Only thing I like about this show is that my wife watches it.
Gives me another hour of DDO that she leaves me alone.;)
If it not on the History channel I probably won't see it.
Though I do indulge in a little contemporary crime investigation Si-Fi aka "C.S.I.".
I'll also watch a little "Mythbusters" when I'm not playing.
(Those guy do have one of the greatest jobs in the world.:))
Other than that the TV is something to keep the wife occupied while I play DDO.:D

ya know, way back when that show first started vagas casinos started to refuse bets on the show based on the fact that the show's winner is predetermined and therefore not a viable bet...........
with that said, heres my take on "reality" shows......
/rant on
so called reality shows are anything but reality. these shows are predicated on the social belief that hate sells. one thing always sells in the retail tv/movie industry and that is sex, however in recent years tv show producers have found out that what sells even more is hate. all reality shows have an element of hate, sometimes dressed up and served as drama, but in actuality its pure hatred. think about it, you dont watch the show to see who wins necessarily, you watch the show to see the plotting against, the devious scheming, etc of the persons involved to see who is voted off the show and in which order. these shows illustrate how the basic human nature of hate towards our fellow man can unfold through a series of twisting and turning script writing maneuvers. before long you start to join in with the hate and start to cheer on your favorite bad guy. where does this evolution come from? from years of the good guy always winning television and movies. in real life the good guy nearly never wins, so why not portray that aspect on mainstream media? thats the question everyone in the beginnings of reality show asked themselves and the answer was; wait a minute, the good guy doesn't always win, so why should we continue that falsity? creation of the hate inspired bad guy on mainstream media in a new form called reality tv programing. think about this, when was the last time you watched a reality show and pulled for the good guy/girl? when did you last see the person win that was always honest, helpful and considerate of others? loaded question, sorry, the answer is you didn't see that, and you never will. why won't you ever see it? because it doesn't sell airtime in the mainstream any longer. starting in the 1950's and continuing up through the late 1980's the mainstream media latched onto the fact that everyone wanted to see alter reality tv programing. people wanted to watch what life could be like, what life would be like if we had a super hero do-good person as the main character. do you think survivor the tv show would have been a success if it had been released in 1957? by the way, thats the year "leave it to beaver" was released and if you're too young to know what that show was about then none of this is going to make any sense to you whatsoever! ok, lets move up in time a little bit, what about 1960? would survivor and american idle have struck it gold then? could those shows really compete with the andy griffith show? I doubt it very seriously. move ahead another decade, 1970, what about hate tv versus the brady bunch? still too distant in the mind of today's viewers. what about 1984, the cosby show! surely the market was ready then for hate tv, right? sorry, no hate tv shows there either. by the way in the 1980's we older folk were watching other shows such as the wonder years, family ties, macgyver, growing pains, mork and mindy and miami vice. see a pattern in those tv shows? they were all based around 2 principles, family togetherness and the good guy always wins. lets move up to the 1990's, what were we watching just 9 to 18years ago? beverly hills 90210, doogie howser, MD, home improvement, seinfeld, full house and quantum leap. what was the main theme there? 8 young adults coping with life, a teenager doctor, two guys making fun of the blue collar world of construction, 3 guys and a girl making fun of life itself, a whole group of people showing us what family life could be like in a funny world and a do-good guy leaping through time to do what? ol my god, the right thing, setting history on a straight and morale path! then we all hit the y2k bug and tv shows changed forever. tv took a drastic turn from doing good to reality tv.......now don't get me wrong, we still have family and do good shows on prime time television, but do the shows of today really compete with the morale values and the good guy always wins theme of 50 years ago? not even close by comparison. People want to see bad things happen to their fellow man, people want to see the ultimate downfall of the other guy. seeing this doesn't necessarily make you a better person or make you feel better about yourself but it does make you feel a sense of connection to the old saying "getting back at the man". you may not be able to make your own situation better, but you can sure as heck make the other guy's situation a lot less appealing. so the next time you are tuning in for one of these reality shows i challenge you to ask yourself this question: what is the morale value of this show? and more importantly: who am i cheering for?

