Sul 2nd day Therendor 3:48 in the afternoon MACSDF Entry 1
The sun has come up and moved past midday, but the clouds block out the light so much I have not noticed the change. I feel as if I have been awake for 5 days. I finally get a moment to recount these evenings’ activities. I am tired and exhausted, but more is to come I am sure; anything for the defense of my fair city. The following I write here incase no one should survive, that someone will know that good people of Stormreach fought and some will surely die before this is over…..here goes:
A typical evening in the Phoenix Tavern for the Mature Adventure’s Club….. Kinkaide(AKA Woodspider) was busy using flash paper to impress some serving wench with his “magic”; Zaniith was busy sulking in the corner after loosing his 5th straight roll of dice to me. Ceco had passed out; he really can not hold his ale you know. Anstrum and various other MACsters were singing and dancing to “Come Sail Away, the Dwarven remix” in the tavern brawl area The (in)famous Dane was trying to negotiate with a woman of negotiable affections…..over all a pretty normal, if not serine Sar night.
The tavern door burst open and Dktr comes charging through with a chill, scents of fire and smoke surrounding him. “Bar Keep!! Me needs Dwarven spirits make it a double EXTRA tall….Be quick about it!” Dktr slammed home his “medication” as the rest of MAC gathered about him, in query. Dktr a devote cleric who rarely has a libation downing a DOUBLE had us all concerned….
“Shavarth comes!” Dktr exclaimed loudly, so loud other patrons begin to circle about our (not so)merry band. At Dktr’s exclamation Dane was finally aware of something besides his negotiating and looks up. “Shavarath!?!” Dane exclaimed. “We just killed that pit fiend guy last night before we all got pudding. What is Shavarath doing back?” Without a word the newly formed (As in 30 seconds old) MAC: Stormreach Defense Force put on their air raid styled helmets and went out to work….
Between the Market tent and House Deneith a vile portal of Shavarth spawned. As MACSDF gathered about, the conversation turned grim. The red swirling portal of doom loomed right before us! As our guild leader Featherstone came upon the portal he exclaimed, “The market neighborhood has certainly gotten bad of late….homeless shifty derelicts hanging about, but this certainly takes the Djinn cake!” Some other onlookers looked at Dane in his full Bardish regalia: “Who are you?” “It doesn’t take a Kalashtar to know that I am General Dane Mcardy of the MACSDF; at your service”, Dane answered with an overly flamboyant bow. General Dane turned to the assembled masses and barked the following orders: “Take up positions on the rooftops. You two go scout about the city for more portals, and will you, yea you in the tall hat, go splash Ceco with some water and wake that drunk up! I swear Astargras get some **** clothes. No one wants to see a male nekkid dwarf! Hey you! Yes you kid. Go get me some pudding, AND WILL SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF THIS BRIGADINE CLASHES WITH MY EYE COLOR!”
A tense 5 minutes ensued where Kinkaide mentioned he may have wet himself…..Out spawns one, two and THREE spawns of Shavarath. One, Two, and Three they all fall….
We spent the rest of the night on guard duty. Since the first spawn the Devils have hit us twice more……Once at 9 this morning and once again at 1 this afternoon. The citizens of Stormreach have poured into the market in support. We can hold one portal. Can we hold all the portals off? This night will surely test us. The sky darkens and with it so does my soul…I feel it coming….
Sul 2nd day Therendor 5:30 in the evening Entry 2
The Devils just hit Stormreach again, this time they attempted to kill Recurve our trusted Ranger trainer. MACSDF was on hand to end the devils existence, but not before we captured them and questioned them……we got no new info from them but we did parade our prisoners about the city for people to throw old fruit and vegetables at them. General Dane McArdy did receive a minor wound to his right pinkie finger. He was treated by the healers of House Jorasco and is expected to make a full recovery. We are stressed but we are holding the line....hope I see morning.
Sul 2nd day Therendor 9:25 in the evening Entry 3
The latest of Devil scouts of Shavarath entered the city near the Spirit Gate. This time MACSDF quickly captured said devil scouting party and paraded our POW’s about the market, in an effort to show the people that the danger is very real. Coinlords and their puppet spokespersons can not deny the evidence that we provided this eve… all is not well in the city. I hope our efforts help show them all the threat is real!
The parade of prisoner’s turned quite hostile as more and more of the citizens of Stormreach came to the realization that we are really in dire circumstances. I only hope that the 12 can provide answers…..
The citizens of Stormreach demanded blood and the MACSDF turned over the captives to the angry riotous mob, right before the gates of the harbor. Bellwether Bill survived the assault, thankfully. The unruly mob in its lust for blood decapitated MACSDF member Private Loke. House Jorasco healers are now working to fix him up, but seem to be shy thread and needles…..our prayers go with our fallen hero. As the evening goes on I pray that the people of Stormreach unite together, but if the last mob was any indication, this invasion may reveal the dark side in all of us. Will we survive this evening…..
Sul 2nd day Therendor 9:47 evening Entry 4
Vehee F'nord of the 12 brought into existence his tower from the Twelve above the Market area. There was a short fight with more devils who were quickly dispatched. Vehee had nothing really to say but he needs more study of the runes. Go figure! We need action not book learning..... Sergent Dolphina of the MACSDF was first to reach the tower and received for his efforts 300 Tasty hams, 2 internal Titan wands, and a Syberys scepter (+1 umd). More spawns ....bats everywhere...devils.....orat...................... ...../gasp the fight is upon us! rise Stormreach rise and fight! MACSDF to arms!!!
"Vorpalllllllll !!!11!!!11", General Dane McArdy squeals as he dispatches another devil.
Sul 2nd day Therendor 11:28 late evening Entry 5
We have been battling the Devils nonstop since the tower of the twelve has appeared......I have been wounded during tonight's action and have been carried to House Jorasco to be put on the mend. I am amazed at the healers here. I hear the sound of battle waining in the market. Cheers are erupting off in the distance. Sounds like the people of Stormreach have carried the day.
The hordes seem to be growing in hostility and number. Wave after endless wave. Each time we beat them back, but each time another hero falls....Supplies and troops will be needed before this is over. Sleep well Stormreach we will need you all again when the Devil's invade.
Mol 3rd day Therendor 1:15 early morning Entry 6 Submiting MACSDF member: Secretary of Stormreach Defense Zaniith aka cyc0tic
With most of the day watch in their bunks the more skillful and stealthy group took over the watch. After combing over the new tower and magical path leading there we took to the streets on guard. All seemed quiet after the last attacks until the alarm went up around 1 in the morning. Our members were few at this early hour but we banded together and fought off yet another incursion. The ranger Ghaldar, the rogue Drever, and the cleric Teradawn engaged 4 devils that spawned out of a portal on a city street. 3 devils were quickly paralyzed and dispatched. The 4th one teleported away and had to be tracked down and dealt with. After the threat was over a quick survey showed no casualties or property damage.
Mol 3rd day Therendor 10:37 night Entry 7 City undersiege
There were sporadic reports of devils seen in Stormreach through out the day. The devils met their end, dispatched by the city militia. “The militia has it uses.” General McArdy has been telling us over and over……finally they do something more than shine the good General’s armor.
As has become almost a custom for the MACSDF, we gathered around our new penthouse. Much discussion, with very little answers…….the swirling sky opened up a HUGE portal. Something like I have only wished upon my neighbors appeared. The stench, the sounds of coming battle, the absolute horror. Devils attacked this eve like the previous day. This time it was not scouting parties but organized skirmishers. They attacked in larger numbers with better coordination then last night. Elements of the elite shock troops led scouting forces and harassed our supply lines near the auction house. They pressed the attack, many fell, and the militia folded and bid a retreat all about us. Secretary of Stormreach Defense Zaniith called for a strategic withdraw to the area around the Phoenix Tavern. “Run away!!!” Was the order as minstrels sang “Brave Sir Bowvine ran away ran away Brave! Brave! Brave! Sir Bowvine…..”
Ribcrusher lay incapacitated on the bridge as we crossed towards the bank. We had elements of the devil forward patrols in front of us. We cut through them just in time to face the forces pursuing us. The devils pressed their advantage and caught our forces right as we reached the market bank. Caught in the open many a MACSDF fell on the bridge. The devils teleported in and struck first our clerics and healers as they where positioned in the rear with the gear, leaving many others to be cut down with no chance of healing touch to save them. Smart move on their part, yet another example of more organized tactics. Fresh troops arrived in mass from all over Stormreach. Many brave guilds joined with us in our defense efforts. We continued the fight as we backed into the Phoenix tavern where we made our last stand. We carried the night, but the cost was very high. MACSDF reports casualties as follows:
Dead or mostly dead:
Ghaldar, Dane, Zaniith, Dktr, Drkill, Rachh, Kinkaide, RoboGoat, Mordaki, Bowvine, Keybosh,
Wounded:
Kallygar, Sherridan, Featherstone, Dregmor
Still nekkid:
Astargras
Still Singing Sail Away, Sail Away, Dwarven remix:
Anstrum
House Jorasco healers have been able to raise all that had died, as well as healed those who were wounded. Astargras still has no shield. His last one being eaten due to his shield bashing of rust monsters, in Rainbow.
Marquise de Kinkaide has discovered through his magical training that the new elite devil shock troops are immune to charm effect spells and such. Be warned casters.
Tonight, we fought them off. We saved Stormreach for one more day. We must unite as a city or we shall succumb to this invasion.
Zol 4th Day of Therendor 12:01 Midday Entry 8
Food stores are beginning to become depleted. Shipments from outlying areas have ceased to arrive. What ever Coin Lords and city government bureaucrats that still infest the city have imposed higher taxes and demand bribes to gain access to food stores. Those rats have even used the city militia to “liberate” all food stores for, in their words, “the people”. The stink of their corruption seems to feed the massive whirlpool of hate that hovers above our fair city. They will bleed this city dry of coin and hop the last ship from the harbor, mark my words.
We have settled into a pretty regular routine. Fight sporadic devil incursions throughout the day. Calm civil unrest between battles. Some pray for intervention, others seek the comforts only a bottle of House Ghallanda Private Reserve YK 899 can provide. You got to say one thing about the Coin Lords. They do have an excellent taste in vintages. MACSDF scroungers have come across some “not so” guarded warehouses of some minor Coin Lords. Food “donated” from these stores has helped feed some people. The dragon marked houses, having there own methods for survival, have donated what they can to help the general populous of the market. Over all, everyone is tightening their belts and plowing forward. Pudding supplies are dangerously low.
Zol 4th day of Therendor 10:52 Night Entry 9
General Dane and his aides de comp gathered atop the penthouse for a view of the battle field. While elements of the 83rd, 245th and 1st brigades stood fast behind a barricade wall near the market bank bridge. No matter how hard the clean up battalion worked on the white marble of the bridge, they just could not get the stains and remnants of gore removed from the previous nights slaughter. The feeling of dread crept through the market. The sounds of battle could be heard emanating from the portal above us. Not a soul dared breathe as the time drew closer to the known attack.
Featherstone’s Longstriders where dispatched throughout the market as a recon force. This platoon sized element was made up of rangers and our sneakiest rogues. Minute after dreadfull minute passed….nothing. Nurse Rachh spoke a little too loudly: “Well they chickened out, those wimps!” His comments spread across the market like fire. The market erupted in cheering and many taunted the portal…….
A signal arrow flew up over the market tent, signifying danger. The cheers and taunts turned to gasps….the devils did not come back this eve, but they did torture the city. The portal loomed back at us and grew in size, strong forces began to uptake anything light weight into the portal, first some leaves, then a bird, and finally the whole tent began to waiver. My poor dog, was sucked up into the air. I hope he prepares the Landing Zone in Shavarath…….we all going there soon it seems.
Every able body was dispatched through out the harbor and “acquisitioned” every piece of rigging that could be found. We even took the tie lines from the Harbor Master’s yacht, which promptly floated out into the harbor and ran aground near the light house. Pity, I enjoyed the yacht parties on his yacht whenever he was out of town.
The people of Stormreach worked feverishly to attach lines and tie down what we could all about the city. There were no battles fought this eve with blades, but somehow I think this was much worse. The troops and people are exhausted, pushed to the brink. Moral is so low….someone was quoted as saying “Moral?, what’s that?”. We are holding on by a string. No pun intended. I hope tomorrow brings good news, or at least a discovery of a hidden stash of pudding. The General will loose his mind, well what is left of it, if he does not get his daily pudding.

