Ok, is there anyone else who misses the good ol days of MTV? I do. I miss Remote Comtrol, and actual videos. Why are they even still called MTV? All they show now is reality TV, unless your up a 2:00 am then you may see an occasional rap video. I WANT MY MTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhhhhh yes...

I remember the MTV party we had when it first came out (well parts of it anyway).

Video Killed the Radio Star was the first video shown.

AND I was totally enamored by Nina Blackwood, she looked like she could do lotsa nasty things.

Although deep in my heart, I always loved Martha Quinn.

You mentioned Remote Control, which was awesome (had the game too), but never forget Liquid TV!

First time I saw MTV was on the TV in the barracks dayroom my first day of AIT at Brooks AFB. Video that was playing was Men At Work.

Yeah. I miss it too. Even VH1 sux these days. Gotta get the upper tier of cable to get the music only channels to get vids any more. :(

Early morning VH-1 ins't half-bad (did I just say that out loud?!?!?). 80's featured stuff....and some in-studio interviews and stuff with some of the old artists....in a record store setup, if I recall...could be the dazed, pre-coffee thing, but I think that's right.

And yeah, ya gotta flip to MTV2, and the others to catch any real vids. I wanna go ebaying for some old MTV on DVD, if it exists....duped from someone's old beta-max tapes or something. I have a friend that has a ton of it on beta...ha! Need to get him to transfer some for me.

What about the Friday Night (?) concerts....was that on MTV or USA?....Night Flight?.....hehe.....ahhh the memories...

Sigh, I miss "the real MTV" too.

Bekki, the answer to your question was posted earlier in this thread. To add to it, the artist was The Buggles I believe.

You know of course that we have just very badly dated ourselves! :D

Oh well, you still win for knowing it was the Buggles.

And I think it was still one of the coolest Videos ever.

Oh, when I posted earlier that early morning VH-1 isn't half-bad (again, can't believe I'm putting this into print, with my name attached...hehe), I really meant "VH-1 Classic" (I think that's what it it). Not the normal VH-1 channel, but this "classic" one in the mornings had/has some good stuff like I had mentioned....interviews/vids/in-studio gigs/etc with the old-school folks....mostly 80's.

And yep, as mentioned the Buggles were first, and the second vid played that day was Pat Benetar's "You Better Run."

Here's a little list of some others in that first 24 hours or MTV:

"Brass in Pocket" -- Pretenders
"Heart of Glass" -- Blondie
"Hold on Loosely" -- 38 Special
"I Want to Be A Lifeguard" -- Blotto
"Kiss On My List" -- Hall and Oates
"Oliver's Army" -- Elvis Costello
"Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" -- Rod Stewart
"Take It On The Run" -- REO Speedwagon
"Too Late" -- Shoes
"You Better You Bet" -- The Who

VH-1 Classic did run those first 24 hours in some sort of tribute a year or so back....wish I had DVR'd that...bummer.

Personally everytime I think of my 1st MTV experiences, I can't help but recall Eddie Grant's "Electric Avenue"....now that is classic MTV....ha! I also recall Duran Duran's "Please, Please Tell Me Now" (with the bouncing ball)....and Human League's "Don't You Want Me"......nice. Worst thing is these ares till in my current playlist....ha! I'm a sucker for the synth-pop. There, I said it!

The other cool thing was the promos by the hot artists of the time.....those crazy "I want my MTV" ads were the best.

I was certainly the Martha Quinn fan of the minute and crush of the 80's, because I KNEW I was the perfect teen for her... I passed on Nina , just wasn't the down home type.

But yeah I'm a victim of the MTV Generation and wish we could actually have a Video channel and not the tripe they put on there now. heck you could do you homework back then and still listen to the TV...

So Does everyone have a VCR Tape of videos that you wait for hours just so you could record that 1 video that you wanted on the tape... I think I found about 3 or 4 in the garage last time I cleaned it out :D

I tune my radio or cable music channels to the 80's music as much as possible. Lost a girl to George Michael back then (he didn't actually date her but he was her dream man). If only she knew then what we know now. :D

heheheh...

BTW, anyone got Sirius?...listen to these guys (minus J.J. - sadly no longer with us) on the Big 80's channel? I'm an XM guy, and dig the "80's" and "Fred" channels there, but curious about the Sirius version. Seems cool that they are all on there...wonder how nostalgic is sounds...

BTW, as a substitute, there are some decent DVDs out there that have 15 or so vids each, that pull from the early days of MTV. There are no VJs, or anything like that (which is the real coolness factor of a DVD collection of old vids), but still...they can be cool on their own once in a while.

There are a 2 decent ones that I have called..."Pure '80s DVD - Totally New Wave" and "Pure '80s DVD - Headbangers Rule" (my God I am telling ya'll waaaaaay too much). At any rate they have the following vids on them:

Totally New Wave
1. Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star [3:30]
2. Devo - Whip It [2:47]
3. Blondie - Rapture [4:55]
4. Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf [3:40]
5. Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out [3:39]
6. Soft Cell - Tainted Love [2:52]
7. The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away [4:27]
8. The Fixx - One Thing Leads To Another [3:16]
9. Madness - Our House [3:23]
10. Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance [2:44]
11. Big Country - Cruel Summer [3:44]
12. Bananarama - Cruel Summer [3:36]
13. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax [4:08]
14. A-Ha - Take On Me [3:46]
15. ABC - When Somebody Sings [5:15]

