View Full Version : Build request... think of it as a new account with drow unlocked

Heh, don't know if this has been answered before, but figured I'd just post the request and see what came about.
I don't have any lvl 14 characters. I have unlocked drow, but that 400 points of favor is on a gimped rogue I'm going to delete eventually. I haven't played in a year, just came back to try it all again.
What I'd like is this... the fastest, cheapest, most efficient character to get in plenty of Pick Up Groups, and that once he gets to 14, and is working on unlocked 32pt builds, can work nicely toward gathering funds to support other characters and builds.
I don't have a guild to lean on for support, nor do I have anyone on my friend's list.
I don't have any starting gold to speak of, nor any uber items banked and waiting.
Other than that, no real restrictions. I'm open to any class/race combinations.
Thanks.

I hope you get some great responses...Id be interested in looking at them myself. I am in the same boat....played before to Drow with a gimped character that I deleted and realized that my "fun" build was as ridiculous as all of the kind and supportive PUGs I ran in told me it was.
I am still no expert and cant graph anything out like these folks can....but I do think I can give you my perspective.
Dwarven Paladin
When you play a paladin, you get a few "noob" perks....good saves and the ability to carry a wand. You are also capable of good-to-great damage and high enough Armor Class to not be a burden on the clerics. You can put some Action Points into your Auras, and they will benefit your whole group.
That is a survivable toon who benefits the party by healing himself and others (good noob training for that eventual cleric or caster of your own). A toon that can get up in the action and take down some Ogres and Giants, or can sit back with a shield and wand whip his buddies on a cleric-less night (more and more of those anymore). You eventually get some healing feats for yourself or others and you will get Divine spells for buffs/healing/etc.
I am doing the whole "no inheiritance" and 28 point build...no tomes to eat...etc...thing myself and that kind of character has not only made me a more rounded player, it has actually had people recruiting me for the groups (something my other builds seldom got). This character is a GREAT toon to solo with if you want/need to and the first time you collect 5 stones to take back to the shrine after a party wipe, you will never forget the AC/Saves/Wands holy trinity.
Good luck with your character and look at Dworkin's WONDERFUL build guide on the Paladin class. I dont speak DnD and I cant do complex math without taking my shoes off, but I was able to get more than a few pointers from it.

EDIT-
IF you are hell bent to use that Drow that burned a hole in your pocket this whole time, I would suggest a Bard. I REALLY enjoy my Bard alot. He isnt NEARLY as self sufficient as my Paladin, but he is a very useful toon and the Drow race is great for the Bard class. Still get access to wands and spells, but your Bard songs are great. You start out with one that buffs your whole party (in range) and one that can fascinate (hypnotize/immobilize) enemies.
You can make the toon DEX based and dual wield short swords/rapiers to a decent degree (better than I would have thought).
The Cons to the argument would be that anyone can be a Bard or a Cleric...but being a GOOD Bard or Cleric is tough for almost anyone, and sure is hard when you are new (STRICTLY my experience). You are never going to be the uber healer like a Cleric, the uber combat caster like a Wiz/Sorc, or put out the damage of a Barb/Fighter/Pally (without knowing how to build it maybe...doing math for a few hours). For that reason, a PUG looking to fill that "needed" slot is probably going to pass your lute strumming butt over for an expert in the field they need.

everyone loves clerics. I think Impact has a decent one or two. He also has a Character Build INdex linked in his Signature so you may want to check there. The current heavy weight champion is Sorceror for high end stuff but a cleric is always welcome in any group

Human Cleric .. even with 28 points, its a solid platform for getting into groups fast - both for leveling and favor. Plus, once you get him a few levels, the money starts pouring in (just don't blow it all on wands and scrolls and you'll be fine).
Human Cleric 14
Alignment Neutral Good (can use both orders wrath and chaos hammer spells)
Str 11
Dex 9
Con 13
Int 8
Wis 17
Cha 14
(the odd numbers are to plan for eventual tome usage)
Feats:
1 - Mental Toughness
1H - Empowered healing
3 - Extend Spell
6 - Improved Mental Toughness
9 - Maximize
12 - Empower Spell (switch out Empowere Healing for Quicken now)
By end game, this can be a potent killing machine as well as keeping folks vertical while leveling.
Pass your skill points around -- Heal is over-rated, imho .. 10 or so ranks is sufficient.. and as far as concentration goes, you'll be picking up quicken, so when you do that, get rid of your concentration item and stop putting ranks into concentration - you don't need it anymore :)

Have fun with a cleric if that's your choice...Would tend to steer clear of it if you're new(ish) to the game though...Heal-Botting can get really expensive (if you let it...) and Battle-Cleric builds can be tricky to manage because you need points in so many stats to be effective. Personally I'd stick to a Fighter/Pally multi-class of one sort or another. Here's what I put together for my wife when she unlocked Drow.

It's a fairly straight foreward Dex based Two-Weapon fighter. Couple of notes...
This is not a trap monkey build...Rogue levels are for lvl 1 skill points, UMD and Eavasion only.
You won't have Weapons finness until Lvl 2...Shouldn't be a problem since lvl 1-2 goes pretty quick.
First pally level could easily be taken at lvl 3 to provide access to wands.
The extra points from Charisma can be pulled to bring Con up to a 14
Drow melee attack enhancements will kick up your to-hit and damage nicely.
Easily adapated to Sword and Board if you're worried about being hit to much.
Hope this helps and welcome back.

Next to new account, just unlocked drow. Hmm... Drow Sorc.
I have had my 32 pointers unlocked for a long time now and have built plenty of other characters of various classes, but I keep comming back to my 34 charisma Drow Sorc.

Dwarf Cleric. No CHA or DV's. Just spec him in being as efficient a healer and as durable as you can. Stay away from groups doing repititions of expensive quests. 17-18 wisdom and consider mental toughness and empower healing feats. dont worry about maximize/empower you will get hooked on your offensive spells and end up paying for healing with scrolls/wands. Your job is to stay alive and keep others alive, thats about it. Let the arcanes do the buffs when possible be a total tightass with your mana.
I would go with something like this:
13 Str
9 Dex
17 Con
9 Int
17 Wis
6 Cha
Great wis and hp, and you will be able to swing when buffed. Throw in 1 of a melee class if you want to swing really well or feel like healbot will bore you.
thats assuming the current equipment out there. +1 tomes are relatively cheap and +6 items will round you out... Mod 6 may change the way we build if we get +7 items in the mix.

I can vouche for the greatness of that Drow Pally build that Geonis posted. I have almost the exact same build (taken from Geonis) going right now and it is great. I dont seem to have quite the damage or the survivability that I have with my Dwarven Paladin, but the Drow has some great points and adding those to Pally saves can be great. I decided to stay with Rapiers instead of Kopesh as was recommended...I admit that probably has something to do with the damage aspect.

Just wanna say thanks for the thoughts, and the build to go with it.
All the work is much appreciated.
I shall start working him up right away, in hopes of rising to the top soon :)
See ya in marketplace.
