View Full Version : Random Acts of Kindness

This is a somewhat random post, but I was just curious to see how friendly our server popultion is. Have you seen someone perform a random act of kindness before? Maybe give loot away that a stranger in the party said they could use? Or maybe join a party to do a quest they dont even need, just so that they can help a party out?

I know you cant talk bad about people on the forums, but nobody ever said you cant say something nice about them. I figured it would be nice to have a post where people only have good things to say about each other for a change....

As a DM I often used the Random Axe of Violence to deal with troublesome party members. A ghostly axe would appear, from nowhere, to spin end over end and bury itself in a particularly irritating PC. He/she would fall to the ground, and the axe would fade away, a ghost like laughter filling the room....

I know I've been on the receiving side of a few raise deads from some nice clerics that have joined my "solo" adventures. The res is generally followed by the question "How did you get out here?" Nothing quite like being dead at the end of BAM and having a guild mate come to res me only to find out I didn't kill or aggro anything in the quest or them finding me dead somewhere with no explaination on how I could have died.

This happens a lot withing our guild. And I usually try to mail something nice off to a nice Cleric who helped keep me on my feet when in a pug group.

On a serious note though... A week or so ago I ran a shroud raid with Cataclysm (some outstanding peeps in that guild, and maybe 1 or 2 bad apples imo) and the party dumped a TON of resources on trying to beat the devil (we got REAL close, but lost eventually) but the thing that stood out to me was the clerics (and others in the party too) were just so stoked on how close we got, they didnt complain about how many heal scrolls they used or how many weeks it would take to farm that plat back or how many mnemonics they used on a failed raid, they and the rest of us were just going off about how cool the raid was and how fun that last fight is. Props Catacalysm.

When I am in a pug with a good cleric, or if he is new is really trying. I always give up some wands or plat.

I have also only been back for a couple of weeks, and I have been given some nice stuff from poeple I did not know. I have also received help from KaTet who I am currently a part of. I have even received multiple tells from complete strangers who saw my "I'm Back" thread and said "Welcome back to the game".

I can say after deleting multiple capped characters and giving away millions in plat and items, I did not want to come back and start over, but the kindess of the poeple from Ghallanda has made my return a breeze. Even one of the leaders of my old guild looked to see if he had some items for me.

So heres my thanks to all you have been a huge contributer to my returning.

Pre MOD 4 I was randomly given +6 INT Goggles that were rr halfling by Dimsdale, I didn't know him, and didn't ask him for them. I just happened to be standing there at the House P auctioneer and saw TT in General chat and knew he had party chat selected while trying to go into 'mouse look mode' I mentioned it happed to me all the time and he just forked them over for the hell of it!

Thanks Dimz!

way back when i first started playing so long ago, i was doing water works wit a freind and we picked up a group.

there was another wizard in the party and i was struggling to learn how to play so he gave me some advice, taught me about inscribing. then he ran to the marketplace bought all of the level one and two scrolls and the inscription material so i could inscribe them then just gave me some plat to help out.

since that when i'm questing if someone is talking about there equipment and i happen to have something better i my inventory that i don;t really need i trade it to them to help them out.

I used to keep some very nice low lvl equipment, let's say like a +1 shocking burst scimmy lvl 4, as I reroll a lot so I find this stuff useful. But I've less space than ever lately so I can no longer keep this kind of stuff.

So in the last weeks, I started to browse the "Who" pannel to find some lowbie that could use them and mail freely to them as lil gifts. Trying to spot rpimarily ppl that aren't in guild, much chance these are gonna be real newbs so I'm glad to help them rather than selling for a few GP I totally don't need.

If you have ever run with The Dragon Society then you would know that such things are common.
To be honest, I have seen many PUG's or even guild grps that arnt friendly in this manner.

Yeah, you gotta watch out for those Dragon Society guys, they are pretty shifty! ;) Good to see you guys back btw hehe

In a recent reaver raid my wizzy was given a +3 int tome. No one gives these away. By far the most thoughtful thing of many I have seen on this server.

