Hi,
As a trial member, Id like to make a character that later in the game, when people want to do something theyll say "Man, where are all the ??? today?" If we could just get one of them we could go."
I know the standard is tank or healer. But some games there is an OVERabundance of tanks, not enough healers or OVERabundance of healers, and not enough tanks.
Ideally, Id like to pick a support class that is very underused so as to get maximum playing time down the line. I dont care much about soloing, as I plan to join a guild and make lots of friends.
I have been reading the threads and see the Rogue is extremely popular, as is Bard~ so I shant be doing those two.
Which class is the least popular or which class has the fewest of and the most need?
Thank you DDO vets for your answer in advance!

Interesting conclusion on Rogues and Bards. In game I think you would find they are two of the least played classes. So if you really want to play one of them I suggest you do. Both can be very fun and effective.
To answer your question- Clerics and pure Arcanes (wiz and sorc) are always wanted in a group.

I'd suggest a cleric or caster if you want to be popular in groups.
Almost every group wants one cleric to heal, and a second is always useful (either to crowd control, cast damage spells, melee, or just join the healing).
And casters are just flat-out the most powerful class at the moment.
I'd suggest playing a Cleric until you have 400 favor, then when you've unlocked Drow, try a Drow caster.

Oreg -
You are right; clerics rarely have problems getting attention.
I think it is interesting though that when I asked people what their favorite classes were - Bard won out and Rogues were up there too.

After Mod 5 and now Mod 6, it also seems as though that the demand for rogues, and pure rogues in particular, will ramp up.

If you watch the Looking for More in the Grouping Window, you can conclude which classes tend to be in the most demand.
I can find a group for a Cleric within seconds often if I want to. It is the rare group that does not need one, unless it is being formed by a cleric or guild group.
After that, what people want and need changes as the quest level changes. At end game, you really really want some effective spell casters in the group. You do not NEED them, but having them makes the quest a LOT easier. Early on, you might actually want more powerful fighter types, since low level spell casting is not that effective at that point.
Bards can be very powerful, if the player and group knows how to use them. Bards can also be ineffective if the player is unable to take advantage of all that they can do.
Rogues have uses, and in some quests are quite useful, but can often be damage sinks that need a lot of healing if not played well and that takes some experience.
So where will you concern be? Since you can have multiple characters in the game, I suggest you try a few of the different types. It is often pretty safe playing a Fighter type early on to learn the game. Move to a Cleric type to experience spell casting a bit, then branch out.
Multiclassing can be tricky to pull off if you do not have a plan in mind, so I would hold off on that for a bit.

Trolling these boards helps distract me from the task of packing my stuff to move house in a few hours.

Agree with the others that you can't go wrong with a cleric if you want a character who can always bring something to a group (magnified by the fact that in DDO clerics can heal, melee, and cast offensive spells, though it takes an outstanding player to do all three at once). If you want something that's needed but might be underplayed at low levels, might consider a wizard. Arcane casters can be painful to play at low levels, so those who know what they're doing but want to play them tend to zoom through those levels as fast as possible, leaving the low level groups stuck (even some low level quests can be tough to finish with no arcane caster - cough Shan-to Kor - cough).

A cleric, paladin or fighter would make the best first character, I'd think. Once you get a little bit of experience you can better understand the question you're asking. It's not quite as black and white as choosing a class in another MMO where choosing that class gives you a very narrow and specific role.
You'll almost certainly get some experience in the game, figure out what you really want to play after a month or so, and reroll. We've pretty much all done it.
I would stay away from rogues or bards as first characters.

cleric or bard = always an invite
if you have time to learn to play them, a ranger or rouge.