Sporadic attacks through out the morning and late night. We are holding but losing the numbers as the days go on. Good news to report. Finally!
Like an angelic vision of battle she strode forward. Proud, blood stains across her fine white scaled armor. Her dark skin denoted that she was a Drow. She wore dirt and grime from combat as makeup. Scents of smoke instead perfume….yes she would be beautiful made up….. She saluted the general as she made her approach and shouted over the gusting wind:
"General Dane. My name is Terrah Rican of the Drow clan Shadow Warriors. I stand in representation of the Keepers of the Arcane. We stand ready if you need us. I heard of your battles at the defense of the Thronehold gates during the last war. It is good to see that your finally stepping forward. I was beggining to think maybe Coyle would be the one to try to lead these rabble rashers around. I saw your army guarding the bank steps here. I'm sorry I wasn't able to come sooner. I was caught on the north wall near house Denieth with my Keepers and a few good warriors who happened to help us. It was only a few yards up to the bank but it might as well have been 10 miles for all the time it took me to walk here fending off devil invaders as I came. I know I've not been officially sworn as an officer but I do what I can. I’ve been working with House Denieth and they give us food supplies and more arrows but they are running short. I don’t think the city was prepared as well as they could but we'll manage. Don't worry about that side of the city. We will protect house Jorasco and keep the healers coming. We will hold there to the last man if we have to, and it won’t fall if I can help it. I'll have my scout Sawl doing some scouting for you. You can use him if you like, he's fast for a dwarf and he fears no blade that I know. He can run orders across the entire span of this market if you need him to. Our ranger Snowwolf is a capable soul, he's organized a band of other rangers into sniper teams along the tops of the buildings. Here is my report. We lost 5 so far but recovered them thanks to House Jorasco but it won’t be long before their powers wane."
General McArdy nodded in approval as he read the parchment. “You have done well. Would you like to have a seat? Care for something water, wine, pudding?” With a shake of her head she proclaimed “No time for such pleasantries, after this you can buy me a drink.” With a nod the general responded, “I know, I try to keep some of the formalities….not only for good manners, but for some since of normality.” With a grim look the general made the following requests: “Please send Sawl to the signal corps, so that he may be integrated into the signal system and codes. He will act as our communication. Snowolf’s Snipers can fill an immediate need.” General McArdy motioned for Terrah to look at the map of the market and pointed “Here along this wall near the Spirit Gate. Beguile’s Daggers and Keybosh’s Backstabbers took heavy losses this morn, could Snowwolf reinforce there along this line to the Auctioneer.” With a nod and a smile Terrah dispatched runners carrying the orders.
Terrah’s face creased and battle worn still held us all captive. She spoke, "I've spoken with Veheer, it’s clear the Twelve will try to aid us but I am almost certain we are on our own in this fight. Although this evening looks quiet I am sure its only a lull before the next wave. As I said general, the north end will not fall. I dont have to tell you that we must hold this invasion here. If this city falls there's nothing to stop them from jumping across the ocean to Khorvaire. I'll be off General. Good luck."
With a salute and a wave the two leaders parted company.
She will hold the North flank…..we have to believe she and her Keepers will.
General McArdy turned to a runner and received our second batch of good news for the day. He read out loud the message:
To: General McArdy MACSDF
From: Legends of Twilight
"Legends of Twilight" has organized a small "fire team" each night to assist with repelling the invaders. Although a small contingent, it packs much firepower. Several devils and orthons have fallen to our blades and magic. We were not without casualties, as all team members were wounded (some gravely). Legends of Twilight fights and will provided support as needed. We will continue to deploy until the threat is gone.
Team members include: Sir Tryck Turner, Paladin; Triple Threat Magic Missiles: Aunt Flo, Idrees, Jubalee; Multi talented Denethyn, and our “Monster of Metal” Ska, battle bard.
"This is great news." the General proclaimed and with that he retired for his afternoon pudding.