This is the kind of stuff I like to see!! I personally have given away 3, +3 tomes in the Reaver raid due to the tomes not being what the character I was playing at the time considered a "primary stat." In most cases the people absolutely couldnt believe that I was letting the tomes get rolled on by the classes in the party whos primary stats they were. In most cases they people that they went to were very grateful, and that sort of stuff makes me happy. In one instance the person who I let a +3 Wis tome go to didnt even have the common courtesy to say thank you, but we wont get into that...

It saddens me when people have become so loot hungry that they would rather have their barbarian eat a +3 Int than let the poor wizard have it when they could really put it to good use. (That is just an example btw and never really happened that I know of) I know what some of you will say. "It is my loot and I pulled it and I can do what I want with it." That is completely true, but that is the exact attitude that fosters the "everyone else is selfish, so I will be selfish attitude."

And that is all I have to say about that...

Have been witness to many random acts of kindness both bestowed upon me and fellow friends. anywhere form +3 int tomes given away at the reaver for nothing......most people do not give tomes away and if they do they want allot for it. i myself many times have just been chillin out side the bank and had my trade window pop up and people have given to me out of the blue, +3 mith full plate +4 mith full plate disruptions and plat from 10k all the way up to 100k one time. karma is a beautiful thing. cuz of this i will always give stuff away that i am not using ....no matter how uber the item is. i will not sell on auction or vendor....there is always someone out there who needs it from newbs to old school.....it keeps the game alive and helps out. i cannot stand to see what items are going for on the auction "+2 flaming burst dwarf axe" 50k plat :O come on. acts of kindness is something i've seen allot more of as of late and hope to see more of........ and to those of you who have shared thank you

When I first started playing my wizard, a nice lady from Old Timers guild ( i hate that i don't remember her name) saw me at the trainer and just loaded me up with scrolls and wands and such. Gave me a scroll of dismissal (i'm still not at lvl to use it) but she told me i'll be very excited when I can. She also gave me some tips (i asked) and told me what feats she though were best (this is my first caster so i didn't know jack). This was so cool to me, i decide to pay it forward (before i went broke lol - now i need to sell everything!). I started giving stuff away to random folks in the harbor. Probly the best response i got was when i gave a lvl one dwarf fighter (i think) a +1 ** Dwarven Axe of Reptilian Bane. She was so happy I think her toon actually smiled.:)

lol...still not sure How you got there in the first place..

But the one that really sticks out in my mind is back a couple years ago when I was a baby cleric waiting for a Butchers run to start..one of the big kids (Lvl 9 cleric..lol) walks up to me , up pops the trade window with the message "Here ..Take it" I ooo'd and ahhhh'd over +1 fullplate of power I for half and hour to the guys I was with ..lol..I still remember her Name and guild..

Man, I love it! I often found that unexplainable gastrointestinal pains resulting in crappiing ones pants for Charisma based characters not following their creed works well ( and gets a few good laughs too), while a really messy deal can affect the most Dexterous!

Now way back when i first started out playing DDO i was on one day at the inn by STK and some complete stranger walked up and handed me a +3 flametouched iron dwarven axe.....this set me on my way(used it well into being capped at lvl 10)....don't remember that persons name but i remember their generosity and have used it as a point of character for myself as a player......i will go out of my way to help people out with gear if they truly need it.......i've helped returning player numerous times (your welcome Wig...lol) and even those unfortunate souls who just plain have crappy luck at pulls and can't get the items they need ( big 5, tomes, etc.) so you can say that the people from all the servers that merged (Fernia, Ghallandra, and Lhazzarr) have the ability of random acts of both generosity and selfishness (we're all guilty of it).

hmm i'll have to think where the harbor is again, lol.

