View Full Version : Key Mapping Walkthrough?

This is a two part question.

1. I just reloaded the game onto my brand spanking new computer. Yea! Except I neglected to save my keymapping file, since I was unsure if it would transfer nicely from an XP system to a Vista system. Anyways, I have managed to get all my keys mapped correctly except for one. I use the num-enter key to interact with all my interactables, from talking to an NPC, to opening a door, to picking up copper from a broken barrel. Whatever I have highlighted in my little viewfinder, I should interact with. But, I can't seem to do that. Now, only when my mouse cursor is directly over the interactable on the screen, will my num-enter key actually interact. Previously, anytime my mouse cursor was anywhere other than a hotbar, I could interact with the object in my viewfinder. Does anyone know what keys I need to map in order to get it back to the way it was? There are a total of ten (10!! Who's idea was this?) keys that have the word interact in them.

2. I am guessing that I am not the first person who is confused by the multiple options for key mapping. Is there a walkthrough out there for using the key mapping feature? If not, can we create one?

EDIT: Well, I tried to talk to ingame support - who sent me to tech support. Tech support after trying to tell me in general how to map my keys, told me that it was an ingame issue and to contact in game support.... that was underwhelming. See my chat log below. Names have been changed to protect the innocent (or stupid. whichever the case may be).

TURBINE, IF YOU ARE LISTENING, I AM NOW ANNOYED.
EDIT: Thanks for the reply, Yeti. I am a bit less annoyed - I still feel like I got the run around ingame, but I think we can get my issue fixed out here at least...

Chat Guy: Thank you for contacting Turbine Support. Which game can I help you with today?
Me: Hi Chat Guy, I just reloaded the game onto a computer I just bought and my key mapping has disappeared
Me: I have reset most of it
Me: but for two year's I have used the num-enter key to interact with everything
Me: and now I can't seem to get it to work except when my mouse cursor is directly over it
Me: an interactable that is
Me: previously it would work anytime my mouse was on the screen, and not over a hotbar
Chat Guy: Hello Me, which game are you facing issue with?
Me: DDO
Me: sorry, I didn't see that question
Me: so, what I am trying to do is set my num-enter key to interact with everything from talking to an npc, to clicking on a door, to picking up some copper that just fell out of a barrel
Chat Guy: Before proceeding further, please let me know if you have registered under Turbine (North American) Account or a Codemasters (European) account?
Me: Turbine
Chat Guy: Let me know if your mouse right click is not working with the game.
Me: let me start it up, hold on, I never use my right mouse
Me: my right mouse button seems to make me punch
Me: seems to work fine
Me: Is there a walkthrough of what each of these key mapping options are?
Me: having a half dozen keys with the word "interact" in them is a bit confusing
Chat Guy: One moment please, while I look in to this for you. Thank you.
Chat Guy: Sorry for the wait. I'm still looking into the issue at this time.
Me: no worries
Chat Guy: "Me", please login to the game and press CTRL+O and go to key mapping tab.
Me: ok,
Me: there
Chat Guy: Now you can slect and customize your keys according to your convenience.
Chat Guy: *select.
Me: right, I just can't figure out what keys to use
Chat Guy: As replied earlier, you can select and customize your keys according to your convenience.
Me: I know I can do that
Me: the problem is that I had it a particular way I liked it
Me: and now I can't get it back to that
Me: so now I need to know what keys to select to get it back to the way I had it - as described
Me: I can give you more of a walkthrough of what I am trying to actually do with the key if you like
Chat Guy: Yes, you will need to select the keys back to the way you had.
Me: I don't know what the keys were the way I had them
Me: I am trying to describe to you how I want them, so you can tell me what keys I need to select
Me: there are 10 keys associated with "interact". I don't know which one to choose
Chat Guy: I am sorry, but you will need to select the keys yourself, if you need default settings I will be able to assist you.
Me: you cannot tell me what key setting in the key mapping menu controls what function?
Chat Guy: I would like to inform you that this is an In-game issue as key mapping information will be provided to you in a better way by the In-game support. Please contact the In-game support for this issue.
Me: In game support sent me to you
Me: I am thoroughly disappointed in this, both ingame and out
Chat Guy: I would like to inform you that for the mouse issue the In-game support have sent you to the technical support team. For the key mapping issue you may need to contact back to the In-game support.
Me: I didn't have a mouse issue, but I posted on the forums and will see if anyone has an answer
Me: thanks for your time

A lot of times the technical support guys might not know specific in game type questions as we do focus more on making sure the game works. However, after some discussion with our In Game team, we believe the binding you are looking for is labeled "Interact" in the "Interaction" section of the key mapping. The default setting would have it bound to "u".

Thank you for the reply, Yeti. I wasn't annoyed that the tech guy couldn't fix my problem, I was frustrated that I had spoken to the ingame guys and they had specifically sent me to tech support. I suppose the fellow could have meant in-game support on the forums, but he said tech support. So I feel like I was getting the run around...

