View Full Version : Petition for Monument
I know these things don't usually get much traction, but I think in the very least we need a monument to Gary Gygax in game. Add him to the Founders Fountain if nothing else, as Lord Gary Gygax, if not get an actual statue for him. Have the inscription indicate he was "lost in the devil invasion" if you wish that we are experiencing now with the anniversary.
But the man should be honored in some form by DDO.
/Signed
I like the statue. Lost "during" would be more appropriate and ambiguous.

perhaps a monument in Delera's graveyard where he "DMs" the quest chain.

I agree that the monument should be out in Delera's Graveyard, near the entracne to the quests that bear his voice. And I really like the touch "Lost during the Devil's Invasion"

On the rolling hills of those great plains of adventure we look upon the image of the greatest adventurer of all. As he rides his steed into the sunset we weep, and feel sorrow. However upon the end of a life the telling of deeds and heroic actions are told at many firelit taverns, campfires, and fireplaces of those who knew of adventure and of glory. Those happy few will speak his name softly and with reverence for they too are like him, an adventurer.
My heart is heavy today, for I was only enlighten to the world that he created in November 2005. However I am lifted with joy to know that this world will always live on.

Agreed. I would not like it to be related to some invasion which will be forgotten. I would also like it outside of Delera's so that someone who is not running Delera's can find it and if unknowing, ask "Who was Gary Gygax?"
The man definitely affected my life. Can't imagine who I would be without D&D during those critical teenage years. Made good friends, had great times and learned to dream. May you rest in peace. My condolences to your family. You will be missed.

I think a 'proper' funeral service\event in DDO would be appropriate. Complete with Turbine pall bearers & appropriate speeches by those who knew him best. Maybe observe a moment of silence as well as the ability leave offerings. Maybe Kargon could leave one his prized hams, for instance, at Mr. Gygax's monument. Maybe it should be someplace 'brighter' than Delera's yard though. I'm not much of a role player, but like many of you, I think he deserves as much respect as we could give him in DDO.
R.I.P. - Gary and thank you.

I think we should have 2 memorials, I like the idea that someone had about a "statue with him holding
a first edition DM guide" at the entrance of delera's.
The second monument I believe should replace the market place tent (since it is the heart of DDO).
I'd go with the suggestion made earlier about an eternal flame. I think that would fit quite nicely.

Mr Gygax deserves no less than an honorable mention at his passing in a permanent fashion in a game he is more than responsible for creating. I feel a large monument at the entrance to Delara's Graveyard should be given the utmost priority and be considered MANDATORY by the powers that be.
I believe anything less may incite riotous behavior.

yes a memorial would be nice.. it was mentiooned a while ago in the forums, i believe it was the khyber forum.. there was a lot of good ideas for one and a ton of peps that would like one.. so gary will truely be missed and the game should have some kind of remembrance of him as a creator of the game in the game for all of us to see... and other fallen hero's of the game...so devs please consider it and look at the old forum with the ideas..

I feel that this would be a great idea. A way to honor him and his dreams. Plus as an added idea, some people where wanting a shrine in the Marketplace for this event and for future events. Make his statue a rez. shrine. So even though he is gone, he can keep bring us back to be part of his vision.
Just a thought.

Add another /Signed.
I think that if it's doable, to have his own words adorn the monument, "I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else."
Seems only right.

It would be really cool for a monument of Gygax. He will be sorely missed :(

This would be a great tribute to the man who shared the amazing gift of D&D (and so much more...) with us all.

Mr. Gygax was largely responsible for the hobby that I grew up with and love. I have many fond memories sitting around the dining room table gaming with friends. All I can say is thank you and my prayers are with his friends and family.
Thank you.

I like the ideal of the Petition but I think it should be placed somewhere where everyone can see on a daily basis and not have to run to Delera's to see it and by all means I give my signature to it!

A colossus of sorts. Visible from nearly every location. Huge. Still smaller than the worlds he gave to us.

I vote that not only a memorial is placed in Delera's graveyard, but that the next Module includes a new quest line in the graveyard based on one of Gary's adventures (Dev's choice).
Mr Gygax has allowed the imaginations and creative spark of many people, young and old, to grow and thrive. May his visions and dreams be carried in the hearts and minds of all who partake in the worlds of his creation.

Deleras would be a good place or do something with the empty level in Catacombs. Maybe a biography and artwork. :(