Its nice to see the acts of kindness happening. I've often just mailed wands randomly to lowbie clerics. I'm never expecting anything back, but sometimes when you get a thank you tell back it kinda makes it worthwile :)

I just came back to the game 11 days ago after more then year away(had left for both gamr play issues and personal tragedy in my life). And though i had 4 lvl 10 charactersrs, due to many of the changes of the game after only trying giant hold with one on a pug for kicks I felt a new character would be easier to make well then spending a ton of jink on feat changes etc.

So anyways my new guy was just up to lvl 4 (2/2 ranger rogue) and having to solo the WW for like the umpteenth time trying to get the widows bracers for my super dex build. I was feeling bored and no teams where on looking fora guy like me, when I saw someones group saying elite invaders run in progress. I saw that it was a mere team of 2 and thought well if they could handle it already maybe i could tag along for a few tokens ahead of time. I asked just in time as they where nearly through. The leader Mad machine a very mighty warforged pal13/rg2/sorc1 let me join and tag along, netting me 5 tokens from the last chest along with decent gold value vendor junk, all i had to do was reach them as a lvl 4 through all them render respawns lol( talk about a personal mini quest;). The team broke up right after that run it still was a very nice gesture to let a lowbie stranger tag along for even one chest.

And to all you dwarves who think yet top dogs as a low con finesse elf i may not keep up in HP or Dmg but my race is almost ceratain to have created the WF and all elves can be proud that MADMACHINE is definatly a real champion protector of elfdom

How could I pass up the oppurtunity to thank many people in the game, both guildies and non guildies...

Silenoz - gave me 2 big 5 battleaxes yesterday on my bard Spellbuff (who will now chop your head off at the random role of a 20, or blink any construct outta existance) he also gave a lowbie level 5 newb cleric (years ago) +5 full plat, +5 flaming mace and a TON of plat and healing supplies, bro you da man, have helped my toons out from the beginning of the WBB so many years ago.

Forerunner - bro you have given me lots as well - mad props

Neato - our constant swap of gear that benfits our toons at all levels is greatly appreciated

Wigs - you hooked me up plenty of times in your pre-vacation days

Ryu - plenty of healing supplies,a nd some easy loot runs - couldn't ask you for much more thanks!

And to all the people who have donated to Chingus when I am running him - thanks! I look forward to keeping all of Ghallanda healthy - or again thanks to Sil - chopping your heads off!

He joined our guild last week after running in a pug with us, and after hearing how rude we are, he joined right up.
I'v been playing scince Beta and have yet to pull a Vorpal. He found out and hooked me up. He has also been e-mailing our clan with all kinds of good stuff. Unfortuantly he's leaving us (DDO) but we all hope to him come back and keep running with us.

yesterday morn I awoke ready and eager to draw my twin blades though I had know way of knowing on what. I had left the small guild that had taken me in early in my recent return to the city, not for malice, nor anger, simply because the whispers in the wind told this leaf it was time to move on, the night before. Feeling free and unbound to any whim but my own I left my place in the inn and stepped out into the city. Right away I saw that a group of brave souls was gathering to seek the red wyrm Velah and I asked if I might join them. Often I am denied for many want a master rogue or a mighty barbarian few seek a master of stealthy combat and cunning tricks. They asked if I could handle the traps and I honestly said I had never yet pitted my moddest skills against such a challenge but was willing to try and call upon all my tricks, that I could even handle the might it took to pull one of the strength levers though I had only a 15 base my rescources where many to increase it. So I enterer the fabled vault of the night part 5 for perhaps my 6th time total between all my characters, and only the 2nd in the recent weeks of my return. I was but a 6/4/1 ranger rogue ftr, my intel only a base 10, and nothing but my skills a few points under max and a +10 disable item. It was on normal yet still I had seen the lightning take lives, the blades cut down mighty warriors, yet with nothing but determination to not fail those who had placed thier trust in me I hurled myself into the twin halls of death. The luck of Rudd was with me and though I had some effort needed to find each box, calling upon all the powers of the utility belt I wore the boxes fell to my skills.

