I am currently level 5, and will have to respec my enhancements as I was originally trying for more combat oriented rogueliness. I would like to be able to deal with traps and such but also have decent fighting abilities. I am working to be pretty self sufficient but will prefer to group if possible. All of you experts with advice, please critique me to your heart's content. I have no gear loaded here because I am not certain what is needed. Any advice along these lines would be great as well.

Don't short-change your wisdom like that. You'll need it for spot, affects how well you heal and how much you heal yourself, and without a decent Wisdom casters will OWN you.

Well since he is already 5th level that stat issue has already left the barn.

By putting all your points into DEX you have seriously weakened some other aspects of the character. Having more STR/CON/and even WIS would have been useful.

You can reasonably assume a +2 tome for the main stat such as dex, and a +6 item by endgame times. Having a 37 Dex sounds real sexy, until you find that you are dropping from damage, getting encumbered easily, or held by spells.

20 Dex is Overkill On any rogue build....

I'd go 13/3 though... The Die hard feat is pretty cool on a Low HP Character..... Saved me a couple deaths already.

Hmm...are we saying that I should reroll at this point before I get too far in? As a newbie, it has taken me some time to get up to 5, but I imagine it would be worse if I wait until late in game.

Your call man. Do you want to have the "best" atribute point distribution you can have or do you just want to play and have fun even if maybe you have less Hit Points then you should or you fail on a raise scroll once in a blue moon?

This is what I did with my rogue. Not saying this is "THE BEST" but it is what I found worked best for me after 3 re-rolls

STR 11 +1 tome =12
DEX 18 +2 favor tome = 20
CON 13 +1 tome = 14
INT 15 +1 tome MUST BE AT LVL1 = 16
WIS 8
CHA 12 hopefully will pull a +2 or 3 tome for this

Now I know you're looking at this thinking uh I don't have any tomes I'm new.
By the time you are lvl 16 you will be able to get tomes for every stat.

What server are you on? I might be able to hook you up with the int tome that you will need at lvl 1 if you do re-roll.

EDIT: Also be aware that by taking 2 lvls of ranger you lose out on 1d6 of sneak attack at every lvl cap. This info caused 1 of my re-rolls. You might not care but it's something to be aware of.

EDIT again: If you do go 2 ranger you may as well go 3 ranger for the reasons that Impaqt stated. The sneek attack damage is increased at every odd lvl and 14 rogue gets you nothing.

I am on Argonessen server. I think I will go with the ranger 3...still undecided if I will reroll. It takes awhile to level up when you are new, especially with all of the vets playing up their level 14 characters now that the level cap is up.

Ok, just want to take this one step at a time, since I apparently did not even *start* out right ;) Here is the breakdown I am planning on starting with at first level.

This gets the most overall stats for my starting points, but does not gimp my dex too much. I would like to try to find +1 (or +3 hehe) tomes for my odd stats (except dex which needs a +2, right?). I intend to take 3 levels of ranger (talked me into diehard), and the other 13 rogue. I thought about fighter for a couple levels for feats, but ranger just gets so many more skill points. I will keep disable and spot and search and open lock and hide and sneak and UMD maxed, of course. Also, are there some lowbie quests that I could do that would be more likely to net me tomes? I appreciate the replies so far, and those forthcoming.

Not qualified to assist with your build, but as far as tomes go, your best bet to see +1 tomes is Tempest's Spine (any difficulty). You'll probably want to run it 3 times on normal, 1 hard 1 elite for XP anyway, and it has about 12 chests if i remember correctly. You'll also pull some as end rewards (most commonly on a caster with class-specific end rewards turned on).

With 10 con you will be wishing you had more HP. I would rather see CON higher and drop STR a bit.

In my opinion nimble fingers is a wasted feat. I think I have some goggles for DD Search and Spot in the bank that I can give u if u want em.
If you have the best +skill items at every lvl you won't fail on any lvl appropriate traps. Except cabal but you would need a whole different build to do that 1.

STR 13 +1 tome +6 item = 20
DEX 17 +2 favor tome +6 item = 25 +4 lvls = 29 +5 enhancements = 34
CON 13 +1 tome + 6 item = 20
INT 15 +1 tome =16 +6 item (situationaly) = 22
WIS 10 nothing (your will save sucks, get a SR19 robe and get over it)
CHA 10 +2 tome (hopefully) +6 item (situationaly) = 18
