Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi X-treme Gamer
OS: XP Professional
I got a new computer a couple of months ago. It arrived with various issues, and I had a sound card replacement among them.
In both the original, and current sound card I experienced random crashes in DDO. Sometimes it would be days between crashes, and sometimes minutes. Sometimes it would be doing an intense battle, and sometimes not. It always happened when the sound was replaced by a high pitch squeal, but the video content was undisturbed.
I have tried all kinds of forums, and searched here in DDO for a clue as to what the problem might be, but the only thing close to my issue was complaints about this kind of sound card crashing in WoW.
I have tried troubleshooting with the manufacturer to no avail so far. Everything from swaping PCI slots, to reinstalling drivers. Currently I am using on-board sound, and so far it has been working well with maybe 10 FPS loss of performance. Still, I wonder if any solutions are out there for using a sound card.
Hey Rickpa,
for what its worth, a similar thing happens to me from time to time. Except I lose picture also. A high pitched squeal, which is always fun with headphones, and the screen goes black forcing a hard reboot. There doesnt seem to be any consistency to the crash, and no logs are generated. I'm pretty certain its the soundcard/drivers but cant for the life of me figure out how to fix it. Drivers are updarted and I'm not getting a new soundcard because one game crashes. I would be curious if you find anything out. i.e. you're not alone ;)
btw, i have an older soundblaster audigy2 platinum.

My video is two NVIDIA 8600s SLI. I am lucky to still have strong video when it crashed. I was also puzzled by the fact that there were no crash reports or logs to be found.

It would help if you could tell us what you've tried thus far. Have you tried reinstalling the game? Do you have the latest video and sound drivers? When you replaced your sound card did you remove the old drivers before installing the new ones?
Can you generate a DXDiag while the card is installed and post it here? I would love to take a look.

No crash logs at all!
Installed the drivers on the disk, installed the latest drivers from Creative, uninstalled Creative bloat ware, played with the startup queue looking for conflicts, and swapped PCI slots. I never thought to reinstall DDO.
It is possible that I have a second bad sound card. When tech support for Velocity Micro had control of the computer Saturday, upon driver reinstallation, Windows no longer recognized that I had a sound card. That's why I am now enjoying on-board sound.
Speaking of on-board sound. I am amazed how it sounds no different than a SB X-Fi Xtreme Gamer card! If I wasn't keeping track of my frame rate with Ctrl F, I wouldn't notice any performance difference at all.... except for not losing my sound.

I have an older Audigy card. My card works great with everything but DDO. This PC isn't my primary computer so I generally don't use it. I've updated the drivers (while uninstalling the old drivers), Uninstalled/Reinstalled DDO client with no luck. I'm playing DDO and randomly get crashes with High pitched squealing (system totally locks up). Have to preform hard shut down of system. It is interesting to me to note that this trouble isn't just within the Audigy line of Soundblaster cards.

Please don't bump month old posts as they are likely not the same problem. If you use an audigy please try getting this update... http://developer.creative.com/articles/article.asp?cat=1&sbcat=31&top=38&aid=46
if that does not help please post a full dxdiag and what sound mode your card is set to ingame (you should have it in software for testing purposes)

I have been on onboard sound since my last posting. It's much better than Sound Blaster!