Anyways, I am going to post this on the in-game forum but, after working on this for quite a while, I have mapped "accept choice", "interact", and "action interact" to my num-enter key. This combination almost does what I want it to do, but I have to have the cursor directly over a door, etc. if I want to interact with it using num-enter. Interestingly enough though, when I press the letter "u", which is the default for "interact" that gets shuffled to second place when I map num-enter, does exactly what I want it to do. But num-enter does not. Sooooo....there is obviously something fishy with num-enter, and now that I have done all this working, I seem to remember this being an issue one time before, and there being something non intuitive that I had to do to get num-enter to work. However, I don't know what the solution is, or why "u" works as expected, but num-enter does not. I have tried this with my num-lock on and off, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

So, if you come up with something, I would appreciate it.

I believe you would want to continue using the "U"key for Interact. I have noticed that all the num keys are dependent on the NumLock being turned off and sometimes this key is accidentally hit (and should not be mapped). I have mapped so that only in a pinch do I use the mouse. I have relegated the camera to the directional keys up, down, left, right and used num5 for Reset Camera Position. I still use T for Toggle Mouse Look that allows for camera movement with the mouse, etc. I would hesitate using the Interaction Keys except for Single Attack which I use on Y. Except for Single Attack these Interaction keys are dependent on 'reticule' which is an archaic word for bag or handbag and thus seems to require the mouse to hover over them in order to be activated, probably for use such as pick-up loot (which I haven't tried for I don't use mouse unless I have to). So I do recommend you not use numEnter on Action Interract. Why not try using your numEnter with the Selection set of actions, specifically Select Next Interactable, along with the Backspace key (which you can use in a pinch in case you hit NumLock in error or else remap or not use it). Sometimes you do have to hit it twice.

There are 7 banks of keys which you can program, excluding the mouse movement and the Keymap #2 keys. You cannot assign one key to more than one action in each specific group. For example you cannot assign the W key to Move Forward and also assign it to Walk Mode. If assigned to one of these it is automatically deleted from the other. You can however assign a key like num8 to Move Forward along with the W key. Both will work independent of the other. So here we have 2 choices for one action.

I have assigned the num keys to movement and reassigned the camera keys to the arrow keys and this way I have minimal mouse necessity and can work with the keyboard. I use the mouse for clicky. I can also swim better using the up arrow key to set my depth and use the num8 key to swim forward. My most important key is the num0 which I have assigned to the Selection bank of keys, specifically to Select Next Interactable along with Backspace (which I really don’t use). Doing all this I can use my right hand to handle all movement and interaction along with the U key mentioned before. I can still use the W,S,E,Q keys for movement if I wish. I use the num+ and num- for camera zoom.

I would avoid using any of the Interaction Keys except for Single Attack that I have assigned to Y. This just swings my Ranger weapon one time. I would avoid using the Panel Interaction keys for they don’t seem to work properly except for the possibility of the Cancel/Close Panel key assigned to Esc.

This is a rambling message that I am doing for memory. I am a newbie and have a level 2 ranger. If you would like some specific information on key assignment please let me know here and I may be able to help. I guess I could give all my completed mapping assignments but it would take a lot of space and time. Hope this helps you a bit.

After I wrote the above post I decided to check as to why the keystrokes became unstable at times, when suddenly they stopped working for a while, etc. and noticed that a few changes must be made for stability and to assure the mouse use wasn't interfered with. I think a walkthrough is necessary but I really don't have the time to do this right now. I am also surprised more people haven't replied to this thread. Maybe everyone is familiar with this? If I find time I will put down my new improved key mapping for my Ranger if there are any requests.

I had the same issue forever until I finally stumbled on the solution: Hit the "G" on your keypad. It stands for "Toggle Auto-Targeting." I had pressed "G" by mistake somewhere along the line and lost that easy touch that comes with auto-targeting. Try it and see if you get back on track.

Kindoki: Like you I encountered the exact same problem after moving all my DDO folders and files to a different location on my hard drive. After logging back on to the game, I found that all my options were reset to default. After getting everything set up back to the way I like it, I discovered that I had the same problem as you with my bound interact key. Also, like you, I remembered from when I first started playing DDO, there being something non-intuitive that needed to be done. I think I found the problem. This worked for me: Under the "Key Mapping" button, there are three smaller buttons lableled "Default", "FPS Style", and "Classic" [in gold lettering]. Select the one that most closely suits your style of play [I chose "Default"]. This button should now be highlighted in white lettering. Now, go back and re-map all your keys. My bound interact key now works like it used to. Also, as pitorrex mentioned, auto-targeting must be enabled. Something else that may, or may not affect this: Under "UI Settings", enable mouse soft targeting. I haven't verified this, as I always keep it checked.

NOTE- I realize this post is quite old, and that you probably have it fixed by now, but, hopefully, this will aid anyone else who has encounterd this problem.
