View Full Version : DDO Backstage 2

For this edition of DDO Backstage, we asked the Devs:

"What feature, creature or system would the players most recognize that you worked on?"

Here are their answers:

Piloto:
I’m a Systems Designer. I co-designed and then fully implemented the Module 6 Eldritch Device crafting system (not including the Stone of Change). In a typical module, I also give all monsters their stats and special abilities.

Zyrca:
The system that most players interact with the most that I worked on is the examination system. This is the system that shows information about an item when you hover over it in your inventory. I worked on both the first implementation and the revamp. I continue to do what I can to make examination more readable and more useful in general. (Psst...shes also responsible for collectible bags!)

Keeper:
Landscapes! :)

DrGonzo:
Hmm… Probably character transfer, Kynapse pathing, or the engine upgrades in Mod 5.

Tolero:
I have been very busy since the day I was hired, but the most recognizable and recent thing that you see on a day to day basis would be the splash screen page with the Pit Fiend. I often spend time helping with screen captures for use by the Marketing team, and that was a shot that I took. I also work with the Live Events team. However, the things that I do the most are those which you never see, which would be perpetually charting feed back, and working closely behind the scenes to ensure it is getting to the proper places. All in all it makes for a very busy, but extremely enjoyable, lifestyle for me at Turbine.

Eldorudo:
I have enjoyed everything that I have worked on to this point, but one of the most recognizable pieces of my work would be the Mod 4 dungeon, A Cry for Help. In that dungeon I created Ursula Tador, the damsel in distress (or so you thought) until she transformed into the bloodthirsty, shape-shifting, gender-swapping Lothar the Insidious!

Codog:
Combat, feats, spells, skills, and special abilities.

Thats all for this edition. If you've got a FUN question to ask the devs, you can send it to ddosubmissions (at) turbine.com!
If you have a more serious, development related question, don't forget you can send questions to DDOCast's Ask The Dev's by emailing DDOCast@gmail.com. Be sure to put "Ask The Devs" in the subject line.

Well, this should put to rest the rumor that DDO has only 2 devs and a hamster in a wheel.

(Kidding aside, nice info ... good to put a name with a ... thing :D )

I really love this revamp that happened. It looks a lot better, is more readable, etc. I just wish they'd fix the line on the one background near the top for the silver frame. :)

Yeah, but it helps the theory that DDO has 1 Dev with multiple personalities, and Telero (who joined the team after the rumor had started).

No, not in Module 4. My voice is in the game though.

I still laugh every time I hear the voiceover for A Cry for Help. :D

You probably do character transfer, Kynapse pathing, or the engine upgrades in MOD 5?

Are ya not sure Doc? Shouldn't someone have told ya that when they hired you?

Just a lil joke Doc, dont go messin with my upgrade engine or go transfering my characters...if thats what you do.

Are you one of the background voices in the taverns?

I can only think of 4 real voices: Regular DM, Female DM, Gygax and Arneson.

Although I've never done the organized PvP, so I guess it could be there.

Clues? Hints? :)

Would that be the mysteriously less-deep voice we occasionally hear? I can't think of examples, but I'm sure others know what I mean.

Oh, then there's the voice in the background in the market - a town crier that you hear from time to time.

Hmm, just a guess here, but I'm betting it's one of the lines in Coalescence Chamber. There's a couple times where the DM just takes on a very wierd voice. (Well wierd from the rest of voices he's used.)

I wonder what happened to the female DM from Mod 5 though.

My voice was added in Mod 6.

Oh, well then.

That probably makes you Arratriekos. Now, was that enhanced or did you do that voice with no digital/computer effects? If not enhanced, I think it may be high time to consider that 3-packs-a-day habit, hmmm? ;)

We have to have a discussion about smoking and you.... voice sounds a little rough. First time I have heard my guild tell me to turn up the DM voice and everyone to be quiet.

The hamster wheel was actually appropriated by the LotRO dev team 4 months ago.

Just a lil joke Doc, dont go messin with my upgrade engine or go transfering my characters...if thats what you do.

hehehe... well, as one of the technical developers on the game I do a lot of things people don’t see. Like back when PVP came out, I overhauled some of the client / server synchronization code in order to make it a smoother experience. But that's something people don’t notice if it works right.
So, the probably up there just qualifies what people would probably notice. ;)

Ya, I have that sort of job too. I am a System Admin, so people expect things to just work (and they usually do). Its only when things DON'T that they notice me (even if I am not the cause, but the cure...). No respect. :)

Try working in Microbiology. People complain about the smells from your lab and you are the last person they want to see. If Micro is paying you a visit, it usually means you have a problem and it's going to take a lot of time/ money/ effort to fix it. No respect, I tell you.:D

Ooh cool. You got Dr. Gonzo to post.

Hmm… [...] engine upgrades in Mod 5.

Just a quick question on DDO Engine stuffs... since Dr Gonzo might be probably reading.

Any chance DDO will pick up the DX10 engine updates that LotRO got a few books ago? Assuming LotRO ever found it worth it. The initial results were "pretty but slow" if I remember right. Or would DX10 shadows/water not even work with our content?

Cry for Help Voice Over

One of my favorite things in game is to take a new player or a player who has never run Cry For Help in and listen to them laugh the first time they hear the "Voice". As many posters have said this is my favorite voice over in game - makes me laugh everytime.

Although I do still enjoy "Trolls... There are Trolls Here!"

Keeper - I was grouping with some guildies in the vale and we all agreed its a masterpiece of game design. Its "paced" nicely and it flows well. There are nice visual clues and markers to lead you round. Nothing is so far away that getting to it is a chore. And whats more, its breathtaking! Amazing work dude! :D