Portal spawns occurred somewhat irregularly through out the day into the evening. Sometimes two portals at once. Our weary forces rose to the challenge each time. The troops did quite handling the increased attacks and portal openings.
Mid day we received a communiqué from the Storm Reach Thieves Guild. Sir Sertrynus, Palidin of Stormreach galloped into our base camp on his steed. Porters rushed to his mounts side and began tending it, right as Sir Sertrynus dismounted. “I am Sir Sertrynus , and you are?” I replied “Chief Petme Officer Ghaldar Guatama, how may I be of service.” Sir Sertrynus answered, “ I have a communiqué for your General.” With that I showed Sir Sertrynus to the General’s command center.
“This is great news Sir Sertrynus! Please thank your leader Arj for me.” Where may we be of service in the defense of Stormreach.?” Answered the Paladin. “Kind Sir, we have a couple matters you can be of assistance. First off, the entrances to and from the stem tunnels as well as MACSDF's southern flank have been hit very hard by the Quickfeet. If the SRTG(Stormreach Thieves Guild) could help secure our flank, and dissuade the lesser thieves and get them to stop profiteering from the people’s hardship….” Sir Sertrynus nodded in agreement. “We shall use our power amongst the thieves’ guilds to handle this for you.” With a flick of his wrist the General dismissed me from the conference the last thing I heard after leaving….”Sir, could you ask Arj if he would not mind having some of your information gathers look into Ve……” The door shut, leaving me to wonder what the general is up too.
As night fell, the Devil hordes poured into our lines we fought three waves of shock troops and lessor recon units. Mixed units of bearded devils, bats, and the big “O’s” as we call them came at us. SRTG held our southern flank and recorded some nice kill counts. Terrah Rican and her Keepers held fast to our north. True to her word, they fought well. Legends of Twilight strike team moved from all three positions adding backup where it was required. In the end we killed enough devils to think we had won a great victory. Sad we became when the force barrier went up. Sealing the market from further incursions. The tent is now lost. It is in devil hands now. Shavarath has its landing zone.
After the battle I was summoned to the general’s command center with others who make up his staff. When we all arrived the general proclaimed “I have new information provided to me by my TOP SECRET agents.” I asked, “Agents? Secret agents?” The general smiled at us and revealed the following, “It has come to my attention that the guild “ l337 Sauce” (editor’s note: this is a fictional guild name, any resemblance to an actual guild is completely unintentional and an coincidence.) has been looting every devil we slay. They are in league with the Coin Lords. They blend into militia units and hop about snatching everything they can then fade back into the rat holes from which they sprang. They have been marked by my agents…..” The general let us take all that in “Further more I am unsure of the loyalties of Vehee F’nord. Information will be forthcoming on a need to know basis. For right now please go about your business as normal. Briefing over. DISMISSED!” With a salute we all left the command post bewildered.

