View Full Version : DDO Tutorial Channel on YouTube.

I've created a Youtube channel called DDOTutorials.

http://www.youtube.com/user/DDOTutorials

Why?
To create a place for us to share DDO information in a digital video format. YouTube and other services are often used by players of other MMOs to divulge information.

But, shouldn't we let experience guide us?
Simply put, no. Many players don't have time to struggle with some portions of this game. While some player's style would dictate that they do not seek out-of-game assistance for any part of the game, other players might be able to enjoy the game more if the "trade secrets" of DDO are explained to them in a friendly, informative, over-the-shoulder manner.

What kind of information?
Anything that would be helpful to demonstrate. How to do a particular quest and where the traps are. Good strategies for beating bosses. Speed run demonstrations that show the best path to take and which monsters can be skipped. Stealth guides for how best to utilize stealth/invisibility to bypass portions of quests. Demonstrations of how to solo content that isn't easy to solo. Tricks that are useful for overcoming the odds, and videos that demonstrate helpful techniques for a given class.

Why Video?
Because some of us learn visually, and because video often divulges the nuances of how things are done. Also, some people have time to watch a 5-8 minute video without loading the DDO client. Since the videos have a text section, textual information can also be used.

Why are you posting it here?
For a couple of reasons.
1) To share what little DDO knowledge I have with the public at large and
2) I need your help to make this youtube channel useful! I'm not a DDO pro! I don't have time to run every quest in the game and figure out the fastest ways to do it. None of us do! Those more experienced than myself could surely contribute to this and create something that everyone could benefit from.

How can you contribute?
Easily, download and install Taksi, an open source video recording software from: http://taksi.sourceforge.net/. Does not record sound (which might be helpful in some cases), but, there are other alternatives. Use trial GameCam, or buy it, or FRAPS works as well. You could even use Camtasia Studio. Simply load one of these programs, get into DDO, start your quest, and record. When done, upload to your own youtube channel, and send a message to the youtube user DDOTutorials containing the link to your video. I'll favorite the video and add it to the channel for everyone to enjoy.

In all, I recorded and uploaded the first video that you see there in about 10 minutes... so with a 30 minute investment of installing the software, learning it, and creating the youtube channel, you can be on the road to plopping out informative videos any time you have a spare few minutes, and the way the programs work, it's as easy as pressing the "start recording" key twice, uploading to youtube whatever file your software creates in the meantime, and typing up a short description of what exactly you're doing in the video.

Why should I give my secrets to you so that you can just skip game content/know where all the traps are/etc etc etc?
You shouldn't. If you feel like your hard-earned secrets aren't something you'd like to share, simply don't bother replying :).

Isn't this bad for players to "skip" game content?
While there is some merit to the claim that someone who speeds through the levels misses a lot of the fun of the game, in many cases, a player who does not speed through at least some of the content, may NEVER see any of the higher content. I personally think that sucks, because I like this game, and would gladly do anything to help keep people, including myself, interested. Also, the structure of this particular game essentially requires the repetition of many quests on various difficulties, sometimes redoing the same difficulty multiple times. I would advise anyone to go through a quest normally a time or two before using a tutorial. There are different levels of intimacy that a tutorial like the one I've made can be used. It can be viewed as a loose guide: "Oh, i saw this vid earlier of a guy just skipping all the monsters in this quest except for the boss." - or - it can be used as a map, being held open in a seperate window and referenced at various time frames: "Okay guys, up here there's a fire trap and two trolls, in the video they body pull to get just one of the trolls at a time..." and so on. This allows the individual player to choose his/her own level of involvement.

What we do NOT want:
Exploits, Cheats, Hacks, etc. Anything that violates the TOS.
Funny, entertaining videos... there are plenty of those on youtube available via search (I suggest you do a search for DDO on youtube if you haven't already, lots of fun to be had.)

Note:
This is essentially my second attempt at such a thread. The first attempt was badly hijacked by people telling me that the idea of said channel was foolish, unreasonable, and not useful. I foolishly fed the trolls, and the topic was locked, but, this time, I am politely requesting at this point that if you are not contributing or giving moral support/suggestions for videos, etc, that you kindly not pullute our thread.

So please, if you have any suggestions for videos you would like for me to try to create (I only have a level 7 and level 6 toon at my disposal) or suggestions for videos you'd like to see others create, please post here and ask for them... maybe someone will fraps it up for you :).

Thank you!

If possible, you may want to develop opener maps, or open the video with a link to a map on photobucket or somesuch. That way people would also have a handy visual resource that would be more useful in certain circumstances (such as where are the shrines, how do get to them) etc etc... without watching the entire video.

Kind of a "quick reference" tied to the quest.

A group of players could progress through each quest on normal with the Cleric or rogue recording the action, and so forth.

This is a great idea! I've watched demo videos once in a while, but they tend to be scattered all over the place, as each person just keeps links to his/her own.

