Corrupt .jpeg File Crashes EVERYTHING! Help Please!

I have a corrupted .jpeg (yes, one of the few .jpegs in there) file in my folder that I'm working on. Whenever I scroll over it when trying to open any file from that folder it crashes windows explorer or whatever program I happen to be running to work with those files.

I have identified which file it is by scrolling slowly through the folder, one file at a time. Yet the problem remains that I can't do anything about it, because to even look at it crashes whatever program I am using to do so. I have tried replacing the file by copying and pasting the original uncorrupt one from the folder containing all the original files, but even that crashes everything.

It's not a file that I ever planned on

I assume it is one of the chestitem files?

See if you can copy the whole folder out of the ddo directory.
Try and get to the file from the dos command prompt and delete it manually.
Try and rename the file.
Change the file name in the xml file to a new name for the default file.

Just a few ideas thrown at ya.

I'd just delete the whole directory, DDO seems to be smart enought to default to the original UI if there is a problem.

BTW do you know how your file got corrupted? I've never come across a jpeg that will blow-up Windows Explorer.

Lol, last time I tried deleting files from DOS I deleted the entire hard drive. I'm a complete newb when it comes to using DOS commands. Any hints on how to do that?

And yes, it is one of the chestitems files.."chestItem_item_reserveBG" to be exact.

From the reading I've done on it, the file can become corrupted when copied and pasted. It's rare, but happens. But I've eliminated that as a possibility because I have scrolled over that file many times in the past already and it hasn't crashed anything. So toanswer your question, I have no idea. The rest of the files in that folder are fine, just theone troublemaker.

Then copy everything that you have changed so far, except the broken file, into another directory and delete the original. Then you should be able to grab all of the original files that are missing form the original skin set.

Also not possible. To do that I would need to be able to select everything I have done so far. Since the corrupt file is early in the folder, earlier than almost all of the files I have worked on, I would have to scroll past it to get to the ones I want to copy. And scrolling past it (even too quick for it to even really appear on my screen) is all it takes to crash everything. I have also tried going into the folder with all the unaltered originals. Change the view for windows explorer from thumbnail view to detail view, that should solve your crash problem (unless you've already tried it). To change it, click on the View menu and then select Details.

No I didn't. I had it set to list, but tried details and icons as well...still crashed.

For some odd reason, when I set it to thumbnails (I just tried that after reading your question) it let me browse the guilty jpegs. I have now successfully replaced the troublesome files with the originals.

I just wanted to chime in here and say that I was having a similar problem. Explorer was just crashing over and over.

I think the culprit is the DDOlauncher (or some other background process) that is "accessing" those files.

Summary:

DO NOT do your modding work in the MyDocuments>...>ui/skins/ path.

Work on it elsewhere, and move it over ONLY after you are done.

I ended up deleting the whole folder out of that path. (Not a big loss, it was early in the process and I was just goofing around anyhow.)
