View Full Version : Vista and voice chat issues

I recently upgraded to Vista, and since then I am able to play DDO fine with one exception - I can neither hear nor send voice chat. I can see other players names go green when they are sending voice chat, but hear nothing. Further, when I try to do a mic test within DDO, nothing is registered. However, I know my mic is working because I can use it fine for speech recognition in Vista.
I've made sure my input and outputs are set correctly within DDO's audio options, and I have mic boost up to +30db through the Vista options. I did recently uninstall Gamespy Comrade, and my understanding is that DDO uses Gamespy voice chat software. Could that have borked my install? Any ideas? And is there a way I can find out if my DDO install has the files it needs to run voice chat on my hard drive? Thanks.

It sounds like you know as much as I do on setup. I just want to let you and others know that it can work in Vista in the case anyone would wonder if it worked at all under Vista. Sorry I can't be of more help but with my knowledge it seems you tried all the places I would have.

Im having the same problem- General chat is the only thing that works for me- when I enter a party it says that I failed to enter the chat- my mic test works fine....i can hear everything...the vista settings are correct....I had this problem when i switched over to vista and it was solved when i looked it up in support, now my settings are correct and i have the same issue again-funny right after an update- im gonna cancel my account- i cant communicate with other players and online support told me to chek the forums- vista sucks.
This is normally resolved in vista by opening your UserPreferences.ini file located in your DDO folder inside My Documents and changing the line "UserSpecifiedPort" to "UserSpecifiedPort=9000".

Just thought I'd mention that you need to shut the game down completely first, including anything running in the system tray. If you don't the setting will get set back to 0 each time you launch the game from the server list.

Just got a new computer with Vista, and now every time I log in I get the message: "The chat server is temporarily unavailable. Please try again shortly."
I've read the forums and, frankly, cannot find the "folder" that needs to be changed. I'm 62 and have minimum computer skills so would someone be kind enough to walk me through, step by exact step, how to do each step and how to find each "folder" (or whatever) that needs to be accessed. It's no fun being unable to communicate.
Thank you so very much for all replies.

1. Run Windows Explorer (this is *NOT* Internet Explorer). Do this one of these ways:
a. Find the icon for Windows Explorer on your desktop or quick-launch bar and open by double-clicking (desktop) or single-clicking (quick-launch).
b. Left-click the Start button and follow this menu chain - Start | Programs | Accessories. You will see the icon for Windows Explorer in the Accessories menu. Select it.
c. Right-click the Start button. A small menu will result. One of the choices (near the top) will be "Explore". Select "Explore".
2. Navigate to your "Documents" directory (note: this is *NOT* the "Documents and Settings" folder). To do this follow these hints:
- Look for the "Folder" tree-view. It will contain items like "Desktop", "Computer", "Network", "Recycle Bin" and so on.
- In this tree-view, look for your login name under "Desktop". Expand this if not already expanded. From here, expand "Documents" and then to "Dungeons and Dragons Online". Select this. The right-side view should show at least two files. One of these is the UserPreferences.ini file.
3. Open the UserPreferences.ini file by double-clicking on it. It should open with Notepad automatically (you can verify by looking at the title bar when it comes up after double-clicking).
4. There are many lines in the file. Look for the "UserSpecifiedPort" entry. It probably looks exactly like "UserSpecifiedPort=0".
5. Change the 0 value to 9000 as specified in this thread.
6. Close this Window. You will be prompted with a "Save changes" question/pop-up message. Select "Save".
7. Run the game and be happy. :)
Here is a view of my Windows Explorer opened to the DDO directory. Usually, it will open to the "Documents" directory when you run this application (for options "A" and "B" above). (And no...you do not see F.E.A.R. in my DVD drive :) ).

Ok I recently bought a new pc with 6 times the system RAM and double the video RAM. Unfortunately in order to be able to make full use of the installed 3gb of system RAM i need to run Vista. I installed the game, updated, and logged in only to find out that for several hours i had been talking to my group with no responce (feeling very alienated), only to find out my voice chat wasn't working. i went to the FAQ for the known issues and tried everything. Here is the problem i can hear voice chat and text chat just fine, i can send chat via text no problem. my mic works fine with windows, it works fine with EQ2, it works fine with Ventrillo, it works fine with mic test, and it works just fine with hands free chat; HOWEVER, while in mouse look mode i press my push to talk button and no green lighted name and party can not hear me. If i switch out of mouse look to cursor mode and press my talk button while the cursor is anywhere on the screen OTHER THAN the GUI same problem, but as soon as i place my cursor over the GUI anywhere on screen push to talk works just fine.
here is my userpreference.ini file

as you can see everything is set as it should be according to the fixes provided by Turbine. I am not the first person i know whom has this problem, another in my guild is experiencing the same thing. is this some sort of GUI problem or a Vista/DDO conflict/problem and either way how do i fix it?

In the userpreferences.ini in documents>ddo change the line allowfakefullscreen=true to false if it is not already.
Also in the system sound properties, under the advanced controls for the mic make sure "allow applications exclusive control......" is unchecked. This can sometimes cause issues.

I imagine my case is the exception, but ill explain my situation...
Built PC on Vista Home Premium 64. Everything was running fine, until one day i logged on and i couldnt hear any VOICE CHAT in party. I had music, sound effects, everything but voice chat. I troubleshot and troubleshot, and i forgot to check a pretty minor detail. I turned my headphones off, and I turned my speakers back on, and I had party chat. So if all these steps fail, maybe, just maybe, its your headset. :)