Typical day as far as portal closing and small devil fights. As more guilds and such join the fight, the General has become very busy…so busy he forgot to eat his pudding at midday meal. I am concerned for the boss man. Various reports have filtered in all morning with, the following note worthy points: Various sources have reported the Veheer may not be the salvation we all thought it was some days ago. The scuttle butt around camp is that other guild leaders as well as some of MACSDF command may have information linking Veheer to the devil onslaught. Some say he maybe more than meets the eyes, a devil in disguise, very deceptive in nature. Marquis de Kinkaide has also offered information that links the missing Sir Lawrence to the summoning runes. He maybe at fault for them…..In other news Leader of the Band Anstrum has asked for and got music devices that have been set up around the ectoplasm force field. He is conducting psychological warfare blaring the General’s (not so)greatest hits at the devils who now patrol the inside of the barrier. The devils seem unimpressed, but the music has driven off all the beggars worshiping the barrier. “Viggio the destroyer is coming…” was getting quite old.
MACSDF has identified a new tactic to maximize kill counts on the vile devils. It has been observed that small “fire teams” Do better to attract devil spawns. This amplifies the number we can draw into our plane and resulting in more kills. Large formations and troop concentrations have proved ineffective. We will be forming small bands of fighting groups and deploying them too critical points. Each team will be responsible for a kill box. Each kill box can be viewed by no less than 3 other kill boxes. So in theory devil spawns in box 2, teams in boxes 1, 3, and 4 can respond after the initial spawns hit. This information has been passed on to SRTG, Keepers, and Legends. I have one reservation about this new tactic. Looking about our junior officers I saw a bunch of young, bright eyed mama’s boys and daddy’s lil’ girls. They fought bravely and well when they had the command structure and someone by their sides. How can the handle it in teams of 4-6. Other tactics have proved less usefull. MACSDF has lost several young magi who thought they could drop Djinn cake bombs into the market tent via failed teleports......when you fail teleports often your casting is suspect....seemed they failed there featherfall spells too. Can not fault them for trying to something new.
I had an interesting conversation with an old friend today over some cold rations. Eliminster and I were reminiscing about the old days when we were privates fighting in the city militia. Those were the days when men were men and us men were afraid of wifeaggro!! The water works were under siege by INVADERS! And we did our best to fight them off. We remembered our old drill instructor, Babbydaddy. That crusty old warforge took our youngling butts down into those tunnels…. I think we lasted 12.3 tics before we got carted off to the healing chest. As we laughed and talked of the old days an idea began to creep in. “We need Drill sergeant Babbydaddy here to get these younglings whipped whip it good, go foreword….I mean whipped into shape.” Eli jumped upped “your right! Where is he at right now”. I replied “I have no BLEEP’n idea.” With that I went running off whistling a tune from some bards in cone hats….
In the last Lootapoloza BD(Babbydaddy) became disabled at 0 HP at the sight of the +1 Vorpal Greataxe he pulled. When he saw it was Race required Kobold he let the Melf’s acid arrow take him to 0. Not sure why he did that….maybe in utter disgust, that he would have to change religion and start saying things like YARK! YARK! I found him standing in Hazidill’s Shipping serving as a coat rack. I noticed another long lost MAC warforged named Grunk. He to, sat in stasis. Most likely hiding out from his forge brother who has been seeking his destruction……another story for another time.
Anyway, times like these call for drastic measures. I got some of smugglers to sell me the two warforged and then had to pay them extra for them to load the wagon. I was heading back to the market and the MACSDF artificers when I was waylaid by a group Quikfeet. “The coinlords seek anything of worth….consider yourself taxed and hand over those warforged.” I had to think quickly. Drawing on my MACSDF training I employed an old favorite “These are not the warforge you seek.” I spoke as I waved my hand in front of the highwayman and raised my eyebrows this way and that. He spoke to his companions “These are not the warforge we are looking for.” I continued “Be on your way.” The rogue repeated “Be on your way.” and I was through the check point and into the market. Tomorrow the kiddies get some old fashion training from BD. Marching in the snow up hill both ways stuff. I can’t wait.

