i've been really trying to figure out if any of the new lvl 8 spells are worth it and i honestly cant seem to find them to be of that much use at all, they're convenient at best but other than that until greater or sup potency 8 items are out i don't seem to use my lvl 8 spells at all. I mean Mass charm monster is great but they're nerfing it. And irresistible dance is good a way to make pvp not worth bothering with for any who don't have it but any mob you can cast it on is fingered just as easily.
What do you guys think?

Don't have a high lvl wiz or sorc, but I would imagine that Trap the Soul is the only really good new spell.
Considering you need it for adamantine ritual it's the only one that might actually be used the most.
Maybe also to build up a supply of trapped soul stones also for future use.

Irresistible dance is well irresistible...
And just like scorching ray, polar ray has no save either.

Irresistable dance I tested last night for the first time and it is a good spell. Just be careful getting near the cleaving orthon to land it as you need to be pretty **** close to him.

well i was thinking sunburst but i dont run necro a whole lot, mostly new content. with that said, I have grown fond of Polar Ray. I mean it has its limited use, but its handy at times. The pit feind by the way is not immune to it, although his DR is insane, as such, i average 260 a a shot on him with the occasional 570-600 damage hit, but it sure does burn mana. And if you got a high HD creatures that dont like cold the combo of CC and PR are nice. Just need a superior glacian VIII item now.. :( anyone seen one yet?
Im a sorc, so i wont bother trading out PRl until trap the soul becomes more useful. As it is now, TTS is for lower level intrigue and gem commodities exchange.

I also noticed that Polar Ray hits the Pit Fiend during the Shroud runs. It is still not a bad thing to occasionally help out the melee types with 300-700 HP worth of damage, especially from a distance. No SR to the spell= mobs getting hit often :) Other than that, I don't see that many lvl 8 spells being worth it, especially as a Offensive minded DPS build Sorc. That being said, if Sup Pot VIII items drop down the road, Polar Ray will turn into one of the beloved 1-shot kill spells  Anyway, just MHO.

If i had the patience to get my sorc to 16 i would absolutely LOVE polar ray. Scorching ray just aint cutting it anymore and i dont get enhancements to buff disintegrate. But polar ray.... Oh i would love to throw one of those at Velah!

I know I've had a lot of fun with Sunburst. Its somewhat situational but it can be oh so much fun to mass-blind things (or insta-kill vampires, wraiths, specters, shadows, and umbrals).

Polar ray is significantly weaker than scorching ray at present time.
The OP is correct, all level 8 spells kinda suck. They are not AS bad if you're a wizard, who can swap them so they have some use at some very specific instances, but other than that.. as a sorcerer, pick one, and be ready to almost never use it.
The list:
- Polar ray: WEAKER than scorching ray! Until superior potency VIII, just curse it (if it's a boss) and use disintegration. Or heck, scorching ray. I ..suppose.. if your casting stat sucks.. and it's weak against cold.. and you somehow can't curse it and debuff it first ... and it somehow has an uber reflex AND fort save that a ball of cold/cone of cold/disintegrate isn't a better option...
- Horrid Wilting: Horrid Damage. Use ANYTHING else.
- sunburst: Not the best CC, but useful in certain limited situations. At least not a waste.
- Otto's No-Save Dance. With a good casting stat, a heightened dancing sphere (or dismissal...) works just as well for almost all things. Still, in a quest you may find 1 or 2 critters where this is better/easier. At least not a waste.
- Shout, Greater: ...I'm going to grab all aggro in exchange for 6 seconds of stun, which the melees OBVIOUSLY won't take advantage of, since it takes them about 6 seconds to even start killing stuff from a mass hold person... yah.. thanks. I don't think so. At least sunburst blinded them. Next!
- I always wanted a pet kitty. Just don't actually summon her in battle and you'll be fine :)
- Trap the Soul: If you have a 2nd caster (or a designated soul trapper in the guild..) this is not very useful. Else, well, yeah, you need it to craft stuff.
- Power Word Stun: 450 hps max. ... .... I wonder if this even works on elite rats. Probably not. Next!
- Symbol of Death: 150hps .. AND a save. I wonder if this even works for 2-3 elite KOBOLDS. Probably not. Next!
- Incendiary Cloud: This blinds YOUR team, does minimal damage when compared to a firewall, and is slow to cast. Stop messing around, cast a solid fog and a fire wall for a much greater effect.
So to summarize, the not almost worthless spells:
- Sunburst
- Trap the Soul
- Otto's
Eventually useful, possibly even nice:
- Polary Ray

Agree with the last poster, spells per level in DDO are generally unbalanced and uneven imo in selection and usefulness.Take a look at the cut-short 5th level spell list for example for arcane casters. 8th lvl spells in particular are a huge disappointment. Expanding the list of available spells and making ALL spells more useful might give a boost to the Wizard class as well. The fact that there are give or take 15 spells in DDO that are absolutely necessary and highly useful to the exclusion of most of the the other available arcane spells gives Sorceror builds yet another advantage over Wizards.

I think it really depends on which one you would find useful for yourself.. since i am an avid pvper- i personally enjoy powerword stun- long range, and decent hold time, compared to ottos where i have to stand next to them :P Besides, there are a ton of lower level spells which are more useful in quests..