Headbangers Rule
1. Rainbow - Street Of Dreams [5:57]
2. Dio - Holy Diver [4:21]
3. Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane [4:13]
4. Y&T - Summertime Girls [4:09]
5. Cinderella - Shake Me [4:20]
6. TNT - 10,000 Lovers (In One) [2:52]
7. Queensrÿche - I Don't Believe In Love [4:32]
8. Kingdom Come - Get It On [4:41]
9. Yngwie Malmsteem - Heaven Tonight [4:00]
10. Extreme - Mutha (Don't Wanna Go To School Today) [3:26]
11. Tora Tora - Walkin' Shoes [4:09]
12. Great White - Once Bitten, Twice Shy [4:34]
13. Bang Tango - Someone Like You [4:20]
14. L.A. Guns - Never Enough [4:19]
15. Faith No More - Epic [4:26]

Oh and there's a 3rd, but I do not have it....not enough on there for my liking....but whatever, here is the track list:

Video Idols
1. J. Geils Band - Centerfold [3:39]
2. Quarterflash - Harden My Heart [4:02]
3. Olivia Newton-John - Physical [3:44]
4. Asia - Heat of the Moment [3:10]
5. Night Ranger - Sister Christian [4:15]
6. Styx- Mr. Roboto [5:34]
7. Pat Benatar - Love Is A Battlefield [5:18]
8. Lionel Richie - Hello [5:30]
9. Donna Summer - She Works Hard For The Money [4:09]
10. Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It? [3:48]
11. Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World [4:47]
12. Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight [4:16]
13. Tiffany - I Think We're Alone Now [4:27]
14. Suzanne Vega - Luka [3:50]
15. Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy [3:37]

Of the 2 I have, the New Wave one is really a better collection of those early MTV days, IMO. The Metal DVD goes a bit too far off the "hits"...Don't get me wrong, I must confess I still have quite a bit of "Dio", "Iron Maiden", etc in my "back in tha day" collection of CD's, but some of these selections are a bit of a stretch, IMO.

Anyway, I'd still love to get some whole-day grabs of the early MTV days, with the VJs, the ads, everything....I'll keep looking on ebay, and such.

Side note, I do have some good commercials and TV show intros on DVD from the '80s (and the '70s too)...collections that I grabbed from ebay....saving those for the big '80s party I wanna throw.....freak some folks out if those were playing in repeat-play on the tube, eh?...ha!

"The Buggles" on the brain...today.

Ever think, "man what a goofy looking, nutty sounding, nerd-ish lead singer there....I bet he never did anything after that one-hit-wonder"...well ever think it?

WRONG.

If you don't know, that's "Trevor Horn"....ha!

Crazy, but alot of folks see that video and have no idea who that "nerd" is. Well if you still don't know, let's just say he's got a *tiny* bit of production credit as well as band membership in his past/current/future (just to name a few: Yes, Seal, Paul McCartney, Lisa Stansfield, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Art of Noise, Foreigner, Band-Aid, ABC, Rod Stewart, Simple Minds, Tina Turner, etc, etc, etc.....). He was the lead singer during his short stint in Yes....and his production techniques in general revolutionized music recording in so many ways, including sequencing before sequencers were *really* available, sampling (in a good way...hehe), effects, etc.....just some real cool stuff.

Guess he isn't just from some dorky looking one-hit-wonder nerd, eh?....hahahahah.

Anyway, sorry 'bout that tangent there...just was thinking how silly he looks in that vid and how successful he is, in spite of it.

BTW, don't even get me started down the "Hans Zimmer" or "Geoff Downes" path, both playing synths in the video....I dig that ****. Bigtime analog synth junkie here...Moogs, Rolands, Oberheims, Prophets, blah, blah, blah....so the stack of modular synths, patch chords and all, in the vid makes me hit pause everytime....cool stuff.

Heya, ran across some old MTV footage, circa 1983, online! Sa-weetness! It's about 3 hours long....hehe, broken into a couple different segments. Anyway saw it in one of Wil Wheaton's blog entries, in his music archives section.

Here's the link:
http://www.appelogen.be/2008/01/25/3-uur-mtv-uit-1983/

And here's his blog entry that showed me the coolness of 1983 MTV, again:
http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/wwdnbackup/2008/01/three-hours-of.html

BTW, his blog is very cool. I don't agree with all of his views, but then again, that's why they are *his* views, eh? At any rate, I dig his reflections on his youth writings...he has a great way of capturing the vibe of what it was like when "we" were young (growing up in the 70s and 80s, that is). If you haven't already, you might wanna check it out. He has many writings on D&D back in tha day, Star Wars figures (the first ones...hehe), and yes, once in a while he recalls the days as Wesley Crusher...hehe. Good stuff to take a trip down memory lane.

Ah well, check out the '83 MTV footage...fun!

edit: here's the links from just plain ol' video.google.com (if the previous links look a bit scary to ya...hehe):

I remember seeing some live concerts they used to run late at night. That was the first time I heard/saw Gun's n Roses. And they didn't even edit out the language. At the time MTV was also the only real place you could get concert info. I think Internet killed the MTV star.

Video may have killed the radio star but reality killed MTV. I loved the beginning shows like liquid Tv where you could see animation that other channels didnt have. But then they started with reality shows, the first real world was fun at first, but ugh they just couldnt stop there, now its like any idiot who can get a group of friends to pull stupid stunts or former rap stars or the latest I seen a skateboard mogul (they have moguls now) and his big black bodyguard has a show...

What every happened to the videos? I watched one day with my nephew just to see if it was still the same ****, and they showed a few videos some in clips others rap (which unfortunately not a big fan of) then more reality shows, car shows like pimp my plymouth, the skateboarder and bodyguard show, some show with spoiled 16 year olds and shows were people get to rag on each other (yo mama?) all in all MTV is now an avoided channel for me. But its okay I spend most of my tv time in spongebob land...

The joys of a toddler filled live :)