Some days have passed from the shattering loss of the Market Tent. Blasts of energy have rained down and we are left with a crater…..or “pudding Bowl” if you are the general. Stormreach is still a city under siege as portals continue to open and Devil’s spawn. MACSDF is ever on station to fight these battles.
The last few days have been busy. We have had to house many a refugee, quieting rumors of lack of ale, as well as distributing ham. The Coinlords have lost power in Stormreach. Their main source of income being the taxes on trade from the market place is now gone. The harbor master has exerted himself again and has once again closed the gates to the harbor, access only by coin or deed. In the wake of all these economic issues, the twelve have conveniently opened trade up with the rest of the wards of the city. Combine this with their proximity to trade routes with the City of Merida has put them in a very advantageous position……how so convenient. Money the cause of so much suffering…yet again!
The night the barrier was to drop MACSDF deployed no less than three regiments, and in addition two platoon size detachments. 1st Regimental CO Ribcrusher was charged with protecting the innocent. He took his orders; with a salute he issued the following vow “Yes General. We will gather and protect all the virgin’s…..not a devil will get one….if the cause is lost we will not leave a single one!” Interesting fellow Moral officer Ribcrusher can be…. 2nd Regiment Sherridan’s Sherris (yea they have an interesting regimental flag) deployed to the bank bridge to support elements of the SRTG. Mechanic 1st class Tinned commanded two platoons and roamed the market as skirmishers and scouts. General Dane McArdy commanded MACSDF Strike Force Alpha Beta Bits. Alpha Bits deployed to the Broken Pillar Bridge north of the tent (The “Broken Pillar Lounge” is the ancestral meeting spot of the MAC. Our honor guard fought day in night through out this invasion to protect this hollowed ground. ) and ready itself for the charge into Shavarath.
Lieutenants of Shavarath spawned outside of house Jorasco, the fighting was dagger close. Much blood was spilt in those moments. Veheer called for us and we had a fighting withdraw to our sacred place next to the pillar. The lights began to circle around the market…….beams from the heavens….the explosions….the death…the burned pudding!
We fought the rest of the devils off and quickly began clearing what was left from the streets. The Stormreach guard house on the south side of the market had three portals open inside. Most of the militia contained inside the house met their maker. We deployed in platoon sized formations and took turns fighting the devils until the portals were closed. Elite was the order of the day.
What we witnessed was horrific, one and then two blasts of energy destroyed the market and left hundred dead and dying. What follows are eye witness accounts of the reports given to the General post facto:
Account of Riordin and Sherridan’s Sherri’s:
Riordin returned to the command area and salutes General McArty. The Paladin's armor is heavily splattered with the blood of devils, but even the blood cannot cover the dirt and grime from the destruction that occurred in the Marketplace.
"I reported to Commander Sherridan as you instructed, General. Our group engaged two lieutentants of Shavarath, a fire elemental and some kind of infernal trog. With the rest of the defenders of the city, we managed to overwhelm and slay both of those creatures."
Riordin looks back over his shoulder at the Marketplace, "We all know what happened next. After the explosion, Commander Sherridan led us to the barracks. Upon realizing that we had to split our forces, the Commander had me lead a group into the barracks, where the fighting against the devils when one for quite some time. You could hear the fighting all over the barracks, it was impossible to tell how many groups of defenders were engaged with the enemy. Then, almost unexpectedly, the battle ended. The portals in the barracks remained active, but no more forces were using them."
"We retired from the barracks, and then split up to see where we could help in the city. I came across Nat Gunn, the street performer, and tended his injuries. However, I fear the wound to his leg maybe infernal in origin. The injury was unaffected by my healing spells, as well as my Lay On Hands. A healing potion was ineffective as well. Using materials from my healing kit, I cast a bless spell directly on the bandages and then bound up Nat's leg. I assisted him to the Temple of the Sovereign Host and informed the clerics there of Nat's injuries."
"After I rest a moment, and clean some of this blood and grime from myself, I will return to the Marketplace to see if there is anything else that can be done for the wounded. I am curious though. I don't think the Twelve would intentionally cause a magical backlash like this. But, looking at the situation tactically, and hearing the fears of others about Vaneer F'nord. Perhaps Shavarath's forces did not strike the city earlier, because it was the Twelve that put the barrier up around the Tent. That barrier kept the devils 'in' as much as it kept us 'out'. And perhaps, in order to prevent the devils from overwhelming us all, the Twelve caused the magical backlash that destroyed the Bazaar Tent, but also collapsed the portal to Shavarath's home plane. I know the Twelve are blaming everything on the devils, but this whole series of events, as unfortunate as they are, may have been a necessary sacrifice. We have our right to demand evidence from the Twelve, but the outright accusations of members of the Twelve being traitors, cannot be allowed to devolve into Mob Rule."
"Please, General, let me know if there is anything else I can do to assist the MACSDF. For I fear that, with my guild gone, my search for any of my friends that had lived here over a year ago, will be in vain."
We are also fortunate to have the following account from Terrah and the Keeper’s of the Arcane Elite Guard:
A stretcher carrying a battered and bloodied female drow is walked up the steps to the General. Terrah’s white armor is torn in two, along her head is a large gash and her arm has so many cuts it is impossible to count them. Yet her chest moves up and down signifiying that she lives.
One of the carriers is a large red armored Warforged named Ranok. He lets down the stretcher and walks forward.
"General I am Ranok, second in command of the Keepers of the Arcane elite guard. She asked me to bring her here before taking her to the healers against my better wishes." The general looks back with a questioning gaze.
"It was terrible General Dane. We took a massive hit from the first wave but Terrah was commanding the troops and the city guard with excellent precision. Then out of a portal a large creature appeared, it was the Lag monster. It took her before we could react and struck her down, she battled bravely but alas she fell, we fought the monster off as it was obviously some assassin sent by the devilish forces. Yet the fight had to go on, so I settled the line and pushed the devils away from the north end. By the time the Barrier began to rise we had suppressed them away. The devils will no longer bother that end of the city, ever again. We aided in chasing them into the Barracks and are organizing a strike team to defeat them as we speak."
"We lost many in the fight. The Keepers lost two. General, Sawl is dead. He died the final death being disintegrated by one of the devils magic while running communications across the streets. He cannot be raised. We are cleaning up the north end and burning the devilish corpses. Terrah is stabilized for now but I will take our officer to House J."
A haggard and scratchy voice speaks from the stretcher.
"N..oo..o" Terrah spoke through raspy breaths.
She then stood up on her hands. One of the keepers came to her side but she shoved him away. With effort that caused her to grit her teeth hard she stood, swaying with pain but she still stood. Finally the twitching stopped as she stood tall, firm, and upright. Then shot her hand out and stood at attention with a salute. Her eyes wavered as she then spoke with the sound of a voice that sounded like crackling paper mixed with gurgling water.
"GGGENERAL, Daane. The Nnn...North End is sssecure, all hhands annd gates are sssound. By yyyour commmand we did not fall!"
She then lowered her hand and waited for the General to return the salute which he did quickly. Then Terrah collapsed to the floor in a heap.
Ranok ran to her side and lifted her back into the stretcher.
"Fear not General, she'll be all right. The **** fool wanted to come and give her last orders before being healed. By your leave General we shall be off. The portal gone, the tent obliterated, many lives lost. The war is over...for now."
The warforged saluted and then disappeared into the streets.
In the darkest corner of the darkest ally in Stormreach two red devilish eyes pear through the marketplace. A voice whispers on the wind audible to only a few who pass it off as nothing. The sound drifts across the generals ears as well as many others around him.
"It’s never over..."
How we feed the people now: By dakkon75 and Ghaldar
A definite food shortage has resulted in many a person tightening their belt. Luckily we had an interesting visitor today that ended our food and supply issues.
I was getting to know my ale mug and chair in the Phoenix Tavern, when with a flash of light and poof a rather frumpy looking man materialized into the tavern.
"I came here to speak to the General" he says. So I take him to the overlord of all things bardish….
"I am Drazell d'Orien of House d'Orien, Leader of the Khyberian Ham Authority and Purveyer of Pork Stormreach Chapter." I am truly sorry about my timing general but in these times with the sporadic portal activity even those of us with the Mark of Passage have a little trouble navigating the arcane winds.
On behalf of the Khyberian Ham Authority, I hereby donate to the cause 5 cartloads of ham and other various foodstuffs. To you general I have 2 crates of the finest pudding this side of Sarlona. I wish we could have these supplies here sooner but we are not fighters and have only recently been able to teleport thru the storms.
My men are few but we can jump your troops around and pass out supplies as needed. I have a few contacts in the Lava Divers and they have pledged to help you where they can.
I will return soon with the supplies and wish you luck on your campaign.” With this news Dane let out a big WOOT. And there was much rejoicing…..
Stay vigilant Stormreach. The devils still attack and we still need to fight them…..remember the number of the counting shall be three, stretch and stay hydrated, and live life as I do….no tickling and no hand puppets.

