shape or form am I implying that these numbers are written in stone, just an idea that needs more refining or flaming
Fighters, Barbarians - every 10 kills, pull one item
Sorcerors and Wizards - every 8 kills, pull one item
Paladins - every 7 kills pull an item
Clerics - if you cast cure spells, heals, mass heals and use up at least 400 spell points to do it, that counts as five kills
Clerics - every five kills pull one item, for the battle clerics
Bards - if you use up all your songs to help the gathering that counts as four kills.
Bards every four kills, pull an item
Ranger - every six kills pull an item
Rogues - every five kills, pull one item
Oops, family emergency, more thoughts later.
Right now, if I pull nothing out of this event then I will never do another one. I will just work on my characters in quests instead of helping everyone else get stuff.

Been in over a dozen fights with the devils from the first attack until now. Haven't picked up any loot. Love the event, but disappointed with the loot system used. Too many greedy folks out there.
Devs, there are many complaints about this event, but I hope you're taking the ones about loot to heart. Most of us who play DDO have probably had experience with other games like EQ where there was ninja looting. Quite frankly, if this game keeps moving in that direction to allow random loot to drop and get snagged by whoever is fastest then many of us will probably just leave.
Proposal (since it's too late and you didn't ask me to begin with though I'd have saved you a lot of heartache) for future events:
Instead of dropping loot, have the mobs drop a unique collectible. Like mobs that drop the bronze tokens in the desert, or mobs that drop the various other collectibles, have a unique collectible appear as a shiny clicky that everyone can click on. When you click on it you get one of the collectibles. These collectibles don't bind, they can be traded or given away. At the end of the big event, have the quest giver (in this case would have been Veheer) thank the participants for their defense or actions to assist the city. Then have a dialogue, just like the Invaders Token guy, where you can turn in your unique collectibles for items at that point.
This way, people who actually defend the city, assist others, have a chance to get the loot they richly deserve. Yes, the ninja looters still get theirs, but I'd rather reward them than punish the players who are participating in your events, which is happening now when the ninja looters grab the loot while the player participating get nothing.

I agree with this one, even in dungeons this has always been a problem with next interactable. Have a next loot interactable would be cool to where it excludes barrels, doors, players, etc. would be very helpful, not just for these kind of events but normal questing.

On a last note. 3 Cheers for turbine for creating this event. This has been very enjoyable, even without getting loot. Its fun to have a difference, to have a storyline that is unique, and can't be repeated. Unlike quests that can be repeated, this is almost like a real life protect the city event, and it can't be redone. Its very very enjoyable and is something I look forward to seeing more of this type of thing. So 3 BIG CHEERS to you guys at turbine for coming up with this idea and implementing it. Im sure its not easy to do, but it makes the game fun. GOOD JOB AND DO MORE OF THESE AS THIS HAS ACTUALLY CAUSED ME TO PUT ASIDE REAL LIFE STUFF JUST TO LOGON AND PARTICIPATE!!!!

An Eternal Titan Wand is invaluable to a class that has no healing ability. Since the wand is HEAL Light Wounds, which means heals equally WF and fleshy, it can be used to get an incapacitated player up immediately without having to make a Heal check. I just payed 10k PP for one at auction and have already sent it to my Fighter.

I picked up an Eternal Titan Wand with my lowbie, he's a Barb Fighter with about as much healing as an AK-47 assault rifle, the wand will heal him for about 2-5% of his health, and is useless in all other respects as you can only use it on yourself.

I too agree that everyone should be able to get SOMETHING. I don't even care if it's tasty hams. I myself am sporting a cleric, not to mention a 3 year old laptop. So when the lag gets going, I turn around. However, what thanks do we get for staying on the back lines keeping all the hackers alive? Well...low spell points and sometimes in need of more ingredients. I think it would be wise to give everyone who is in the instance at that specific time a chance to get any type of item. Wether it be a +3 scepter or a Masterwork throwing dagger, everyone should get the opportunity. But that's just coming from a clerics stand point. Just take it into consideration.