We fought hard, and when we came to locked doors they to fell to my nimble fingers, though several challenged me for a number of tries. Finally we faced the red wyrm, and though tension was high between several of the allies, none lost thier head to either anger or fear and when the battle agaisnt the beast ensued, and though I fell when she was but halfway down, victory came to us.
Excited was I for never before had I been able to taste of the dragons bloody, to stand and gaze out into the stars with peaceful calm my companion. Rudd was once more with me for from the hoarde I pulled a shining silver cape gifting me with a commanding presence.

To end my tale and speak mention of the kind ally, the next day I was trying to trade a +1 int tome I had pulled(my first tome pull ever) for a few white dragon scales when one of my fellow dragon slayers sent me a message saying he would like to gift me with 2 white scales as his way of thanking me for my hard work in the traps and throughout the raid. I was nearly overwhelmed for though I had been offered some nice items now and then, none could compare with the gift of scales. I did not even catch which member of the raid he had been for he came as an alternate named Dagone a lvl 16. He had mentioned which he ahd been but unfortunatly noise in my home had garbled the name to my ears when he spoke it.

So let it be known that DAGONE and his alts is a truly kind and noble warrior and comrade who is worthy of mutual respect from any he adventures with.

Many thanks from Leafon the Whirlwind

Another day passed, my adventuring quite stagnant , many seem to not wish the company of an agile warrior. Late night before last I and a guildy put together a team and attempted the new prison of the planes quest(new for me anyways) it was a long and costly battle, most of us only lvl 11. During the course of the quest we had at times found quiet moments to speak of many things related to table top vs DDO. One of my constant rants is how items often common or easily made in PnP are extremely rare or even raid loot in DDO, my greatest annoyance the Sun Blade. When I mentioned this the cleric in our group named stichs was curious why Id want one so much, you see he had one on his high elf ftr and found it lacking compared to his longswords. I explained how it was only a short sword for feats effecting it, not a bastard sword nor slashing weapon despite its stats and appearance, and that for rogues and two weapon fighters it was a prized off hand blade. He had known of the true value placed on them, that millions can be gained with one on the auction. Yet he said that if I looked him up later, for it was quite late for him, he would offer it to me for a reasonable sum.

In truth I hardly dared believe it, and so a day later when I saw him online on my friends list I asked politely if he had indeed been serious. He immediatly asked where I was and moments later his elven fighter Silvana silverblade was there opening a trade screen. He said give what ever I felt was fair. Not one to take advantage of such generosity I emptied nearly all my gold I had to my name 150k, and my trusty ring of greater acid resist, which had saved my life from countless acid arrows and rust monster spittle, then also went on to an old hardly played alt and tossed in my trusty flaming burst cold iron long sword of pure good, which had slain many frost renders in countless times in invaders and the threnals. Trading a blade for a blade is an important tradition to me.

I know it still was nothing compared to waht he could of gained on auction potentially, but to me a old tabletop player who feels far to many "common" PnP D&D items have been made so rare as to give casters a much greater advantage then warriors especially those who do not make meta-ftw builds which I feel are steadily ruining DDO by so many using them and making more spells be nerfed, and mobs buffed to the point of absurdity, that I was truly greatful for finnally being able to aquire a classic favorite weapon of mine, which I had spent many hours seeking in any dungeon or random chest I had heard been known to drop the blade.

Many thanks to you stichs/silvana for carrying on the spirit of D&D and aiding the cause of the champion of all elfdom.

Yes,

After this one run, this one guy I think from the Black Knights of Templar, invited some of us over for dinner. It was much better then plat, and weapons. I think we had Veal Parm. He was a pretty good cook, but we all had the munchies. SO, I kind of forget.

But we are lucky, cuz we had a stock pile of money. The French, Spanish and the rest of the Christians thought they stole all of our money and land. But really we had it stuffed in our Armor and ran to the hills. We are back now, and we try to give away at least 100k in weapons and plat each day we are on the server.

So, if you are lucky to receive such a gift from one of us, we are not hitting on you. Well, Smoothie might be.

I just wanted to thank those that have helped me in the past.