Sul 3nd day Therendor 1:15 early morning Entry 6

I have been revived and my body is whole. Though I fear my descent into the underworld is hastened each time I pass over and return. I find that my lust for blood is growing and i fear the worst for my brethren. In time, you may need to dispatch the evil that grows within me.
The recent coming of shavarth is bending my soul towards that plane. Take heed MACSDF, I will resist the change as long as I can....

Keeper,
Veheer is the only person that is looking into this matter and working on solutions to put an end to it. While the rest of Stormreach officials are running around with their eyes closed saying “Oh nothing to see here” or “Its just lightning”. If you, like our good Sir choose to ignore this matter any longer, I and the rest of MACSDF (MAC Stormreach Defense Force) must ask for your resignation from any position or title of importance that you hold in the city. Your ignorance and sheer blind sight to the situation is putting the city and its citizens at great risk.

MACSDF Introduction
It has been brought to my attention that some adventures do not know exactly what MACSDF is. MACSDF stand for MAC (Mature Adventures Club) Stormreach Defense Force. MACSDF was started when we lost confidence in some of the Coin Lords, namely Sir Lawrence and Keeper. Strange occurrences began to happen around the city and they said it was nothing. Portals sights were spotted around the city and they said it was nothing. Portals sprung into existence and spawned devils in the city and they said it was nothing.
With all these occurrences happening and the Coin Lords denying them all we could sit idle no longer! So we took matters into our own hands to protect our city. Now MACSDF patrols the city’s market place trying to keep the devil incursions in check.
MACSDF is mostly made up of MAC members, but all able bodied adventures are welcome to aid out ranks. Remember strength in numbers. If you are interested in joining MACSDF just look for us where ever trouble arises. Now that MACSDF has been introduced we will shortly introduce some of it’s members.

Terrah walks up with blood stains across her fine white scaled armor. It is clear there has been little time to tend to her looks.
She salutes as the general approaches and shouts over the gusting wind.
Ive been working with House denieth and they give us food supplies and more arrows but they are running short. I dont think the city was prepared as well as they could but we'll manage. Don't worry about that side of the city. We will protect house Jurasco and keep the healers coming. We will hold there to the last man if we have to, and it wont fall if I can help it. We lost 5 so far but recovered them thanks to house J but it wont be long before their powers wane."
Hands over a well organized scroll.
"I've spoken with Veheer, its clear the Twelve will try to aid us but I am almost certain we are on our own in this fight. Although this evening looks quiet I am sure its only a lull before the next wave. As I said general, the north end will not fall. I dont have to tell you that we must hold this invasion here. If this city falls there's nothing to stop them from jumping across the ocean to Khorvaire. I'll be off General. Good luck."
Salutes.

Well I was going to post my specculation somewhere else, but reading Keeper just kinda makes me think is right.
This Devil invasion is The Twelves doing,
what got me thinking about this is what some of the ex-vendors, now-homeless were saying. What are the odds that the Devils would sneak in here and put up runes all over? Why were Devils not spotted prior to the Runes? Is it not more likely that the runes are part of some kind of summons? I believe the twelve (now bear in mind I really do not know much about Ebberron so I might be off a bit) kiddnapped +Sir, summoned the Portals & the Vortex in a power grab from the Coin Lords. Or some other similar conspiracy theory:)

Hvymetal,
Thank you for your interest in this key matter. Currently rumors and speculations are flying around rampant. We ask that citizens and adventures alike remain calm. MACSDF has its best agents investigating these rumors and are weeding out the odd ones so we can focus on the ones that might hold some truths.
When Veheer first appeared we cheered and thought The Twelve would aid us in crushing this devil threat. However this is not the case! Veheer has done nothing but procrastinate and asked for more and more time as the devils gain a foothold in the market place. I can not go in to much detail but I can tell you this, his named has crossed our war room table. That is all have for now.