OK...
To be honest I don't believe in reality all that much... I spend more time hanging with Avatars than real folkes, I have a work personality that is nothing like my real one... I read rather than talk to most folkes and if given the opportunity to candyflip/hippyflip or go to vegas... I'll choose flipping anyday. My favorite shows are Buffy, Angel, and Mars...
...I don't believe in good or evil, I like the Underdog and I hate Big Brother... man... Survivor is merely another for of escapism and silliness that helps me take my mind off of all my silly tin-foil hat ideas... and trust me on this...
Oh Yeah Shamguard...
My Bro loves the Bachelor and all those shows for the same reason.. on the football weekend.. she makes him lunch... and leaves him alone to drink and scream... nothing like a good woman :)

Survivor was interesting when it was new, but I don't care for it at all anymore.
I do watch celebrity apprentice though. I probably wouldn't have cared about this season if it wasn't celebrity.
Maybe if they had celebrity survivor (real celebrities, random nobodies from previous seasons don't freaken count), or convict survivor, with REAL ass kickery...
hmmm.
Survivor: Detroit ghetto.

LOL.. I agree... I'm so amazed that the people on these shows know so very little. Like how hard is it to set up a lean-to? Make a decent fire or even a fishing spear. ****.. even a fishing net is easy...
..what disturbs me even more is that these people are put in tropical conditions and they complain about the hardships of weather, and food gathering. It's not like these people are stuck in the Arctic or the Snora Desert... these folkes are on an island rife with vegetation, warm weather and life... this is not hard.
The funny thing is that everyone on this show is an American (they don't allow foreigners) and if these folkes are considered a broad spectrum of the US society, then I must say.. you guys got no camping skillz :)
This show really is comedic...
I bet the application says.. "Do you know anything about wilderness survival"... and if you answer it with anything but "I'm a noob and I can barely swim" then you get auto-declined. :)

I was a gammer before I meet my wife.
When I would show up late for a date because the combat in my PnP session went longer than I expected it to.
She knew what to expect from me.
After what will be 27 years of marriage next Thursday, she lets me play my games and I let her watch her TV shows.
Then every so often we go out to dinner, a move, and/or run off to Vegas for a few days.
Both our daughters are grown so we're back to just the two of use most of the time.
The TV and the games are just our cheap everyday entertainment.
The funny thing is DDO still costs me less, even if you include my ISP, than the satellite connection for the TV.:)
So she can't even give me a hard time about that.:)

Don't know why you're surprised Scars. The budget for the national and state parks as a whole has declined every year for the last 10 years for the simple reason that people get out less. I'll be generous and say that I would be surprised if even 10% of the people that play this game know how to do the above mentioned things.
Granted I'm in the 10% that does. Backpackers rule!!!!! :D

Yeah it's funny...
People live in a beautiful country, they drive down long highways... they see areas that have no people near bby all the time and yet, they don't know what to do if they get stuck.
Now I've done my military service, my folkes took me out camping and I've done a lot.. maybe not compared to my father who hunted and trapped as a boy in the North Country but hell man... I know how to survive a long time in crappy conditions... and yet I'm a cityboy who hates getting muddy (been there, done that.. I want dirty.. I'll date me ex:eek::D)
...and yet when I see these people who know zip... I just wonder.
How many folkes here know how to scrounge, steal and basically do what it takes to survive on a tropical island plum full of food?
Oh yeah... here's my other querie... here you are, stuck on an island with a bunch of freaks.. trying to win a meelion dollars and yet you're not putting scorpions in peoples bags or setting up mantraps to take out the competition... these folkes on these shows are freaks...
...a million dollars.. people I don't like... hmmm... clubbing baby seals.. uhhh...
Strange with a capital W.

They're either auto-declined or those of us who know what the hell we're doing wouldn't touch the show with a ten-foot pole. For the latter, we'd be voted off in the first round simply because we actually know something beyond a ham sandwich...
"Uh, oh! He's dangerous! We should vote him off now before he gets immunity!!" :D