I also like to peruse the who panel for new low level peoples. Usually casters and I will get them lvl 1 scrolls kits and

SO, thank you again to all that have helped me.

Especially letting my lowbies tag along in quests that are over my head.

Just after starting DDO (my first EVER MMO), playing a freshly minted Paladin that just made it out of the Wavecrest into the Harbor completing Old Skully's a good citizen attempted to perform a random act of kindness. He walked up to me and offered me +2 Plate. I had no idea what to do, I had never seen a trade window before and after a few moments of frustration and thinking what to click, I swung my sword, accidentally. He rightfully got offened/frustrated and left, probably muttering about ungrateful Paladins. Conversely, I immediately thought "wow, how cool was that", "wish I wasn't such an idiot".

I had someone give me a Underwater Action helm in my first ever run through Waterworks. Those things are hard to come by when you are working your first toon up through the ranks...

I was also, when the cap was level 10, allowed to tag along with a group through Tempest Spine elite as a level 7 Rogue. I missed one of the traps (hey, it was my only toon, and I had no hand-me-downs), and someone in the group gave me a +10 Disable Device item (which I couldn't wear yet, but did wear once I reached the ML).

Much later, I had someone flag me down outside the Bank and give me a bunch of uber gear because "he was quitting the game and had an awesome time playing with members of my guild".

Once upon a time there was this noob with a paladin named Chinaman. He started playing DDO on the now defunct Lhazzar server to hang out with some RL friends that all lived far away.

Those friends all got perma-banned the day after he started, but that's another story...

It was week two, he had no idea how the game mechanics worked, how the grouping system and social panel worked, and the only notable piece of gear he had was a mighty +1 short sword of lesser reptilian bane he received for turning in some collectibles. Standing around in the Lobster while recovering HP from yet another failed attempt to solo that Guard Jung quest on hard, a cleric named Honeydew cast some curing spells on him.

"Thanks" he replied.

"No problem" said the cleric, who suddenly opened a trade window with him.

What's this? he thought. Suddenly a shiny ring of ogre power appeared. He didn't know what to do. Was this some sort of scam to get his meager stockpile of gold pieces?

"Take it" said the Honeydew, lighting up that green border around the trade window. He hesitated, then clicked 'accept'. He couldn't believe his eyes. A ring that gave +1 to strength!?! Cautiously he slipped it on. That wonderful bull symbol appeared and that grunting sound effect could be heard. Checking his character sheet it was confirmed. What a wonderful thing!

"What do you want for it?" he sent in a /tell.

"Nothing. Just help the little ones." was the reply.

I will never forget that moment. I have run into Honeydew a handful of times since then (he took an extended break for a period of time) but not surprisingly he didn't remember me or that one random act of kindness that changed the way I looked at the game forever.

Casting a full Heal on some poor bugger that had to death-port into Meridia or removing a Curse/Bane/Fear party hat is one thing. But keeping at least one toon in that level 2-5 range at all times so you can join PUGs with total noobs that simply want to have fun and learn the game is where this same act of kindness really gets repaid. Hand over a masterwork scepter of Devotion II to the cleric, toss the fighter a +1 strength trinket and a lesser false life belt. Give that ranger a +1 composite longbow and hand over that potion of lesser mnemonic enhancement to the sorcie/wizzy in your group. Those are the moments that make or break this game and create a stronger, more cooperative player base.

It's the random acts of kindness and willingness to teach good people how to be good players that are the underlaying foundations for THAC0. I try to spread a little of it around each time I come online to play. :)

I don't know about you guys but I lov giving loot away. I have always found a newb or Lowbie more than willing to take the equipment that I dont use anymore. To be honest I sorta take advantage of it too. I have found if you give stuff away it some how always comes back more powerful than when you gave it away. I get stuff from random people and there nice stuff and the guy or gal says or you don't remember me? You gave me a ton of stuff b4 and I thought since your wf you might want this +5 uber wf only item. Life is good when you are ignorant I swear by it.

A friend of mine gave me a collapsed portable hole. Are you playing DDO too much if something like that 'makes your day'?