A suggestion: post this in 'guide' form as well in the Guides session, and keep direct links there to all videos that peoplesubmit in the channel. Redundant? Yes -- but for this to work, you'll need to maintain community visibility for long enough during the 'seeding' period until self-interest drives people in a contribute/see what's new cycle in the channel itself. Having some building activity in the guides section will help this.

Some reasons I agree with what the op wants to do:
-this kind of thing can be used to encourage people to get their feet wet in solo play beyond the low level stuff which is kind of a joke anyways. And solo play gives very valuable experience that helps people be better team players.
-many people can learn quickly enough through this kind of thing. For those whose characters are gaining experience faster than they are, they wont be able to keep that kind of pace up and level cap piggy backing completely on other players' methods without learning a lot themselves.
-avoiding mis-education: a chance to visually teach great team and solo tactics, teaching newer players the most effective way to kill certain monsters vs the more popular ways to kill them.
-teaching good resource management with examples (ie. instead of casting finger of death on each monster in a group you can mass suggest and have them kill each other, agro management to reduce total healing, etc.)

Judge, feel free to look through the vids I already have and let me know if any would fit well with what you want in this channel.

cforce/villainsimple: I've put a link in the description to a map of the quest I found online...
I think I'll post something in the guides thread a bit later (I would just copy/paste, but that's cross-posting @_@)

Are there any good public, open sites that have maps? I'm just linking to AllianceDDO maps as it stands... not 100% sure if they are cool with that or not, and not sure how to contact them without signing up for their forums (which I may have to do later).

Ghoste: I've looked at a few of your videos, I will probably end up adding a couple of them as I flesh out the channel a little... the popcorn one seemed very amusing and possibly useful, thought I'm not sure which quest it is on... can you go back and flesh out your descriptions to make sure they include quest names and difficulties and such where possible? That would make them a bit more complete for the purposes of the tutorial channel. If not, I'll still make use of them, but it would be nice.

Thanks guys, good responses all...

Alex Haddox is putting together a really nice maps site for DDOcast which can be found at www.alexhaddox.com/ddo. If it helps you out feel free to link to there.

I'll post a link up on DDOcast to this channel as well. Personally, I like the ability to learn some tips and such. Walkthroughs are a part of most video games. I tend to use them 'after the fact' to see what I've missed and maybe learn some tips.

I'll have to check out that open source video recording program, sounds pretty cool.

much better. See how easy that was.

I dug up the link to the weapons instructional video. I found it useful when I started.

pit solo video.

Probably the most useful part is to pay attention to the small map orb to see where on the map the guy is running, and then check back on the main screen to see what level he's on.

some constructive criticism I was gonna post in the previous thread:

Speed run instructional videos designed to address the following:
"Non-veteran players (such as myself) do not recognize every icon on every character class hotbar. If you have time, it would help if you told us in the description of your video what the important icons that you use are."
are probably not a good idea. It's mixing the basics and advanced techniques all at once. Keep these two separate.

such as:

general class tutorials: how to's about your class; what spells are useful on what monsters, icon descriptions, usefulness of combat feats/skills (e.g. diplomacy, intimidate, trip, stun,..), weapons, hot-keys, etc. This type of video can be made in any dungeon and does not need to be tied into any specific run.

Speed run tutorials: just need to cover the run itself. There is no need to tutor the player on how to play his character in such videos. They should already have that part down before even thinking about speed runs.

I've posted this, as per the suggestion above, to the user guides forum as well... I'll be checking back and forth to see which one receives the most support and focus my further posts there. I've added the weapon tutorial posted above to one of the playlists on the channel, so, right now we have 2 videos, and more of Ghoste's to look through and decide where to add them.

Does anyone else have ideas for more "playlists" to set up? I think setting up playlists will be the best way to organize these on youtube, allowing people to post a link to a whole set of "how-to" videos, or "speed run" videos, or "tips and tricks" videos based on what they ask for, rather than posting a link to the whole channel (which I hope will eventually be huge).

Right now, I am going to invest a little time in DDO, if I do a speed run or come across anything to teach, I have my recorder loaded and ready to fire.

A couple I'm thinking about trying to teach:
1) Bard Fascination tips and tricks (I need to practice, myself, so if anyone else wants to tackle this it'd be great)
2) More speed runs (This is what I'm aiming for, my character will be more useful as a teacher if I can get him up in level a bit more, I believe, the first 4 levels of this game are fairly simple)

btw, I'm on Thelanis as Vyleon if anyone wants to group.

Try using invisibility on your bard when fascinating. It makes a huge difference in how much damage you take.

I have cancelled my DDO subscription, but if anyone is interested I would like to hand off the DDOTutorials site to someone interested in maintaining it. Only has a couple vids, favorites, and subscribers, but... anyway...

If you're interested... e-mail me at jkjudgex@gmail.com and give me a quick indication of how serious you are about running the youtube channel and why you're good for it.

Thanks, and, I hope to see you all in-game in the future (DDO or elsewhere).

Pra Out.