* gotta love this thread. Its like a good ole fashion war movie.
The door flap opens and in walks a now even more haggered looking Drow fighter, her armor slightly chinked, with dust stains and what looks like a large hole in the side of her armor and her helmet gone, replaced by a large bandage around her head.
Terrah salutes the general.
"I apologize for my haggered apprearence general, I did not wish to waist resources to repair my scale armor or take time away from the healers to mend my head wound, just yet. It is still in good order and I am still strong. I have my mornings report and I am grateful to the gods that me and my force were able to see the morning." She plunks down the journal on the table.
"We took a heavy wave of enemies on the north end, we had to retreat to the gates of house denieth before we finally pushed them back. House Jurasco remains safe along with the healers. We lost many, mostly from the city guard who are fighting bravely beside us. But two heroes fell, Daomuck and Shiado. Their souls are being raised as we speak but it gets harder every day to do so. The tent as you know already is lost but.." She stutters in her words.
"Veheer's report is wrong, not all got out. I lost 10 men who stayed at their posts on the mooring lines trying to save the marketplace tent while the others ran. General, their screams of pain when the barrier rose is not something I wish to hear again. If the Twelve is correct and we have three days to prepare then I will do so by putting up barricades in the streets to stop the devils from running freely like they have. That may slow them down."
"I also have some concerns about something. Permission to speak freely general?"
"The devils struck at our weakest points along the line, when that happens I suspect they have scouted us or someone is feeding them information. What I tell you I would not repeat in open areas. I have reasons to not trust veheer. I've been in many battles across the 400 years I have lived and never has the battle been predicted so accurately as this man is telling us. Its almost too convenient. Also, during the fight a portal opened on the spire, it served to be a distraction since after I sent troops to fight there, the portal closed and the devils struck us on the south end. Before the portal opened I thought I saw Veheer wave his hand in that directiuon and Litz our wizard detected a shift in the planes coming from his direction. Something doesn't sit right with me on this but it only means we should be prepared and stop this threat on our own. I recomend fighting as is, but keeping one eye on him for now. So I rigged a little insurance policy for us. Our sniper snowwolf has an arrow locked in on him if he so much as flinches the wrong way."
"I have loitered too long General and kept you from your duties, I will return to my post and prepare for this nights raid if any come. Strength and Honor general."
She salutes, about faces and leaves out the the way she came.

While good in theory, I fear the barricades would only hinder anyone fighting the invasion, since the Orothons and Bearded Devils could just as easily teleport around them. Making it harder for friends to rally together.
No, keep the streets clear for now.
I too no longer turst Veheer. To long it's taken to decipher the runes, and yet, the merchants that were turned out before the first portal actually opened. How forsightful of them a week ago, and yet still they need to study? They are the most learned of the mages in Ebberron. Who is to say that they are keeping us busy fighting devils who use hit and run tactics, rather then a full out assult?
Is the barrier around the tent to protect us, or to stop us from entering and seeing what is going on? Notice how the tent is ringed with the most of these arcane sigils? As if they are using it to in fact bring the invading force in, as they prepare to launch a major assault on us.
I know, from my travels in the vale, and to Meridia, that some of the 12 have in fact been Tieflings in disguse, working against us.
This Veheer may well be the same.

The recent rumors about Veheer F’nord are very troubling indeed. If it does turn out he is a devil in disguise he is playing us like a bunch of fools. We all stand idle and watch the market place get tore apart bit by bit.
I have a more disconcerting possibility that has crossed my thoughts. If Veheer is truly an agent of The Twelve and for what ever nefarious reason The Twelve has turned on The Coin Lords, this could spell a swift demise for all of us. Or even worse, The Twelve could be in leagues with the devils.
If you recall The Twelve have established vendors throughout the city. These vendors take in and resell high end equipment we do not have a use for. I was just supplied a report brought to me by STG along with some of our rogues. The report shows that they have taken in far more items than they have resold over the past two years. With this quantity of gear they could equip legions or have enough platinum to fund such an invasion, or worse.
So as Secretary of Stormreach Defense I recommend trusting only those in the SDF. Be wary of The Coin Lords and The Twelve. Until we have more information we do not know who we can trust.

I heard the reports of your battles on the north wall, a valiant job! I also heard about your losses trying to save the market bazaar. We to lost members there trying to secure the tent, along with several citizens that were lending aid. They will be missed, but now it not the time to mourn them, that is exactly what these fiendish scum expect us to do. There will be time to mourn and remember after this matter has been resolved.
These devils are very intelligent indeed. They will strike at our weakest link. We are developing a new strategy to help combat their tactics. In the past we would mass together to fight in numbers, this has proven ineffective. They pass up the large groups and prey on a single person or small party. Our new battle plans call for the large group to be split up into small three or four man fire teams. These fire teams will disperse throughout the entire market. Then when the enemies show themselves the alarm signals go out and all the fire teams converge on the attackers. After the battle the fire teams return to their previous posts. We shall try this tactic tonight as see how it fairs. Also I will personally lead a fire team to reinforce your ranks on the north wall. That is all I have for now.

Marquise de Kinkaide report from the field.
This day I bring grave news from the research I have conducted in the market. It now seems that the invasion was accidently put in to motion by a very ignorant man. From my reasearch I have gathered that the coin Lords authorized a extra planar gate opening, Who did they let open this gate? SIR LAWERENCE! From the few scraps of information I have gathered from the other local wizards It is apparent that Sir Lawerence mis calculated a major symbol in his summoning circle. He was not able to close it before a group fiends tore him limb from limb.
All of this is of course not 100% accurate, but I now believe that he may have had an accomplace, this person is not yet known, but I am working on it, and should have more information by tomorrows eve. Good speed, and may the Lords of Stormreach rot from the inside for bringing these creatures into our home!

Pudding.
What kind?
As a side note to all our readers. What's up with the pudding?
First, pudding is funny. It sounds funny, it's funny in concept. And of course, rather silly to fixate on pudding.
But we didn't just pick pudding randomly. One night, I had pudding while playing. It was the day before things started. The first night of the event, we were all raided up and waiting. Hanging out chatting and such.
I called out to the other half, "Is there any pudding left?", and by habit, hit the push to talk button, so that everyone in the raid could hear my plee for pudding. It quickly became an inside joke about my love of pudding. And got worked into MACSDF.
And I do love me somes pudding.