I too am a fan of the Ninja Gifting, but I cannot be as generous as some of you. However when I come across an item that is sorely overpriced in the Auction House that a lower level character could use I will hunt him/her down open the trade window and disappear without a word. The other day I looted a Level 4 Health Belt (+2 CON) found an appropriate level Drow (cause the current toon was Drow too), caught her in the Lobster and *BAM* happy Drows.

When I first started in Ghallanda I had no idea what I was doing and very shy about grouping. I guy I was pugging with, I guess sensing my apprehension, spent the rest of the day showing me around. He took me through a bunch of quests and invited me in his guild even though it was Europeans only at the time.
I'll never forget that. Later I saw a Docent of Defiance and put in a bid and won it for less 10k plat (if you can believe that). I gave it to him as a thank you.
As far as material acts of kindness I see them constantly in the harbor. I try to give away anything thats "good" for level 4 or below.
I see hide-n-seeks, free this and that for whoever tells first. Ghallanda is the land of kindness and my favorite place.

Edit - i guess its Ok to name names in this thread
Aquarian of the Secret Society - thanks for your random act of kindness.

I am a level 19 cleric, she is 28pt and my first toon my daughter and I rolled. I dont have tons of plat because I would send all my junk to my bard. She is poor and never can buy enough heal scrolls till the other day I was given 38 heal scroll by someone, cant remember their name, while we were doing just a normal quest. I was like "wow, thanks". That to me means alot, I may not have plat, but with great players I can atleast heal more. Again, thank you to who ever gave those to me, I will use them wisely!

Not great stuff, but +1 and +2 Full plate and +1 Full Plate Mithril, +1 Scimitar of Pure Good, etc. I just achieved level 6 so it is not like I am running their uber stuff.

When I give away stuff, I type it in like this

FREE to NON Warforged fighters, clerics, favored Souls, paladins <link armor) must be on sunny side of Korthos or open a trade window with me by the dock.

I do not not seem to pull as many docents as I pull full plate.

I gave a muckbane to a new player after we tried Durk's four times and the third player pulled one. Which he kept as he did not yet have one. I was quiting for the night and gave the other player one of my muckbanes. I had two, but now I am down to one.

I just rolled up a DROW since I just reached 400 and I was turning the this character into a bank toon.

If it betters the server I try and help out as much as I can. Give stuff away, help a group of people, adopt a noob. Whatever it takes. I just wish more would do this type of stuff.

I have my semi regular Cleric appreciation days, to get rid of cure mod wands I don't need on my WF wiz. Cleric finds me in one of my fave spots gets a free wand.

Haven't bothered in a while though as last time I could hardly give them away.

This thread needs to be resurrected. ALA KAZAM! *poof*

This happened on Khyber last night. I was in the marketplace and I saw this come up in general chat:

(note: this isn't verbatim, just the jist of it)

"Make offer: (place list of about a dozen khopeshes here)"

I reply back asking: how much?

Answer: Whatever you have is fine.

Me: Really for all of them? I only have about 1100 plat...

Answer: Sure, I was just gonna vendor them anyways.

(trade window fills up, I put my 1100 or so plat in the window and click accept)

Answer: Wait, there's more.

(puts a few more khopeshes into the window and adds 10k plat)

Me: Wow! Seriously? Thanks for the bonus!

Answer: Random acts of kindness go a long way. Just remember to pay it forward.

The result was a random stranger (who I regretfully forget the name of :() giving me about 10 - 12 +1 through +3 khopeshes and 10k plat. Just being nice. Things like this make me glad that I gave up the 4 years I spent playing Guild Wars. In those years I saw maybe one or two acts of kindness and neither one came close to this one. I'd like to express my heartfelt thanks to this stranger. In return I will indeed "pay it forward" by giving away my old plain jane +3's and a couple of the other khopeshes I won't be using to a random stranger in game once I log on today.

I just can't seem to say it enough, Thank you once again kind stranger! :D