Doesn't work on others? Ah well. Looks cool at least. :D

Count me as a member of the "havent picked up a single thing but have spent tens of thousands on repairs" crowd.
That said, I have really enjoyed the content and the added gameplay. My guild and I are there for every event and we will be there tonight to finally end this scourge once and for all.
Please keep these kinds of events coming Turbine...the 20 MP instances tell me that Im not alone in enjoying them. I would ask that there is a bit more loot "to go around" in the future...and that people who play late (and aussies) can get in on more of the fun.

same. seems out of the crowds waiting for the spawns in the market maybe 20% fight the bad guys while the rest wait to vulture the loot. I especially like watching the clerics loot while standing near them dead.
lots of fun.. yay... no really..

Alas, this is one reason I haven't been able to bring myself to sell it, beyond that, when you have a heap of hp any healing is good healing;)

Yes i agree with the item idea. I don't know about other fighters but I know that in the heat of battle I am just trying to kill everything and stay alive until the battle is over then clean up the cheasts afterwords. Anything dropped by these devils I would never get because I can not stop fighting to pick up anything. And by the time I get time to pick anything up someone, that i helped keep alive and did not do anything but watch for loot, has already picked it up for me and it is gone.
It would be nice to see a chest or a token for everyone to pick up or lots of tokins that can only pick be picked up by a certain character just like in the chests and then turned in for items that would be higher in token costs like a (+4vorpal bastard sword ) being 100 Tokens or such thing like that. I think that would be the fairest thing. Lots better than the loot nijas taking everything then selling it for plat then selling it to plat harvesters only to be sold to the fighters so they can afford to repair everything that got damaged during the original fight.

Been in a few of the spawns with my Cleric, and it's hard to do. There are so many people standing around, in multiple locations, that it's impossible to toggle through everyone and heal them all. I throw mass cures on big groups and heal/res as i can after battle.
Yet to see any loot myself...too busy to check for it! :)

Alas, I am as well one of these die, repair, and get nothing in return people. I am also a Cleric and died due to the insane lag that hits in the marketplace. It is hard to enjoy an event where lag kills you. I think this is a cool event just wish I could take part in it instead of lag death to the creatures that spawn.

There was tremendous lag on Instance 7 and I never saw the monster but I was hit a few times. I am dissapointed that I wasted my time for this event. It is 9:32 EST I guess it is over now.

well i have to say the event was awsome except for the killer lag.
the lvl 33s were awsome but i wish i couldve seen them smothly and not in annoying lag spikes.

this event was a complete waste of time.....but I am sure we all thank you for the nice lag, large repair bills from lag deaths, and no loot....Happy B-Day DDO

The new technology used by the Anniversary event allows monsters to spawn in all the worlds, in all instances, at the same time!
This did not work as you indicate. I knew people in various instances and they were not happening at the same time - could this be another symptom of lag? They were running around looking in all kinds of places and nothing was spawning meanwhile we were hip deep in combat.
Explore one zone! We've adjusted tactics so monsters won't spawn where there are large groups of players gathering. Monsters may lurk in many places, waiting to ambush you. Get out and enjoy the thrill of the hunt!
All this meant was they were spawned in the same places and some in different areas.
Loot is random and usually dropped with monsters. Changing instances will not increase your odds of getting loot, for the monsters know better than to leave their treasures in the same spot every time.
False - if you are a good ninja loot runner you in fact can increase your odds.
We realize that some players are snagging loot with minimal effort. We suggest making use of the Backspace and "U" key to target and pick up items; it's faster than clicking on them. Making these keys your friends will help you get your fair share!
I realize this is probably the best suggestion that is out there with how it currently is set up but really this still does not really help that much but atleast tries to address the issue.
Finally, we suggest binding to the Rusty Nail or Phoenix taverns in case of death. You'll get back into the action faster!
I suppose but with all the lag it really did not seem to matter from my experiences.