Communiqué
To: General Dane
From: KOTA Officer Terrah on position defending the north walls.
We had a quiet night last night General, hardly a devil to speak of attempted to approach us. We see devils behind the new barrier, some are taunting us. I am also sickened to report they have taken the dead guards who remained at their posts and stuck their heads on sticks, displaying them for all to see. Whatever plans they had to have this intimidate us had the opposite effect, the city guards are now more emboldened to destroy the devils outright and no longer fear them. Those foolish fiends have done me a great favor.
As ordered we abandoned the barricades in the streets and instead set some of the city guards to clearing the ways, the devils can teleport where they wish so a free reign and travel around the city is vital to its defense. I've scattered my forces so as to keep the enemy away from the larger groups. My plan is to have the smaller party teams pan out across our lines using them as bait to draw the devils in and if the devils strike at them my main striker force can be sent in to flank the attackers and wipe them out. It will be nice to be the one setting the traps this time instead of the other way around.
We used the lull in the battle to repair many of our defenses, our weapons, and much of our armor. General, I am pleased to report we sealed the north gate again and Litz aided in magically encasing it. We did this in a single night, an impressive feat. We have also through Litz leading a band of wizards erected a grand invisible magical barrier around the marketplace and the entire city of stormreach. I have done this in secret. Those devils wont be leaving or coming in over the walls. If they face us it will be from one direction only and they will be trapped within the city walls. General Dane, I have done this to assure that even if we fall and the marketplace is destroyed, these devils will be trapped here. It may not hold them long but hopefully long enough that perhaps Khorvaire can rally an army to destroy the devil invasion. Nothing else comes in and nothing else goes out. Its our fight to the finish, and we are the only ones who can stop these devils now. If we achieve victory this barrier can be removed with ease.
I continue to manage house denieth, they have given us another supply of armor, weaponry, and arrows. You should be receiving some as I write this.
Our forces are armed and morale is high, it is win or die now.
Strength and Honor General Dane.

A human, just over six feet in height, makes his way to the command area. He is dressed in full adaminatine plate mail with a silver bastard sword sheathed at his waist, a large shield on his left arm, and holding his helmet. He is splattered with the blood of devils from the fighting.
"Pardon me, my name is Riordan Dragoran and I am looking for a General Dane McArty. I have just returned from spending almost a year in Khorvaire only to find my home of Stormreach under siege. I was returning to see if my friends and allies were still in the area. Perhaps you know of Cupcake, she and I did some adventuring here over a year ago. But, unfortunately, now it not the time to search for friends. I fought with the other defenders when the barrier arose around the marketplace tent, and after asking around, I was directed here. I wish to offer the strength of my blade and the power of my faith to the defense, and since General McArty is in charge, he is the one I need direction from."

Riordin returns to the command area and salutes General McArty. The Paladin's armor is heavily splattered with the blood of devils, but even the blood cannot cover the dirt and grime from the destruction that occured in the Marketplace.
You could hear the fighting all over the barracks, it was impossible to tell how many groups of defenders were enegaged with the enemy.
"After I rest a moment, and clean some of this blood and grime from myself, I will return to the Marketplace to is if there is anything else that can be done for the wounded. I am curious though. I don't think the Twelve would intentionally cause a magical backlash like this. But, looking at the situation tactically, and hearing the fears of others about Vaneer F'nord. Perhaps Shavarath's forces did not strike the city eariler, because it was the Twelve that put the barrier up around the Tent. That barrier kept the devils 'in' as much as it kept us 'out'. And perhaps, in order to prevent the devils from overwhelming us all, the Twelve caused the magical backlash that destroyed the Bazaar Tent, but also collapased the portal to Shavarath's home plane.

A stretcher carrying a battered and bloodied female drow is walked up the steps to the General.
The white armor is torn in two, along her head is a large gash and her arm has so many cuts it is impossible to count them. Yet her chest moves up and down signifiying that she lives.
It is Terrah.
One of the carriers is a Large red armored Warforged named Ranok. He lets down the stretcher and walks forward.
"General I am Ranok, second in command of the Keepers of the Arcane elite guard. She asked me to bring her here before taking her to the healers against my better wishes."
The general looks back with a questioning gaze.
"It was terrible General Dane. We took a massive hit from the first wave but Terrah was commanding the troops and the city guard with excellent precision. Then out of a portal a large creature appeared, it was the Lagg monster. It took her before we could react and struck her down, she battled bravely but alas she fell, we fought the monster off as it was obvioulsy some assasin sent by the devilish forces.
Terrah is stabalized for now but I will take our officer to House J."
A haggered and scratchy voice speaks from the stretcher.
Her eyes wavering she then spoke with the sound of a voice that sounded like crackling paper mixed with gurgling water.
"Fear not General, she'll be allright. The **** fool wanted to come and give her last orders before being healed. By your leave General we shall be off. The portal gone, the tent obliterated, many lives lost. The war is over...for now."
The warforged saluted and then dissappeared into the streets.
In the darkest corner of the darkest ally in stormreach two red devilish eyes pear through the marketplace. A voice whispers on the wind audible to only a few who pass it off as nothing. The sound drifts across the generals ears as well as many others around him.
"Its never over..."

He has left the game I am sad to report. He has relocated, and has asserted his focus on life an the pursuit of becoming a professional cartoonist. He has dropped by to visit his guildies in the MAC forums to keep in touch : ) I am happy to report he is doing well and is getting closer to his dream. The mighty Shrimpo has been since elevated to General status...: )

This is not a necro although the thread is old. My hope for posting again in this thread was to celebrate our old Market on the anniversary of its destruction. I was going to bump this when chrono opened up and the coolest event in game history was re-shown at the end of the raid. I decided then not to bump it, but as we are near the 3rd anniversary of the single greatest moment in my DDO tenure I thought it might be appropriate now.
My hope is for those who were not around for the first big bang that they might see a bit of the fun we had. The collectible cards which were the fan favorites have been lost to time and the blog posting of the created works as well. Those cards where a great loss, but as I reread this thread and some of the names who no longer play.....I can not help but feel some emotion. So I lift my mug of ale and toast to all those who have made this game fun for me past and present. I offer a toast in memory of our old market and in memory of those heroes who have moved on. CHEERS!
